As an only child who mostly grew up alone with alarmingly easy access to the internet, I used to be obsessed with vine compilations on youtube. But the thing is english is not my language and I would watch these comps so many times untill I could understand the joke lol. Kinda helped ngl cause later on I took eng classes and my teacher would aske me 'how do you know these words??'

Omgg, I used to replay videos dozens of times and look for the words, helplessly typing them incorrectly, on Google because I couldn't understand them! Vine is like Blockbuster. The nostalgia is PARAMOUNT but the services that have replaced it (TikTok, movie streaming services, etc) surpass their predecessors in most ways except they simply weren't "first". We have strong attachments to "firsts" even when the first was the worst. Not saying vine was the worst out of musically or tiktok, but if that's your opinion, go off
@hotsexyangel
@hotsexyangel 2 жыл бұрын
But vine had less imbeciles IMO, and less people posted on there. Now everyone wants to be “TikTok famous” so they post too much and they come off as ingenuine and cringe. Idk there’s just too many ppl on TikTok, everything feels so over-saturated with content now, it’s almost overwhelming. Vine felt like it had its few stars that everyone adored, it was less crowded which I personally liked better. When a video went viral on vine, everyone knew about it. Now when a video goes “viral” only a select community of certain people know about it. Idk, vine felt more cozy.. that sounds kinda funny lmao but u get what I mean.
@tri-angel
@tri-angel 2 жыл бұрын
I really liked how simple vine was, I think that the limitations of it forced people to get really creative with how they told jokes or displayed their hobbies. TikTok keeps lengthening the time limit and has so many options for the videos which is great for a lot of people, but I don't think it's a 1:1 comparison, even though Vine and TikTok occupy the same niche of sharing short form content.

The lack of chronological order was to put in an interest-based algorithm, meaning that it shows you the posts you’re most likely to engage with via their algorithm. The whole point is to keep you on the app, and they found that chronological order was not able to deliver a higher user engagement time than what’s in place now. And, to Sarah’s point, it is all about advertising. Because they’re not going put ad, ad, ad-if they’re able to get the posts you’re most likely to enjoy near the top, then they’re able to disperse more ads without seeming over saturated.

I hate when people say ad reads are selling out. Remember a few years ago when youtubers were basically cancelled for doing a single sponsorship? Creators have done so much for ethical and smart consumerism like pushing for sponsorship disclosure and being honest with their usage and opinion of services. It’s a net positive in my opinion.

It’s cool to see how the view on sponsorships has changed from ‘you sold out’ to ‘yay! you got a sponsorship woo!’ Like it used to be so hated but now we get excited to see our fave creators get them because it means they’re doing well at their job and we are like you deserve this!

it’s so crazy to me that, to internet kids, these kinds of subjects are literal history that we all experienced and we had no idea how much of an influence the things we causally viewed all day every day would have on pop/internet culture now. i love how this podcast reopens internet memories

the reason why timelines aren't chronological is because you don't get the sense of "completion" or have seen everything. You can refresh and keep scrolling, and have more things added in from profiles you don't even follow etc.

One thing with vine is that to this day I can quote a vine and EVERYONE will know it,tiktok is so broad that ppl will know a trending sound but to have seen a specific video is far and few between and when it is it’s not quotable it’s just “the couch guy vid” so on and so forth

Vine's ability to be so powerfully referential managed to be the coolest thing when it first died/went away. I remember my first year teaching, I told my students (college freshmen) to tell me their favorite vine as an "ice breaker" and they were SO HAPPY. It really made them feel comfortable in my class and completely changed the vibe of the entire semester. It was such a way of connecting with people. I love TikTok, but I don't feel that with TikTok.

the few things from vine that pointed to its inevitable downfall was that A) people weren't even watching on vine anymore, they were watching compilations on youtube like "BEST of JULY 2014 #3" and shit so you wouldn't have to scroll through the same vine 20 times because one of those really popular viners like Anwar Jibawi or KingBach made one and all their also super popular friends revined it and B) the famous ones started posting their vines or longer versions/extended cuts of them on their instagrams before the app was even shutting down. I remember Melvin Gregg, Amanda Cerny, KingBach, Lele Pons, Marcus Johns etc making a vine that would say "full version on my Insta!" and there'd be an 18 second version of the same clip. Not monetizing it was probably the final blow but the KZbin compilations thing was the first gunshot
