In this episode, Bradley and Scott Beekman continue to explore the life and career of the aspiring American dictator, William Dudley Pelley. Better known as, “The Chief,” Pelley moves from spiritualism into politics, becomes embroiled in a Silver Legion government coup plot, and ultimately evolves into a New Age prophet.

A few weeks ago I watched a documentary called Nazitown USA. I had never heard of the rise of fascism in the early 1900s. It's chilling, to me, to see how Christian nationalism, MAGA, etc., have so much in common ideologically with that time. Funny how I never learned about any of this in school (as well as a huge chunk of black history). I'm 68 years old, so went to school 1960-1973 and was basically taught America is a perfect nation. I've learned otherwise since then.

Not really "much in common" so much as direct and easily traceable links. Facism in Italy had a very different look and feel than Facism in Germany at the time, even though it was the same political ideology. Facism in America was doomed to fail with the Swastika as its symbol. Throw the American flag up in place of it and the calculations change quickly.

Better to learn it now than never. I am like you--never learned a thing about this in school even though I've always enjoyed history. We did learn how terrible Nazism was but not about how many Americans were on board at the time. It always fascinates me how attached "Christians" are to their weapons. As a recovering "Christian" myself who has read the Bible many times I never saw any mention of Jesus carrying a weapon. I thought Christians were supposed to be wearing "the full armor of God," so why do they need guns? We are never going to see world peace until all religious fanaticism disappears, in EVERY religion.

I’ve been taken by the psychoanalyst Theodor Reik’s version of this remark. He wrote “It has been said that history repeats itself. This is perhaps not quite correct; it merely rhymes.”

Just had my 59th birthday. Nothing surprises me about our history anymore. I'm just angered at how much has been purposely kept from all of us over our lives.

Loving every minute of this gripping look into recent American history's ugly and heretofore forgotten lessons. I was especially struck by Pelley's accusation that his legal woes were directly caused by Roosevelt, whom he called "Jewsevelt." How can that echo of our current fascist in chief not resound like thunder in our ears today? Crooks of a feather. They handled Pelley. But can we handle his current incarnation? We'd better or face the ghastliest consequences.

You have got to do some heavy promotion on your podcast, man! You have done some really good research. For example, in your first one with Rachel Maddow I had never heard of Lawrence Dennis or the Silver Legion. That type of history is crucial to getting people to see the direct connection between our past and current times with regards to Facism hiding behind the name of Christian Nationalism. I had known about the German American Bund and that Facism was very much thing. I do appreciate the knowledge bombs man!
