"It did occur to me one night, as I performed Stagger Lee in full priapic flight, that Stagger Lee does not shoot Billy Dilly with an actual gun at all, but that his being “filled full of lead. Bang! Bang! Bang!” was simply a metaphor for the force of Stag’s ejaculation, and Blixa’s terrifying and inhuman screeching at the end orgasmic in nature. Nick talked about Blixa’s contributions on guitar in an interview that I watched, he was not of course their lead or even rhythm guitarist, he played his guitar tracks over a mostly finished song in the studio, and they were just weird, unique riffs. They didn’t always go through The entire piece but just kind of peppered in here and there sometimes. Basically to add intrigue, an extra layer of sound. Plus he just also looked good on stage. 😊

OK, but it's about a real murderer who was a bit of a c*nt... so... I guess disaffected is ONE word for it.

It is. Mind you your friends will be afraid of you for the rest of their lives after you sing it, but it is.

"I'm forever near a stereo saying, 'What the fuck is this garbage? ' And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers" - Mr. Nick Cave

I'm not disagreeing about the RHCP... but this IS NOT the hill to die on. This is, at best, interesting, and, at worst, a bombastic self-indulgence. Either way, it isn't substantially better than the Peppers. It doesn't help that there is already a GREAT song called Stagger Lee (based on the same true event, I suppose). And the original isn't a self-indulgent abstraction of the idea of music like this is. I can believe this guy has done better, though, and I'm off to look for that now. Bottom line: If you've gotten to the point where you can only imagine making grotesque reflections ABOUT art, you should just find something else to do. This is the musical equivalent of someone who can only get aroused by watching oiled up midgets in walrus costumes fisting each other's assholes while singing the Canadian national anthem. That's NOT sex anymore.

@@steverye8872 I respect them but for some reason their music annoys me.
