Dr. Mary Lucero has over 30 years of experience in scientific research and education in agriculture. Her research examines the microbial relationships between plants and soil health and proves that the regenerative approach offers a way forward for growers and consumers. As Co-founder and Systems Biologist at End-O-Fite Enterprises, she works with growers and biostimulant producers to optimize regenerative techniques to restore microbial ecosystems.
Mary and her husband, David, run Jal Farms, a family-owned fruit and beef operation in Eastern New Mexico. Her farm focuses on regenerative practices to restore soil health and growing nutrient-dense foods and even has an on-farm lab for her research.
In this conversation, John and Mary discuss:
The importance of creating an environment for native biology to thrive
How fungi are great shapeshifters
The Mycosome Hypothesis developed by Peter Atsatt
The importance and complexity of endophytes
Horizontal organism transfer
Indigenous concepts and principles
Mary’s experience with farm ownership

About John Kempf John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA). A top expert in biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who grow it.
Through intense study and the knowledge gleaned from many industry leaders, John is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition - a system solidly based on the sciences of plant physiology, mineral nutrition, and soil microbiology.
Support For This Show & Helping You Grow Since 2006, AEA has been on a mission to help growers become more resilient, efficient, and profitable with regenerative agriculture.
AEA works directly with growers to apply its unique line of liquid mineral crop nutrition products and biological inoculants. Informed by cutting-edge plant and soil data-gathering techniques, AEA’s science-based programs empower farm operations to meet the crop quality markers that matter the most.
AEA has created real and lasting change on millions of acres with its products and data-driven services by working hand-in-hand with growers to produce healthier soil, stronger crops, and higher profits.
Beyond working on the ground with growers, AEA leads in regenerative agriculture media and education, producing and distributing the popular and highly-regarded Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, inspiring webinars, and other educational content that serve as go-to resources for growers worldwide.

Great Interview. Thank you both. Eye opener statement for me: “the USDA will never support research that doesn’t benefit the agrochemical industry” That says it all. WOW!!!

“The cells that we call human” so much wisdom in how you phrased that and the conversation in general. Another fantastic and informative show, one I will have to watch back again due to the density of interesting information. Bravo John (and your guest was excellent too).

John, you are undermining the status quo by actually looking in to it. You are a good man. I thank you many times for vocalising what I see.myself over years of observation without the bias of programming I might have had at agricultural college. Your guests are often elders of the highest quality and I appreciate every one making the effort to open the door to our deeper understanding. Blessings to all

I really appreciate the detail into molecular biology that this discussion provided. Thank you both! I am especially interested in Dr. Lucero’s farming project at her home. How will she apply all her knowledge to improve her own soil and produce? I am definitely going to follow up on her work. Thank you John for finding such awesome guests!

Thanks John and aea for all you do. Absolutely love the increased pod cast brining on all these amazing people. I seek the knowledge to further my understanding of the earth beneath my feet. May our children know the importance of these pod cast and the information given. These always lead me to look up people and research I’ve never heard of….thanks 🙏🏻 god bless

Such great information and insight. The child in the background was nice as well. Reminded me of time spent with my granddaughters. On the spiritual side, at one point I heard the fight between good and evil. Those passed done long learned proven processes versus those supposedly highly intellectuals trying to convince us that the costly non natural way is the best. These days any time I hear corporate or government involvement. I just sigh and go the other way.

I always heard all soil everywhere has almost same amount of nutrients. It just not always plant usable nutrients. Add some carbons in and it gives life a place to happen. The carbons hold moisture and nutrients and has a paramagnetic force helping proteins come together. More of a fungal dominated compost person. I have been learning about bacteria in my worm bed, fen, swamps, marsh, bogs, and moor. Learned the areas that are nitrogen poor by what plants are there. Like pitcher plants and sundew. I used some cooked rice to culture mycorrhiza. I own property by the missile range east of Engle. Gonna try a simple greening project. Gonna slow the water down into pools and shade them. Pack the snow into ice in the ground. But oryx and sheep are hard on plants out there. Maybe try to grow mangrooves. Build aquifers not reservoirs. I have seen stained viruses and what not growing inside plants. I always hear to take cultures from tips of the plants to leave the viruses hopefully behind. Slim mold are really intelligent. I use lime white wash to get lichen to grow on my bee hives in central U.P. Heard lichen can produce oxalic acid and the bees do visit it. You never know what you will find the bacteria from swimmers itch could be the next skin cancer treatment.

What in the fights are fungi with remediate arsenic there is a problem anywhere that was Cole was used arsenic is at so railroad lines and stuff like that so even wear that contaminated soil is all that acreage is still labeled as contaminant so it's not a true Contender but I'm wondering what and a fight or fungi will remediate this?

Do you guys have any info out about nutritional specifics for elderberry pollination. I really think I have a market where I am and they grow well but other then a few spots on property that do well, I’m testing the soil there and using it in my compost tea because everything grows well there, I have terrible pollination. I have bees and I’ve been focusing on native pollinators for years so I don’t think it’s a pollinator issue. Also my daughter is going to Penn state’s agricultural program with her focus on soil science. She switched from environmental when we started learning about regen a couple years ago. She is looking becoming a regen consultant and is curious if you guys have any suggestions for students looking to become a part of the turn to regen. Thank you so much for all you do. It’s changed my family’s future learning how to transform our property in a healthy way.

If I remember correctly, I got my nickname, the tinfoil hat scholar, right here in the comment section of John Kempfs channel. I was leaving comments that were encouraging a view of symbiogenesis and the pleomorphic nature of microorganisms. Considering that the doctrine of John's, is essentially terrain theory. A few years ago, maybe my comments were off the wall, but now it seems to be exactly what we're talking about... Ah the test of time And by the way, i coined a new phrase this year, in part founded on what i learned in the course on redox, which you might enjoy: "voltage regulates pathogenicity"... In the search for disease suppressant soils, I feel that the element of redox, as so wonderfully demonstrated by Olivier in the course, is a foundation cornerstone in our understanding and achievement of the goal. Jerry Tennent says voltage regulates healing. Bob Becker said voltage regulates regeneration. Eileen Mckusik says that voltage regulates vitality... And do you see where I'm going with this idea? Just essentially adding in the element of pleomorphism. Free living nuclei= mycrozyma, protit, somatid, microspore. The research is in Love to you all and thank you for the work that you are doing to make our world more full of life

She's wrong. That research is being used by humans over time. Far more important is how AI is plagiarizing it without crediting authors and researchers.
