The actor at the start of this ep doing the distressed voice about the boys that died was incredibly talented. It sounded like real grief. Good work on his part!!

Just hearing the Boy saying "Barlo." Right before the spark is made is so spine-chilling. Imagining being from Earl's POV. This legion of boys naming 6 towns you had to be transferred from because of roaring fires that killed so many, you think you're finally spared, that you repented enough, you felt enough guilt, but the sins and the ghosts of your past have finally caught up in one. single. word. The seventh fire, the name of your town, the mine you're in. Your new burial plot. Barlo. Then, light.

I'm too familiar with all these locations, and grew up hearing Dark as a Dungeon, and Blue Tattoo of the No 9 Coal, 16 Tons, and Harlan County, so I was already crying 5 minutes in. This means a lot.

i.... feel a little bad for myrtle? like her family was "drunk and violent" and she was fucked up enough to kill her own brother when she was 12 over a sucker... actually, thinking about it, when i first listened to this, i thought the boy was something like a spirit of vengeance, and i think he might be, but i think he might also be a sort of survivor's guilt. myrtle is implied to have not wanted to KILL her brother, exactly, and earl might be a jerk but neither of the two fires we really see (avalon and barlo) seem to have been directly his fault (with avalon the narrator explicitly said that people assumed it was his fault but never confirmed it, and we already know barlo was cletus's fault, if any human's), and he clearly doesn't feel good about it. i think it's even more interesting that the boy seems to mostly target individuals who were physically present during the deaths rather than the larger structures behind his tragedies. it's like... idk it feels like a good representation of the way kids view the world, and i think it's neat that a haint that's whole shtick is being boys who died too young while doing men's work talks like a man but acts like a child.

Vengeance is an inherently unfair and unproductive emotion. This spirit fulfils the object of the children's vengeance regardless of whether or not there's a more effective target. Children are immature and have difficulty looking at the bigger picture. They're going to blame the cruel boss, not the far away, faceless organization that orders the boss to be cruel. They're going to blame the sister that killed them, not their parents for failing to raise them properly.

where did you get the idea for the boy i would really like to read the folklore behind it
@OldGodsofAppalachia6 ай бұрын
It’s not folklore. It’s our original creation. Contrary to some folks misunderstanding, our show isn’t retelling of folklore. While we incorporate dine elements of it, our show is original fiction.

i knew the boy was created by you guys my whole family is from coal country my mamaw and daddy are from jewell valley virgina i grew up being told stories similar to this i just wanted to know were you got the idea behind the consepted for the boys

Hold on, The Boy killed 51 other men and ended up killing dozens of other boys who had nothing to do with Earl, and unleashed...those things, just to get at one guy? Seems counter-intuitive to me...But what do I know about the thought processes of a spirit of vengeance...
@thestrongestjoestar8342 Жыл бұрын
Well that's the point of vengeance. The boy is an entity formed from the agonized souls of dead children, it's main goal is to punish those who don't care for the young and thus doesn't care if they are harming others in the process. That's basically what revenge is about in media.
