I'm a medical massage therapist with 30 years experience. Unfortunately, I'm now developing carpal tunnel syndrome which has become very painful. Your videos have been helpful, especially the exercises to be avoided, despite the many videos that show stretching to be a key component in healing root causes. Your strengthening exercises make sense. I'm on it and will get back to you with results. Thanks so much!

Thank you so much, Doctor. I am an X-circus performer in great health but the sheer pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in my right hand, is ghastly. My arm is swollen and yes, my muscle degeneration in that arm, is clearly evident. I shall most certainly heed your advice. Many thanks, once again.

@@tuliaraaxel2381 Great question! I now realize I also have trigger finger. After 35 years of massaging wonderful clients, my one hand is seriously not happy. Symptoms do seems to decrease a bit when I love myself enough to give my body the time-offs I need. I have also found some help with trigger finger that utilizes many exercises to decrease the pain and stiffness. It's sad that those of us who "give" out of the love we have in our hearts have to deal with our own pain. However, my life lesson has been so much about self-care and not giving at the expense of my own health.

I'm new to your channel, as this was my first video. But before you even finished the video I stopped and made sure to subscribe. And if I'm completely honest I don't ever comment or subscribe unless it's about my true crime documentaries. But you are amazing at explaining exactly why, how, where. Just absolutely amazing!! Your video was probably my 15th video trying figure out what could possibly be going on with my hands that wake me more nights than not, with what I can only describe as one of the worst pains in both my hands. It's so painful it's literally paralyzing as I can only focus on getting it to stop by jumping up and rotating my arm in a complete circle and pacing around my bed and shaking my hand crying out in pain. This started around 10years ago and it only occurred 2-3 times a year and with it becoming more often. Actually it's at the point now where any time of deep cleaning or activities using my arms cause that horrible pain that wakes me causing me to repeat the same routine to try to get it to stop or ease up. So now it's become a almost a daily or should I say nightly nightmare!! I'm going to try the exercises you recommended as I am on my way to find your carpal tunnel syndrome exercises to strengthen those muscles! I apologize for the long story but the pain is excruciating and you are the first person to give me hope of not having to live like this for the rest of my life and that alone is priceless! Please keep up your amazing videos! You are truly talented and after extensive research & videos trying to find some hope of relief, your video was the only one I needed and understood completely in both the reason and solution! Thanks again! Xo jessi

I've done the conduction test and it didn't show it as severe enough to be considered for surgery. I have been taking Gabapentin for 2 to 3 months. I've been wearing a wrist splint and have tried TCM but none has allowed me to recover fully so far. I noticed every since my car accident when my collarbone slammed against my seat belt that my hand started to get numb and tingling. It’s gotten worse over the years. Coupled with the fact that I sleep on my stomach with my arms above my head. Sleep on my sides or my back isn’t comfortable for me. Today I woke up with the worst pain ever in my hands, that woke me up. That shaking off my hands didn’t help this time around.

Hello. I appreciate your video so very much. I am a Pharmacist and have been typing etc for over 45 years. I am now a very healthy 66-year-old. I love to exercise- mostly medium weights. I have been lifting for many years and absolutely love the iron(lol) I have stopped as of late due to my carpal tunnel for fear that I am irritating that area?? I went to my hand surgeon and he had me do an NCV and EMG test that you had mentioned I do in fact have moderate carpal tunnel in my left hand and mild in the right. I am a righty. It has definitely hindered my sleep patterns at night. I go to sleep at about 11 PM and am always woken up at around 2 AM and have a very difficult time falling back asleep due to the frozen tingling in those 3 fingers. He just gave me a cortisone shot yesterday but he warned me and said it is only a bandaid and that I would need surgery because in his words there is NO cure for carpal tunnel except for surgery? I really do not want to go for surgery since I still have a couple of years I need to work and be employed and support my family. I am going to go for physical therapy at a local practice called Peak Performace. So I guess what I am asking you is are the doctors right in saying that I need surgery soon? Or can I help this more by doing physical therapy? I have been doing all the hand stretches that you disagree with? So I am totally confused and frustrated. And on top of all this knowing that I stopped lifting weights which is really making me sad- can I do anything else like Push-ups on my fists that will make me feel good about myself or on something called Lebert bars which I own- can I do curls under that bar? I need to do something without making my condition worse. And if you could guide me onto other exercises you recommend please let me know where or which video to check on from you. WI am also concerned about why most weight lifters or people who exercise frequently don't have this condition more often and if so how do they treat it? Someone has to know? Please advise with your expertise. I am at the end of my rope here and really need to know that I can do the things I want to do without hurting myself more. (for example, I was doing parallel dips on the parallel bars- but I kept thinking that I had been crushing that area by resting the palms of my hands on the bars with each rep- and that cannot be good-RIGHT?/ Please help and thank you so much for listening. P.S. I had an MRI of my neck and I supposedly have many bulging discs and stenosis. But they said for may age and the activities I have done over the years this is fairly normal. The EMG and NVC test revealed that my problem does NOT stem from my neck(thank goodness)- and that I do not have what is called double crush syndrome?) They still say I have true carpal tunnel.- if that helps you any. Thank you again.

wow and wow again- I truly appreciate your reply and concern and well wishes. As mentioned earlier I just had a cortisone shot last week so for the time being I am doing well. I am seeing a physical therapist and he is putting me through all the same exercises. He started doing mild fascia release which I think might be a true game changer. I am also doing my own massages with a ball and my fingers. I am very diligent because I know the consequences if I am not. I also have started to use a stress ball and squeeze it in many different types of motions. I do fingertip squeezes for the lumbricals I think and I squeeze the ball with just my thumb and then I squeeze the ball without the thumb with just the other 4 fingers. I am trying to keep the base of my hand strong and never lose strength . I do have another question for you if you would know about this though- I had a cortisone shot as mentioned BUT I just read about something called Dextrose Prolotherapy? It is an injection of 5% Dextrose instead of cortisone. The article said it is safer and will also reduce pain and inflammation and you can have it done more often if needed. Have you heard of this? Please advise- and if it is available why didn't my hand surgeon recommend this instead of the cortisone shot? Lastly- I have started to lift mild weights again. I mainly do DB curls and DB chest presses just to keep myself from going crazy. I used to work out for hours by doing 6 sets of 6 different exercises for the biceps and doing supersets with 40 reps or so. NOW I am only doing 6 sets of 2 exercises with only 12-15 reps- because I do not want to have the weight resting in my hands for long periods of time when doing 40 reps if you know what I mean. I also started using something I have had for years but never used- but now I just started using something called the BodyBlade- have you heard of that and if so what do you think of that tool to exercise within my situation? Lastly- I have started to use my treadmill which I have not used much of at all over the years. But now I am finally since this condition appeared- and I do 45 minutes at a max speed of 4.6 and an incline of 5.5 overall and have done 13 sessions in 15 days so far. My blood pressure was always low- like 120 over 70 or so- I just tested my blood pressure today 3 separate times and my average is 118 over 60. So my treadmill and jumping jacks are having some good effects on me. Sorry for the long drawn-out speech- but you have been very kind to reply to me and I hope you reply and let me know what you think of ALL the things I am doing now and about that dextrose shot as well. I appreciate you so much. Thank you and stay strong and healthy.@@epmanualphysicaltherapy

I spend my work days in front of a computer processing data, & I'm convinced the painful nerve issues I'm experiencing are the result of literally hunching over my desk, which is 2 to 4 inches too low to be ergonomically correct for me, & has little to do with typing or using a mouse. Even when writing with pen & paper, I have to hunch because the desk is too low. Lowering the seat of my office chair to match the desk height then causes problems with my legs. I believe raising the height of the surface of my desk will make the difference. Until I can convince my bosses to do it, I will be doing exercises to strengthen my neck, back, chest, arms, & hands. My primary care nurse practitoner recommended physical therapy, but I don't think she's made the referral yet. Thank you for the education.

This is my 4th video on KZbin and I really appreciate your good works. am just not certain, my case started a week ago. I use the keyboard and mouse a lot but all of a sudden I started getting this wrist pain that wouldn’t go away and getting worse especially at night time. Sleeping it’s a nightmare. I can’t clench my fist fully and can’t unclench my fist fully anymore. The pains really bad. I feel slight feverish at night for some minutes. Ibuprofen doesn’t work. Now I know why it doesn’t work. I use ice on it so much I think I’m hurting myself the more cos am desperate due to the excruciating pains. Doc, I saw somewhere to rest the wrist to reduce the damages , you didn’t say how someone can manage the pains together with the exercise. I would be very happy to hear your advice on this. Thank you for your good work

Dr. Middaugh - Thank-you for the information regarding the hand grips as well as the neck shrugs and the arms extending over the neck. In the midst of a nasty flare-up I tried before going to bed last night and had noticeable relief. I had been pain free and numb free for 5 years following my surgery before it reared its ugly head once again. I'm 68 by the way. Thank-you my brother. Kevin Beck Evansville, IN I had stopped using hand grips following the surgery thinking I would be damaging with the repetitive motion. You cleared that up in my mind going forward. God Bless You.

I had an EMG, and was told I have severe CTS. I have a lot of numbness, but not much pain. Maybe the numbness killed the pain, not sure, however, the numbness includes the forearms. My doc recommended the surgery, but I don’t think it will help. Does the ligament also numb the forearms, too?

Hi Kelly, We are so sorry to hear that you’re dealing with severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We know how frustrating and confusing it can be, especially when you're dealing with numbness but not much pain. It’s not uncommon to feel hesitant about surgery and we really hope that people to surgery. Typically, carpal tunnel syndrome affects the hand and fingers, so numbness in the forearms may point to other factors that could be contributing to your symptoms. We wouldn't be able to say definitively what the situation is without a proper evaluation but generally speaking it could be the neck or traps that may be causing the numbness. We have carpal tunnel help playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mZrQwOpnnUUkP8Ori-F_by1 This playlist may be helpful too: “Neck Pain Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mZRNE4rwpxvE_tM1na_9kAm We hope you found this information helpful to you. My situation is different than most. It started as carpal tunnel symthoms, and now my fingers lock up at night so where I cant straighten them in the morning/at night..DR's are puzzled. Surgeon thinks maybe I have finger trigger too..I don't really want to do a steroid injection as I've heard from 2 chiropractors can cause bone loss and cartilage...Also read it can cause heart problems I already have a heart problem don't want to make it worse.. So I've been doing myofascial therapy using a stainless steel tool from the neck to my hand and that really helps with pain but I have to go in often every week or 2 depending on the severity of my pain. I've also started shockwave therapy which I guess can help with finger but too soon to say it helps..Idk what to do..I'm getting to the point I just want to cut my hand off it hurts so bad at times like now 😭 Especially now because I'm doing shockwave and not supposed to ice or use ibuprofen while doing the treatments as it won't be as effective..The Ibuprofen and ice really helped ugh. If it's trigger finger I just want surgery! Or cut it off. Surgeon said the trigger finger has nothing to do wirh carpal tunnel that they are both seperate but I think it does..At least the trigger finger makes the carpal tunnel worse or visa versa! I wish I could find someone that would just try the surgery for me as nothing is helping...The surgeon is trying to force me of it trying to force steroid shots! And I don't want them. I've tried physical therapy. Tried working oh posture for my back and neck..tried everything I stated above NOTHING is working. Asked DR if we could do a ultrasound on my hand to see if they could find the problem for sure there she said they wouldn't be able to see anything?!

Hi Yarnicornz, It's so awesome to hear about your passion for crocheting! We're sorry to hear that you think you might have carpal tunnel syndrome. We can only imagine how scary and frustrating it can be to feel symptoms and feel like it will affect your crocheting. Here are a few suggestions that might help you continue crocheting safely: 1. Wrist Brace or Compression Gloves: Wearing a wrist brace or compression gloves can provide support and help reduce strain on your wrists while crocheting. Look for ones specifically designed for carpal tunnel syndrome. 2. Ergonomic Crochet Hooks: Consider using ergonomic crochet hooks. They are designed to be easier on the hands and wrists and can help reduce the risk of further irritation. 3. Take Frequent Breaks: Make sure to take regular breaks to rest your hands and wrists. Stretching your fingers, hands, and wrists during these breaks can also be very beneficial. 4. Proper Posture and Setup: Pay attention to your posture while crocheting. Ensure that your work area is well-lit and that you are sitting comfortably with good back support. 5. Exercises and Stretches: Gentle hand and wrist exercises can help maintain flexibility and strength. We have a playlist you might find helpful for carpal tunnel syndrome. You can access it here: “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mZrQwOpnnUUkP8Ori-F_by1 If your symptoms persist or worsen, it's important to seek advice from a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs. We hope these tips help you continue doing what you love! We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!
