Part of the problem is that R&S was never really meant for kids. There were so many jokes and scenarios based around 1950's culture. It's sort of like Tex Avery on acid. Every episode was borderline unairable just for the intense and disturbing style. I was a teenager when it first aired, and loved the earlier episodes, but after John K left, it lost it's way somewhat. Probably my favourite episode/s are the Space Madness one, and the one where they are stranded on the planet of left socks.

You likely a similar age to me. Growing up I had a cousin who was more like a brother and we adored a game called Final Fantasy 7, somehow my father got into playing it and was able to come up with strategies far more advanced than us so we would like to watch him try to beat the toughest bosses. It's a very warm memory to me. Fast forward 20 years and my cousin and Father both died tragically young in unexpected ways. I hear that a remake of FF7 is being made and I think how nice it'll be to revisit the experience. In reality the experience was the fun with family and upon playing the game it just made me really sad I couldn't experience it with them and I deleted it...

"Man's Best Friend" is a work of psychotic genius and is still the best Ren and Stimpy Episode. It's also something you can still appreciate, being as it's a window into the mindscape of a severely disturbed, pathological person trying to cope with their tortured, abusive past. Other R&S episodes are kind of contaminated by John K's life. Man's Best Friend either isn't, or is in a way that makes it really impactful.

I dig the background tunes you’ve got going for this vid. My kids got to watch this. We had 6 kids at the time of Ren and Stimpy. My oldest is 38 now and my youngest is 28. A lot of parents during that time were up in arms about the show but I was lucky enough myself to be raised by open minded parents with wonderful senses of humor…hence the reason I loved watching Ren and Stimpy with my own kids. My daughter just sent me a clip of Rens toothache and the nerve endings fairy because she remembered that it was my absolute favorite episode. Talk about stirring up great memories.

John K's issues with his dad were evident in the cartoon for years before he ever said so in interviews- I don't think there are too many concrete takeaways from Ren and Stimpy about what he cares about, other than that he was traumatized by and hates beefy authoritarians, 50's social values/decor, and canned foods. To me, it just seems like a huge segment of the world is just an ineluctable reminder of that time/relationship for him; the fact that they are pets (when pertinent to the episode plot, as in these) being a metaphor for being heavily controlled in childhood. Anyway, John K is a huge, huge creep but it is interesting that this banned episode seems to actually be one of the more cathartic/didactic episodes of the series ever- "don't abuse your kids/we had bad ideas about raising kids in the 50s and anyone who wants to go back to that is awful" is, I think anyone would agree, a much clearer message than 95% of Ren and Stimpy.

I think I remember reading a post that the voice actor that played George Liquor passed away. While the character is overall a cruel horrible "Holier than Thou" guy, I'm betting that the voice actor himself was a lovely, wonderful man that loved doing his job in the voice acting business.

Ren and Stimpy is a surreal classic. I like the video, except I had to keep the cursor on the volume control. The audio of the R&S clips was too low and the narrator voice was too high. I had to keep readjusting the volume, annoying. Suggestion: Learn to normalize or level-out the audio throughout the whole video, before you upload it. I still gave you a thumbs-up, because I like the content.

Uhh, Hermit Ren and Prehistoric Stimpy were never banned? They’re even on Paramount+, in addition to Powdered Toast Man vs. Waffle Woman, which I can only assume has now been unbanned
@DuskTillShawn3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I said in the video that PTM vs. WW was banned for 17 years and got unbanned. Also, most of these episodes were ran on Nickelodeon a few times before Nickelodeon pulled the plug on them and removed them from rotation. Also, here's a comprehensive list of episodes that were banned from airing on Nickelodeon/censored. Hermit Ren, Prehistoric Stimpy, and PTM vs. WW are on the list with reason for being banned cited. renandstimpy.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_banned/censored_episodes#:~:text=Hermit%20Ren%3A%20Banned%20by%20Nickelodeon,disturbing%20nature%20of%20the%20episode.&text=Ren's%20Retirement%3A%20Banned%20by%20Nickelodeon,to%20heavy%20references%20to%20communism.

It can be difficult to separate the artist from the art. Mr. K and his team combined innovative animation which on first glance seems childlike. A few seconds in the first episode and onward from there, this duo (Ren Hoek, asthmatic chihuahua, and Stimpson J. Cat, whose voice is a tribute to Larry Fine from The Three Stooges). The pair meet in a shelter and escape right before being euthanized. Somehow a lifelong loving bond is formed and the two spend the rest of the series trying to make their way in the world, through a series of nightmarish scenarios. Somewhere along the line they get their own home. We are not told how they managed this, and in fact their home disappears when a plot requires them to be down and out. There was so much sophistication and deep dark humor poured into this show. I am grateful that it survived as long as it did. I am tired of typing but you have an episode based on Syd Nathan from the Al Kooper tapes, and the fabulous sequence of Ren decimating George Liquor in an homage to Raging Bull. As a body of work, R&S was earth shaking when it first appeared. It should still be regarded as the fantastic achievement that it was. As an aside l am very weary of our current societal trend of negating artists on the basis of their personal behavior. **All artists are human, and generally flawed more than most**. Sadly we live in an age where the public feels entitled to know everything about an actor, musician, or whoever. There is no mystery here anymore, and for some reason it is also "necessary" now that we know things about artists in the past. WHY?

I guess Hermit Ren wasn't permanently banned from all syndication because I recall when I watched some Ren and stimpy on Hulu several years ago I actually remember the anger, fear, and ignorance part of that episode. I guess maybe it was just banned from TV but still available on Hulu back when Ren & Stimpy was on Hulu which I believe it isn't anymore I could be wrong. Ah yes. Double Header must be where Cat Dog came from. 😂 And hey I'm Sean as well. Well it's actually spelled differently. Very nicely done video especially from such a low subscriber count channel. I for one understand how it feels to actually put out a quality video and still have a very low subscriber count. Actually that's why I can I just gave up and just focus on making react videos and live streaming games because it's a lot easier to do and less time consuming to put that content out. But I have plans for an elaborate Sonic movie review that I hope to upload soon and Family Guy Theory video which should be a more original video that I have plans about as well.

i was gonna say that i feel like catdog was created to push RaS further aside since it was already too much for a children’s show on a children’s network . that show is corny imo
@SuperCosmicMutantSquid3 жыл бұрын
Ren and Stimpy was a weird show but it's probably due to that infamy that not only do people still remember it and like it (while still despising John for what he did because let's face it he's NUTS) and probably why Nick doesn't want to 'forget it' even now despite it's connection with its creator. RaS is one of those shows that has a controversial history but within that I don't think we should try to hide it either. I also remember as I got older being blown away by the fact that the same voice of Doug played Stimpy (and later Ren) so Billy West essentially WAS the voice of Nicktoons when they began, even though I'm aware he didn't like working with John either.
@PowerRangersFanAntiDinoFury Жыл бұрын
John and Billy must've had a really bad relationship, it's easy to see why Nickelodeon essentially almost destroyed Ren & Stimpy. I feel like all these banned episodes were left over from seasons 1 and 2 to be shown in later seasons to boost Ren & Stimpy's popularity more so that the show could have some momentum and keep it's uniqueness.

I grew up with the season boxsets, and I was surprised by how some of these that I really enjoyed growing up were banned, especially the Waffle Woman episode, that was one of my favorites when I was little

I grew up on these as they were released in real time. It was infinitely disturbing but I couldn't look away, much like the adult equivalent of seeing a car wreck with a dead body in the street...or any image of Lizzo. Blessing and a curse.

I was a broken child, and seriously connected with this show ! Despite the creator being in the trouble he's in, it actually was a positive influence in my childhood. Only certain people can see the big picture behind it, and I did! It's art, and I'm personally happy that cancel culture didn't get the chance to kill it before it was done. It's really funny that my mother loved it just as much as me!
@ar-sithf.austin37442 жыл бұрын
He isn't in any trouble. Or he'd be locked up. I've seen the documentaries about him. He didn't do anything. Michael Jacksons more deviant. He was just a narcissistic, controlling A-hole no one could work with. Think younger people who worked for him that loved him and he doted on could deal with that when adults couldn't? If he had actually done anything, his life would be over and he'd be in prison. Clearly there are nothing but sour grapes from this woke cancel culture like you said and the people who had no creative hand in any of it other than approving and producing it. That's all I see in the facts of his story.

Best cartoon ever and I was a young teen when it came out. Loved it and it's still great. Defend the man, don't buy into the modern b.s. that attempts to destroy anything that's outside the norm. Because those who have are the ones really guilty of the crimes they accuse others of 99 times out of 100 in these instances. In politics, and media especially. (Entertainment, well, that's a different story).

When you think about how PC and outrage addicted our society has become, it's hard to imagine that I used to watch this on Nickelodeon as a little kid. Actually, it's pretty insane that this was a show made for kids. However, it's still, without question, one of the greatest shows ever created.

LMAO I love this cartoon. It inspired so many cartoons that came after it well into the 2000s. All less warped, all less funny though. By the way, most of these seem to be post-John K episodes. I know that John K has (or had) a cult following that espouse his first season above all others, but all my faves are Bob Camp joints. Fake Dad is comedic genius. Yeah, it's John K AND Bob Camp. *MEAT!*
