The History Podcast continues and this week we present Episode 2.
We take a detour and talk to Razib Khan, founder of the Brown Pundits blog and the BrownCast. Razib is a Geneticist by profession and publishes a sub-stack on what genetics tells us about our past. We look at the people who inhabited the Indian Sub-continent through the lens of genetics and ancient DNA and talk about what that tell us about the strands of origins, migrations, invasions, and
assimilation amongst the people of who have inhabited the sub-continent for millennia.
Apart from the usual suspects, the Mitannis, the ancient Greeks and graves in Kazakhstan make an appearance. So do Agent K and Agent J from the movie Men in Black. Joining Maneesh Taneja in this conversation are Gaurav Lele, Mukunda Raghvan and Shrikantha Krishnamachary.
We look forward to your comments and feedback.

I wonder how many yamnaya/sintashta actually came to the subcontinent. Today it might be 15% of the population, but how many came originally. Also David Reich says that one-third of India's population belong to castes that had a founder effect. What is the steppe percentage in those groups? (If it is substantial, most of the steppe percentage could just be because of the founder effect)

1. No one can tell how many Steppe-ancestry people came to South Asia. How many came is actually not relevant since a small number of migrants can also "mate" with a larger number of hosts - there is no one-is-to-one rule in mating, especially in older times. 2. South Asians today have Steppe genetic composition ranging from 0% (certain communities in South India) to 30% (Jats and North Indian Brahmins). People in North India generally have more Steppe genetic composition compared to people in the south. Upper caste people generally have more Steppe genetic composition compared to lower-caste people and tribal people.

Most Indians, South Asians actually (except those communities living in the Himalayas and Northeast), have three genetic sources - AASI + Ancient Iranian + Steppe. The percentage of each component varies depending generally on region and caste. Also, as Razib Khan says there is some East Asian component in some Bengali and other people.
