Milo is easily one of my favorite KZbinrs, and obviously this is my favorite podcast. I'm so glad they had this collaboration together, and I'm really enjoying this episode. It's very enlightening and also funny and entertaining. This is why Think Tanks are a thing, because beautiful minds coming together can make some amazing assessments and have the most interesting discussions. It's even better when they're charismatic and funny. Both the Chilluminati boys and Milo are just so fun to listen to.

I'd also like to say a lot of the issues with misinformation also have to do with the news. For example, a lot of the time I see "x study says this is bad for you" my first instinct to ask when I read that is "who paid for said study" I remember reading a few years ago, Coca-Cola deliberately didn't release the findings of studies THEY paid for that painted their soft drink in a negative light. There is a bias in who pays for what study, and guess what the news corporations NEVER say who paid for the study, they just report on its findings. Even though knowing where the study's money came from is important to knowing the context of the study.

for some reason this happens with eggs all the time. "eggs are good for you" "eggs are bad for you" "actually, having a couple eggs a day is fine" "if you even look at an egg you will get turbo cancer" it's insane.

@@miguelnewmexico8641 So the thing is, there's a ton of studies on common food items that are trash, because our current system incentivizes catchy titles that get media attention. Science is underfunded, and to gain funding, some people resort to publishing junk science with not very concrete evidence. These studies are almost never peer reviewed, and tend to make contradictory claims all the time. John Oliver did a segment on junk science a few years back, it's a very good watch if you're interested in how this works, he breaks it down really well. However I would caution people from throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Peer review is an AMAZING thing, if two different groups of scientists both verify the claims and come to the same conclusions, then you can trust what the papers say a lot easier, and the more people peer review a paper, the more you can trust them. Always check if science papers are peer reviewed. It's honestly sad that peer reviews are so underfunded and underappreciated, there's no prizes for 2nd place in science unfortunately, but it's really important to double, triple, quadruple check results with different teams, else we can't really be sure of the veracity of those claims. Also, don't take media claims at face value, ever. A lot of these papers tend to be distorted by the media, the scientist might say one thing about the benefits of one substance, and then the media just runs with it and makes it as sensational as possible, to the point where what the media says and what the scientist said are COMPLETELY different. If you can it's good to go into papers and read them for yourself to get what the scientists say. There is a lot of jargon that you have to know how to handle, Kyle Hill has some really good youtube videos on how to read scientific papers and understand them.

The one thing i would say about the inside light at night in a car, 20 years ago, widows were more.. squarer? if you put a light on you'd see so much of yourself that you can't truly see the finer details of headlights over your own refletion. Having kids now in a more modern car, I'd say that's dimished quite a bit.

I think the science faith idea has more validity with non-science people rather than scientists.
@davidbodor1762
@davidbodor1762 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, for people who have no idea how stuff works, they kind of have to take things at faith sometimes. They hear a scientist say something and they don't understand the underlying principles, but they accept that that's how it is, because they trust the scientists know what they're talking about. There needs to be a degree of trust in experts after all. However, actual scientists, at least within their fields, will always check and double check and measure things for themselves, rather than just take what someone said at face value. That's not to say there aren't issues with the way our systems work currently. Peer review is a something that quite frankly should be lauded and funded a lot more than it is, but there's no prize for 2nd place. People who make extraordinary claims and come up with things first, get all the glory. But it is important to be able to reproduce those results. There's also incentives for junk science in our current system, where releasing papers with not a lot of evidence with catchy titles to get media attention for a week can provide monetary gains and then those papers are abandoned, never reproduced and are most likely not correct in their assertions. There's a ton of these on common food items, like chocolate or coffee or whatever, there are hundreds of papers on them claiming all sorts of things, much of which is never actually verified. That said, I don't think most scientists would take those at face value and unfortunately those papers do damage the trust the public has in scientists.
