This song is so different from most of Nick's stuff, most of which is fantastic, but for some reason this song is stuck to me like glue since the first minute of the first time I heard it!

This whole album was heavily inspired by Grinderman and Nick's experience making Grinderman 1. You should listen, I think you would love it. Nick said recently we might get a Grinderman 3!
@iamkayem4 ай бұрын
I think it's because it hits closer to home, especially the older you get. Even though it's still heavily metaphorical as usual, his choice of words to describe past lovers & regrets is so so so poignant. I know the lyrics by heart, so compelling they are.
@iamkayem4 ай бұрын
@@tywa-wm2giinteresting, how so? It seems to describe a man reflecting on his life and past. I listened to (I *think*) Grinderman 1 and it seemed a lot more... Tom Waits-y grungy and less rooted in reality
@tywa-wm2gi3 ай бұрын
@iamkayem This song More News From Nowhere, is based in Homer's Odyssey and the myth of Odysseus (Ulysses) but with the historical figures and characters changed. The references are... modernized? It's not about Nick Cave's personal life. But the connective tissue is about a man being " a voyager" or wanderer like Ulysses. Grinderman is, as described by Nick "Improv" it has an improvisational quality to it. I had read an interview where he describes this album, Dig Lazarus, Dig!!! as being very influenced by Grinderman and their first album Grunderman 1. If most of Cave's music with The Seeds is a romantic, introspective man talking about the human condition, Grindrman is a finger-blasting, dick-swinging, misogynistic, pussy-chasing philanderer, drunk pervert. They also explored some really sad shit The Bad Seeds have never touched on like getting old, being in a nursing home/hospital waiting for visiting hours, your dick not getting hard, not getting pussy, the bible not comforting you, being transparent and people walking right through you, losing your beauty, the cruel passage of time, not lasting in bed, being the "Mickey Mouse" to a more evil and sinister force/character you associate with, Howling for your food or money, getting molested by other men, love not being reciprocated, "consensually" raping women, people laughing at you when you enter a room for literally no reason other than you got cucked by your girl cheating right in front of you and everyone you know and all you could do was offer to clothe her while she was angles on another man's knee blowing him, knowing you will never change, "Yeah, I know, I know it since the day that I was born. From the time I went to school. A million things are gonna happen to me in rooms that are much like this." etc. (Those are all songs from Grinderman 1 and 2, literally) You get it. But the interesting thing is that it was all improv, if you look at live shows they are always changing the song's lyrics and tempo and sections. It's always new and different. Some songs go for longer, others are cut short, in some the story/lyrics are changed or expanded on, and so on. Grinderman has a rough energy similar to The Birthday Party/The Boys Next Door. It's raw and full of nightmares, whilst being more sonically adventurous. How so? Hear Grinderman 1 and 2. If you love Nick Cave, The Bad Seeds and The Dirty Three you'll love Grinderman And read Homer while you're at it. "It takes me back to the ancient world, it takes me back to these invisible college of beings of apparent higher intent. It takes me to the geniuses and the muses. The first document in western civilization. Homer's epics, they begin by invoking an alien. They invoke a muse: ἄνδρα μοι ἔννεπε, μοῦσα, πολύτροπον, ὃς μάλα πολλὰ πλάγχθη. 'Tell me o muse about the men.' So Homer isn't inventing poetry, He's channeling poetry, epic poetry from an alien intelligence Maybe that intelligence has felt a little unrecognized in recent years." "Miro al cielo. Miro al cielo hasta que quedo ciego!"

The skinny guy at the bar with a newspaper is top author Will Self. Why is he in a Nick Cave video? Because he knows talent when he hears it. Nobody comes CLOSE to Nick Cave. "Her hair was like the wine dark sea on which sailors come home". If that ain't poetry, I'm Ringo.

Epitaph used to be an excellent label. Bad Religion, Rancid, etc. Cave is actually on the -Anti label, which is actually owned by Epitaph. -Anti is actually home to Greg Graffin, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave. I'm a huge Nick Cave fan, and glad this got on the Epitaph channel.

speaking as someone who both works at hot topic, and identifies nick cave and the bad seeds are my favorite band, all i can say is that people tend to shy away from nick cave the way they would with tom waits or leonard cohen. he has an unusual voice, which not everyone enjoys. their music is heavier in content and often in sound than other music, and most people just aren't used to music like this. regardless, at least appreciate his awesome mustache.

I watch this video Everyday about five times. Huge Nick Cave fan not a super fan he just inspires me awful lot with his education body language everything. Anyway I don't like men with facial hair. So I wouldn't watch any of the grinder Man videos. But I did watch Rak sessions.. I started with kitchenette of course which is hilarious yet sad because we all know who it's about. And then for some reason epic performance kept popping up on my screen and I trust my my phone and Nick caves influence on me. So I watched Mickey mouse on the goodbye man. And I became totally hooked on that video I still am you just know when Nick says all right that you're ready to rock. So now I can accept the mustache I can't stand facial hair but it's their choice my son's grow beards and it bothers me but they're my sons. So once again thank you Nick Cave Warren Ellis Dan and the other guitar player who I still haven't found out the name of but I'm going to do that right now because I feel I'm being disrespectful not knowing his name. God bless Texas and grinderman and Nick Cave in the bad seeds.

The people complaining about this not being Epitaph-like probably haven't heard anything Hot Topic hasn't sold them. Most of the bands on Epitaph would list Nick Cave as either a major influence or an example of excellent music. Sorry that this doesn't fit into your store bought and sold punk rock.

Okay, so if this is a summary of the Odyssey, I'm guessing Nick Cave is Odysseus and the hundred-foot-tall one-eyed guy is a Cyclops, which characters do Janet, Betty X, Betty Y, Miss Polly, the black girl, Elena, and Deanna represent?
@aderi314153 жыл бұрын
This response is coming really late but I can identify a few of them. Miss Polly is a siren. The black girl is Calypso. Betty Y is probably Polymele, daughter of Aeolus.Circe is the one who put something in everyone else's drink. I'd guess that Elena represents the Lotus Eaters. Deanna is is probably self-referential to their song from the 80s named "Deanna". Janet and Betty X? I dunno. Nymphs maybe?
