On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we learn how to become a better shooter from Joel Turner, owner of Iron Mind Hunting. Joel’s instruction is much different from any other shooting instruction I have ever received. This is a quote from Joel that touches on his philosophy. “People get stuck in the rut of thinking tactics and gadgets will solve their problems. What I am here to show you is it’s not the tools you have but the system you must have in place to be effective.” At first glance, it is easy to dismiss Joel’s ideas and training as “snake oil” or as the same thing you’ve heard from countless other efficient shooters. But, although seeming subtle, I found Joel’s ideas and teaching methods profoundly different from anything I have heard before. I cannot recommend Joel Turner’s shooter-training enough. Whether you are a seasoned shooter or new to the game, Joel is an effective teacher with an Iron Mind. You don’t want to miss this podcast.
At the end of this podcast Joel shares some deep thoughts on how to call-in big bulls using what he calls the “Bull Calling Cows” bugle. It’s a fascinating concept and Joel has the track record to back-up his theory. It’s interesting stuff. Something I’ll probably be trying out on my next elk hunting adventure. You can find everything you want to know about Joel Turner at www.ironmindhunting.com - Check him out. You won’t regret it.

Going through Marine Corps boot camp in the early 90's, getting saved, becoming a born again Christain. Going through two police acdamys in the late 90's. Then spending 7 yrs on the street, taught me to be calm in intense situations. Being calm while driving or talking on the radio. When in high stress situations, I breath very deep and slow- Helps!

The analytical mind is so fun to watch work. Myself along with most of the population will sit with a problem and never do anything about it! Thank God for analysis minded people that push people like myself to guided action. Now I have direction to get back into the game of trad shooting and hunting! Thanks Brian for your show !!!!

Thank you for posting this Brian. I'm still pretty new to archery and bow hunting. Even without going through the course, there was tons on useful information on this podcast. I am glad you seek people out than can help our community be better archers, and better hunters. I will be applying the things he is saying, and most likely will be checking out the courses. Thank you brother.

Watched the video, following the forthright testimonial from Jim Blackmon. A phrase Mr. Turner uses, "attentional flow through the use of words" pretty much boiled the entire discussion down for me. And the other, I'll paraphrase here, "You have to control the shot, don't let it control you." My wife is always telling me, "Maybe it's not the arrow - maybe it's you..." Apparently, she wasn't so far off target. Now if I only get time off work (and the Wife) for a few days and fly out from San Diego to get some on site hands on... It's on my wish list. Thank you.

Brian that is awesome to see!!! This gets into something I read and have seen first hand in combat. The book "On Killing" details the mindset behind what goes into taking lives. As evaluated from the revolutionary war through Vietnam. Only 10-15% of people engaged in combat were actively killing combatants!!!! Everyone else was just laying down fire or refused to shoot or dying because they could not respond. Everyone of those who were actively engaged in killing had vivid memories of every single shot. They were active in the shot process and not going through the motions. I am gonna get the course for my wife and daughters. Keep up the good work!!!!

Hi: I am somewhat of a archer who has achieved things: ie: I did take down a bear in 2008. I really took it for granted. It was with a compound and when I executed the shot, it really was no different than target practice. It felt so much not different (in terms of the shot) that I actually gave up on compound hunting. But, it seems that from what you are saying, what I did was really kind of an accomplishment: ie to be able to execute in real time just the way I executed in practice. I guess I had achieved more than that for which I gave myself credit. Right? Also, maybe if I had kept at it, I would have developed target panic? Is that what would have happened? [it sounds like that is what you say happens to a lot of people: good at beginning and get bad.] I will tell you: when I shot the bear, the release was a surprise: just like practice. Anyways, I am now in traditional bow and I think I just turned the corner: this AM, I let down 4 or 5 times due to knowing that my shot sequence was not progressing in a controlled fashion!!! This is all thanks to Shot IQ. So, we'll see. I think I will just keep getting better. I want to get good solid enough shot after shot that I can take animals with it. Thx.

ok, it works if you are using some kind of release so that you dont know when the shot breaks. but how to use this when shooting with the mediterranean release or three under? you barely can "surprise" yourself, because the letting the string go is a concious act, at least for me. so this is where the target panic can hit you. so how does this work then? sry for my bad english, im from austria :D

Arch3r I would think with three finger it's pretty much the same as a trigger release. You apply back tention and when you're following threw you slowly let up on your finger tention. If you're slowly letting your fingers go you shouldn't really know when the break will happen. I would think.

I do not like to hear people talking about shooting at animals with a bow at 80 yards even with a hand held machine call a compound bow. That aside, I would like to attend one of Joe'ls seminars because he makes total sense to me..

Thomas Burrows Yea you are right but with todays equipment, and if your a pretty good shooter, 80 yards is becoming more and more of a possibility where as years back it was one of those "your fucking crazy" type of things. Needless to say, i switched to traditional. There isnt much skill left in modern archery. I mean when you have garmin making rangefinding sights, which dont get me wrong that is awesome and i want one! But that proves my point that archery is becoming easier and easier. As the years go on more and more doors and possibilities are being presented. Its cool, but at the same time you have to stand back and ask yourself just how much of my accuracy actually lies within myself anymore anyway? Why does it seem like my equipment is beginning to do the work for me more and more as the years go on? Different strokes for different folks and its no doubt modern equipment puts down more deer year to year but at the end of the day did it feel good? or easy? Its all within you which way to go and i went backwards to the traditional community. Now, my shots, are without a doubt within me once again.

That was my take on it as well. He just wants your money for spitting some bullshit on something he believes works for everyone. There's no "one size fits all" or no "process" to becoming a great shooter. There's very distinct fundamentals to great shooting and that's all someone needs to practice to become great. It's not rocket science and you don't have to pay money to learn it. There's great instruction all over the internet if you're willing to find it.

Well, this comment betrays some SERIOUS ignorance. Although, I can’t blame you for mistaking this for bullshit-the U.S. is a clown show for sure. But Joel’s information is life changing for nearly everyone who takes his course. You should checkout the recent podcast he did with Joe Rogan-it’s legit.
