There is an american chestnut near me. It sprouts & grows 20-30 feet and to 3" dia and then dies. Then it repeats.

What is a good moisture meter? They seem to cost $30 or $400. I don’t want a cheap meter but I would hate to have to spend $400. Thoughts?

Are you sawing and drying your own lumber? Perhaps buying it green? Then I would invest the $400 in a good meter. I use a Wagner but I've had good luck with several Lignomat models as well. I prefer surface gauges but have used the pin gauges as well. But the real point is unless you are drying your own lumber I really don't think a moisture meter adds much into your shop workflow.

@@RenaissanceWW thanks, I 'rescue' wood after storms or make boxes and such from material 'harvested' from people's firewood pile....
