As an OG Rocko fan since ‘93, it was a blast to see how many of these references were unearthed from my subconscious once you talked about them. The Brazilian Soccer Team reference genuinely took me by surprise, but then again, that’s why these types of videos exist now, don’t they? Fantastic work, man. Great breakdown of all the hidden jokes/references throughout the show! I've known about plenty of them but there's still a fair amount that I don't think I would've ever noticed. Speaking of the Engagement Hook, for me that comes off as a kind of pun, though idk if it was ever intentional; when making Dr. Hutchinson they were told to give her a good hook -- y'know something interesting, to ENGAGE the viewer per-se. So they gave her a literal hook.

One of Dr. Hutchinson's and Filbert's children resembles Heffer, after he was asked to help sit on their egg to keep it warm. It implies that he inherited Heefer's traits. I don't know if this is supposed imply anything adult, or if it's just supposed to be a funny joke.
@PintheDog2 жыл бұрын

The best part of the Engagement Hook episode is that in part two we find out Hutch's dad is a turtle, so Widow Hutchison is a hypocrite. Either that or she says turtles and cats don't mix because her husband left and she thought he died.

I'd like to point out how his dog's name (Spunky) could also be a euphemism :p
@robbiewalker28312 жыл бұрын
I thought Spunk meant courage and determination, which fits the dog’s description. Spunky wasn’t afraid to take any challenge, even if Rocko had to get him out of the danger.

Engagement Hook. Great job man, Rocko was and still is my favorite cartoon ever! I was devastated the day it was replaced with Spongebob, same time slot and everything if I remember correctly, still not a fan of that show . I got the Rocko DVD box set a couple years ago and realized how all of these subtle innuendos had such an impact on my childhood shaped me into the weirdo I am today! One of my favorite episodes was "Driving Mrs. Wolfe", even my mom would watch that one with me, not sure how she allowed me to watch that show at all!

Loved watching "Rocko's Modern Life" when I was a kid, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. However, I do have a few points I'd like to mention: 1. The Merry-go-round commentary was rather spot-on, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the washing machine in the background as one of the "seats." Incidentally, the pig you did mention might be yet another reference to the movie "Deliverance" 2. I think you missed the mark with the JFK reference. If you listen to the broadcast after Heifer changes the channel, it describes a very tense sporting moment, but Heifer doesn't react to that either. It shows more that he's watching the TV simply to watch the TV, and he doesn't really care about the content. He's just being a mindless consumer, which fits in much better with the overall tone of the ending, where all the mindlessly consuming vacuums have destroyed the town. 3. Lastly, what you said about Mr Bighead coming out as a clown, I view it more as the general hypocrisy that people have in accepting one group or multiple groups of people but excluding others based on such things as race, fetishes, or lifestyle choices.
@Lenape_Lady2 жыл бұрын
The clown episode is absolutely positively most definitely a reference to straight, successful men being down low. There really isn’t any other way to view it. Esp with Rocko saying “I love rainbows” at the end. It was specifically about hiding being gay. And the episode was trying to teach kids to accept everyone and not bully them/hate them.
@ashkitt77192 жыл бұрын
@@Lenape_Lady I mean, the writers absolutely said that that was their intention and if the episode came out now they would have made it more overt like they did with the character of Rachel Bighead coming out as trans in Static Cling. Which really adds a whole new element to Mr. Bighead saying "I have no son." Because he has a daughter.

51:08 lol Heffer literally dies from 'choking his chicken', and all the doctors were like 'Uhhh, no thanks.' I remember as a kid thinking that since gold is a softer metal the engagement hook Filburt got Dr. Hutchison would be impractical for daily use.

Did you know that Ed & Bev Bighead were parodies of Al & Peg Bundy from Married With Children? In the early 90s, rainbows weren't really associated with homosexuality. If anything they were associated with children. On the last one, I believe it was insinuated to be both inter-racial & inter-religious. Like a jewish turtle & a catholic cat.

Have you heard about the behind the scenes with the "Nipples of the future" They had to wait so long to see if it would be approved to do the scene. When they got to ok, I believe it was the creator that went on the intercom and said something like "Attention , Attention We have nipples. We have nipples."
