When I took calc 1, we didn't have to do these, but we did them in analysis class and they weren't too bad. Good explanation, my AP students aren't required to know delta epsilon definition, but they should. :P....

Do you teach them the proof? I never got taught it in my A level class (the UK level where students are exposed to actual calculus not precalculus). I got taught this in university in my second semester

Hello Dr , Thank you for your great video lessons. I have a question please : when we say for ( all positive epsilon) then we are not restricting epsilon to be small?? , so why is that?? specially that it is more logical if we restrict epsilon and delta to be very small so that it really serves the prove of a limit existence!! . Also in some excercises in the books they assume epsilon to be 0.1 , or even 10 ?? and ask to find the correspinding delta , so can epsilon be as great as 10 or this definition is only true for small epsilon and small delta ??. Thank you for your patience and reply

So in every calculation of a limit we should use the definition to really prove, but we dont do it, we simple put the value of x in the equation and take the result as the limit , when no indetermination happen of course. Is that right? for example: lim (x^4 - cos(x) + e^3x), as x -> 4, will be aprox 310 Ya I took a weird example, but the question is should we not take the result only from the formal definition? Because we aren't interest in the point x (4) in itself but in the values next to him. Do why we pick that value (310) instead of prove by definition?

Why is the "let epsilon>0 be given" line even necessary to explicitly state? If we are doing an epsilon delta proof of a limit existing, shouldn't let "epsilon>0 be given" be implied so we don't have to keep writing that line every time i do an epsilon delta proof?
@aneeshsrinivas90882 жыл бұрын
like why can't i just go into submitting my delta choice and continuing from there.
@drpeyam2 жыл бұрын
You have to say “let epsilon be given” otherwise it’s undefined
@mehtapuru6 жыл бұрын
The main question is, why do we even need a fancy definition like this one when you are able to do the limit problems intuitively with graphs, L-hospitals, taylor serieses and stuff?
@carlosvargas29076 жыл бұрын
Because intuition is not rigorous
@mehtapuru6 жыл бұрын
Carlos Vargas Isn't math completely based on intuition only?
@jonshonjohn47566 жыл бұрын
Because this is how the limit was invented, and it is very useful for solving analysis problems. Not to mention that it is how you prove l'Hopital. It is like saying "we already have cars, why do we need wheels? Maybe you meant to ask why we calculate limits with this definition, we usually don't, but the other rules we use are derived from it. There is a big difference between knowing how to drive and knowing how a car works, in math you NEED to know how stuff works because to make progress and not just winging it. High school wants to teach you how to take math tests, it does not need to teach you math (although sometimes the professors get in the way).

I think it's cool to have seen epsilon-delta at least once in a lifetime, but honestly it gets quite boring easily.
@hedgechasing6 жыл бұрын
PackSciences I think the best thing is to prove the limit properties like lim(a+b) = lim(a) + lim(b) using epsilon delta and then you don’t need to use it for anything else. You can just use those properties for any arbitrary limit.
