In response to the tuna over-fishing I saw on a documentary that both world wars greatly depleted the sardines in the Mediterranean..this is my new favorite channel great work!

White Shark was seen in south of France a few weeks ago, have to Google in French to get the news article. Also almost yearly 1 or 2 are caught in fishing nets in Tunisia

RE: The Balaeric Islands: I had heard that Spain managed to get a 'grip' on pollution and overfishing. As a result, 'gamefish' (tuna, billfish), small whales (pilot whales, dolphins/porpoises) are coming back to the region. And of course, more 'prey' brings more predators like the great white into the area.

I swan off Ibiza about 7 years ago and it was pristine. Definitely positive signs.

@@asmothcasefiles8368 That's the story with Majorca and Minorca too. I foresee more encounters in the future. Now if only the 'rest' of the countries around the Med can get their collective acts together.

It's one of the few times the EU could actually do something good for once; ban all shark fishing and strictly regulate commercial fishing overall. But it's definitely true that they're apparently starting to do something about it, because in the last decades of the 20th century fishing with a rod and reel for tuna and marlin was pretty much useless in the Western Mediterranean, because their numbers were so close to extinction, but now once again there are organised fishing charters where you can catch them with a rod on catch & release, and they certainly wouldn't offer that if there weren't any tuna to catch. I just really hope it will follow through and the prey species for Great Whites return to a healthy population. After all if that happens then the Great Whites will return as well, although not many there are still clearly some living in the Med so they're capable of slowely but steadily restoring the population. It would take about half a century for noticeable effects regarding Great White populations restoring because they don't produce many babies and apparently take quite a while to reach sexual maturity, but it's better than nothing. These magnificent and mighty creatures belong in the Mediterreanean after all, even though the Southern European tourism industry probably wouldn't like it, the sharks were there first anyhow.

Another great vid! Thanks for doing this one fella - really good info / footage / background / history etc as always and excellent descriptions of the various attacks!! 👍

Mate would love to see a vid covering the attacks at the Farallon Islands. Have always thought the Farallons must be the sketchiest place in the world to be attacked - dark water, overcast skies, middle of nowhere and massive jagged rocks sticking out of the ocean, looks like something from Jurassic Park. There’s an awesome doc on KZbin called ‘Near Miss - Great White shark surprises ’ about Ron Elliot, the diver that was bumped on the head by that huge white shark from behind and got it on GoPro!! Check it out 👍

@@markmailander3880 yeah I saw the news report on that!! There’s also another one he did on KZbin called ‘Devils Teeth’ which is pretty good. I’d love to know how the attack went down, do you know if he ever talked about what happened??

Mate that first link you put up was reported as a great white shark at the time but it was actually positively identified by experts as a mako shark.

Absolutley fascinating! I don’t go abroad, don’t like flying or the heat. Have been to Spain and Portugal ages ago. I have to admit, I never ever though that Great Whites were much of a possibility around the Med. It was a nice thought! However, after seeing all the research you have done, I must admit, I was quite surprised. I know millions of people go in these waters day in day out without incident, but there is always a chance. Maybe a small chance that Mr Whitey can appear. But a chance all the same. Thats enough to keep me out the water. You always hear how rare shark attacks are, but not rare enough for me. Your show was brilliant and very informative. As ever, keep it going. 👏👍🦈

You should search KZbin for an old Shark Week episode from 1997 called "Jaws of the Mediterranean", its cut into a playlist but its all there and its strictly about the history of Whites in the Med. There's footage of a 23 footer that was caught in 1987!
