Thanks so much for putting this video up - I’ve done exactly what you’ve said but used some craft spray adhesive (as I had it) and going to use track pins to secure the edges in. I’ve allowed extra either side with the idea that pavements or scenic material will mask the edges (as you describe in the last bit). Fantastic video and thanks - really helped a lot. Water colour pencils - what a great idea. Masking off and painting road markings is such a palaver, and they always end up looking too clean and neat at the end. Nice shot of the townscape looking along the bridge and it just shows what can be achieved with a little imagination. Another inspirational idea to take away. Thanks Gormo and stay well.

Working on my roads now, I had plant to use joint compound or smooth it, but this looks much easier. Luke Town, does a great illistration on a video of his weathering that looks nice. Many thx sir........3 years ago but its never to late!! :)

Well good luck with your roads. I have just recently used this method again in the town on my branch line terminus. This time I covered the whole area, as it`s quite narrow, and then put the buildings and footpaths over the top of the non road areas. It seems like an easier way to do it because you don`t have to cut the road pieces to shape, however you do use a lot more paper. Cheers Gormo

@@tylerpaul650 No problem, The cut edges to be joined must be cut with a sharp blade and a straight edge (steel rule)......don`t use scissors. Colour the cut edges with a dark felt pen so that no white edges will show. When gluing the pieces down, slide one cut edge up to the other and butt them up as close as they will go. You will find that two edges cut with a blade and a straight edge will join very nicely, however you will still be aware of a join. Roads do have joins in them where new sections are laid down next to old ones. Don`t worry about it too much plus you can always disguise it with a car or a bus..???? Hope this helps Cheers Gormo

G`day Gary, Yes we`re all doing OK here in Oz, although we had to have Covid tests last week. I had a reaction to a flu shot which gave me symptoms and cause for concern, however our tests were negative....Phew !!!! Hi Gormo. Great explanation as usual. Wet and dry is great, but I have found that it marks easily, with any slight scrape showing as a light grey line. So I use your method but before laying, I paint it with dark grey acrylic. I guess you could also use Matt varnish.. For those not diy inclined there are some great pre-formed kits from German manufacturers like Noch..

Sealing with Dullcoat or matt varnish is the best approach to seal in the pencil. i always use it over watercolour or pastels.

I find if you roll the pencil in your fingers as you scribed the line it keeps a sharp point to give a constant thickness. A tip I was given back in my drafting days way before computer drawing.

Well done Gormo, some layouts I have seen are to perfect with nothing out of place. Your approach gives a more natural appearance which is far more realistic. Nothing in the real world is perfect. If you like I could get you a job with our local council. Cheers Greg

G`day Greg, It`s not very often that you see a perfect road in real life. There is usually some sign that the salt and pepper gangs have been through and patched a hole or a crack here and there. Of course there is weathering and oil spills etc....all sorts....so why bother with perfect roads on our railways.?.....rough `em up, bash`em around a little like the real thing. I`ll pass on the council job thanks mate.....I`ll stick to stuffing things up in my own backyard.....LOL Cheers Gormo

Nice one Gormo, it strikes me this method could be good for asphalt platform surfacing as well? You might need a strip of slabbing or similar along the outer edge to finish it off. The hazard line on modern British station platforms could be done with one of those pencils in the same way........ Alan

G`day Christof, I cut the Wet & Dry paper with a sharp blade and a straight edge. The cut edges are blacked with a marker and then once glued are butted up tight together. The straight edge helps enormously to get a nice joint. Cheers Gormo

I've used the wet n dry paper approach quite successfully many times. As to road markings, well... I've used everything from grout whitening pens, metal marking pens (Yellow lines) stencils and paint, Tippex (white correction fluid) etc etc. The watercolour pencils and pastel chalks always seem to give a better appearance (Not too solid) Another approach to the road surface I use (I model in O scale) Is Bitumen paint also called bitumen emulsion. It's used for roof repair and joining asphalt repairs. On uneven or curved sections etc it means I don't have join lines (even on a 4 lane Motorway/freeway/highway whatever you wanna call them lol) I paint the width of the road in a slightly thinned bitumen paint then sprinkle sieved shotblast grit over the paint. I use fine grit silicon carbide abrasive medium as it it the right colour and particle size. It adheres to the paint and then I run an old rubber screen printing roller over it after it's dried for a bit. Obviously I'm modelling in a larger scale, but i figured that since asphalt is made from bitumen & stones I'd give it a go. It's basically real tarmac/asphalt in miniature! (But without the need of heat and a tiny road crew to lay it, lol! Another great video Gormo, keep em coming, Bill.

Gormo I’ve been using this technique for years, I’ve also noticed the issue of curling edges when using white glue. On the new layout I’ve tried using a can of spray glue - nasty stuff but it works great and no curling edges.

I've had the thought in the past of using wet/dry paper, but had not pursued it.......until now. You've sold me. :-) Have been enjoying your channel for several weeks now and still have more vids to watch. It's one of the best I've seen for budget minded folks. Another question.....how do you do grade crossings?

G`day Steve, Bring the wet & dry right up to and just below the top of the rail for the road approaches either side of the track. You may have to pack some card under the wet & dry to bring it up to near track level. The section of road in between the rails is again wet & dry stuck to card to bring it up just under rail height. This piece has to be cut to allow enough clearance for the train wheels. Cheers Gormo

I heard you mention Bunnings. Here in the UK, Bunnings made a brief appearance from Aus. They lasted about 18 months, then they packed up and went back to Aus. They must have lost a fortune. No idea what the full story was. I think they bought an outfit called Homebase, then sold it back to them. The wheelings and dealings of big business eh. They weren't the cheapest, but that had some really good quality tools, as well as their budget range. My layout in N scale, and I may take up your method Gormo, although I do have some cobbles to model as well, if you have any ideas for cobbles...? Cheers.
