Bmc 1.5 are meant to be started with a wide open throttle. It helps a lot

I also own a BMC 1500 in a narrowboat and I have read that it is good practice to keep the glow plugs on after the engine has cold started for 10 seconds or so as this stops un-ignited diesel from washing the lubrication off the cylinder walls. The reason is that although you have used the glow plugs to warm things up before starting, after the engine has started, it is still cold so the diesel coming in will be below optimum temperature.

I’ve got the same engine in my narrow boat. It’s a 1965 and it still runs lovely. I give 30 seconds of glow plugs and if it doesn’t start within five seconds I know there’s something wrong (like the stop switch still pulled out!!). To me it doesn’t sound like glow plugs definitely something else. Revs sound way too low. Hope you get it sorted out nothing as bad as an engine that won’t start 😊

Just done this to my 1.8 and with it being an early one it still had the 1.5 glow plugs. If you buy them from calcutt boats they come with the correct drill bit with them. Not sure if yours is the same but if I keep the glow plugs primed after it has started for 20 seconds it runs so much sweeter. Great watching as usual 👍

I did buy them glow plugs from Calcutt boats & yes they came with the drill bit which was handy, I really should have mentioned that bit🤣 I got some advice from a pal who told me with the BMC engines they need 10 seconds of priming then start on full throttle which seems to have done the trick there's hardly any smoke now. thanks for watching👍

The timing is out a bit on the diesel injection pump you need to turn the pump either way a couple of degrees

Thanks Dan it does look like the position of the pump is a little bit out from the original, I'm going to have a stab at fettling it soon 👍

@@barelyfloating if I remember rightly I had to turn mine clockwise about 2 degrees that's why it's making that metallic knocking sound the pump is out
