I struggle with the same issue. I’m vegetarian, but I feed my pets a raw meat diet. I do it because I firmly believe that cats and dogs do best on a meat based diet.

@@brown_gurl Ugh. I’m so sorry for the unnecessary suffering. Since posting my original comment, I’ve switched to a mostly vegan diet - and I still feed my cats and dogs a raw meat diet. I truly believe they are built for meat eating. I hope your family members come to realize that not all animals are built the same, and just as we wouldn’t feed hamburger to a Guinea pig, we shouldn’t feed lettuce to dogs - at least not on a regular basis, and definitely not as a staple.

I’m very happy to hear that you’re vegan and that you’re trying to do everything you can to ensure you’re taking care of her properly while also being true to your morals (trying to do it using sustainable resources etc.) you clearly care a lot for her and have a huge heart. Many vegan people I see frequently have a hard time using meat for their dogs because they think it’s hypocritical but I don’t see it that way at all. The risks are just too high (Nutrition is really complicated to do correctly by yourself) and while you can make the choice to be vegan an animal cannot. That’s the main thing about being vegan, it’s the morals. You feeding her meat doesn’t say anything about you except that you’re dedicated to your dog so much that you’re not guilting yourself into even chancing putting her health second. I hope this makes sense. I really enjoyed your videos and have always been a borzoi fan 😊

I don’t think you are hypocritical at all, wolves and dogs(order Carnivora) eat meat, but also vegetable matter and berries. Balanced diet. Simple as that. I saw an interview here in Norway of a vegan woman who gave her dog only plant food, when asked she said, because I want everyone to be vegan, and they live so much longer and a lot of other things I personally have not been able to verify on non independent web sites. That to me is selfish, I bet if her dog was given the choice it would choose meat over only vegetables, because it’s in their nature, they are hunting dogs for fuck sake. In my opinion maybe a rabbit would be a better option for her or a guinea pig. Anyways, lovely dog, and I really want a borzoi now!
@TeaReesa264 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Dogs are different animals and have different needs. Also, if a human vegan is having health issues, they can change their own diet immediately and tell their doctor exactly what feels wrong so they can work out a solution. Dogs can’t do that. So we have to go with what we know is best based on evidence.
@trugoingnowhere2 жыл бұрын
so every vegan is a hypocrite or just dumb? Why would you mention a balanced diet, if these idiоts do not eat meat or even eggs and cheese and so on? How is that balanced?

Hi Jacob, I absolutely love your videos. I have a 9yr.old borzoi girl self gold who looks and acts the same way as Esper. Coincidence? WOW!!! I feed my girl a completely raw diet and all I can say is that the results are pretty phenomenal. I have been with the borzoi breed for about 30 years now and I can honestly say that there will never be another breed quite for me like the borzoi. One caution though, if you do decide to feed a kibble, always check the teeth. For what ever reason, sighthounds in general have with periodontal health. I've found in my case that kibble can make things worse. Keep up the great videos. Looking forward to seeing more. Here's to healthy living and thriving. God Bless.

Enjoying your Esper videos. I think a balanced diet is ideal. So many dogs are getting diagnosed with diet related dilated cardiomyopathy. In addition to harmful foods there are harmful plants. I read some stories about dogs eating parts of a Sago Palm. They usually don’t survive. For that reason I don’t have any landscaping in my backyard, just grass, and now some holes dug by Aria. If I buy plants for pots on the patio, I google info to make sure they are not toxic.

What type of collar do you use for Esper? I know sight hounds have such slender necks and heads that a regular collar isn’t always good for them, especially if they end up pulling on their leash. So do you use a specific collar? I have heard some people use martingale collars for their sight hounds or buy certain brands. But I was curious as to what works best for Esper. Thanks!
@esperborzoi5 жыл бұрын
Audrey A we use a martingale collar and it works beautifully! It works perfectly with her slender head. There are many different martingale types, so it’s best to do some research, see what works best with your situation

Its not hypocritical. ❤ A dog is not a human. Humans have a choice and abundance of what they can eat. Dogs, Cat, Snakes were made with different digestions than us, being a responsible pet owner mean meeting those nutritional needs. Doing the best you can in our world is really all we can ask of anyone living a vegan life style.

I made a large stock pot of homemade dog food everyweek. Beef chicken rice spinach mixed vegetables I free feed all my dogs kibble 24 hours a day. They need alot of food to keep weight on. Don't exercise dogs before or after eating if possible. I never had a Borzoi bloat problem. Borzoi can help themselves to countertops so watch the marinating steaks and pizzas. Once one of my Borzoi ate 2 large pizzas without disturbing the boxes or any evidence of pizza on the floor. Idk how! Just left me with the empty boxes. Same Borzoi helped herself to groceries in truck bed and bye bye 2lb package of raw ground beef. Good luck catching them with that prize in their mouth.

The countertop comment is SO TRUE.

I have had the same thoughts on it. I am a vegetarian, very rarely eating any animal products at all, but my dog and cats get a meat based diet because some people might get away with giving their dog a plant based diet because of the long time domestication... but it definitely won't work with cats. And the health risks are wayy too high for me.

We fed Ora three times a day at that age, a couple handfuls (Maybe 1/2 cup) in the morning, then again in the afternoon, and a full cup, along with veggies and fruits at dinner. Ora is on the smaller side, but that was the perfect amount for her. At one point, we knew when we were feeding her too much because she pooped nearly once every 3 hours. lol.

I have a question. Does your borzoi go through periods of heavy shedding? I have had mine for 9 months. I got her in March, she was shedding, and then it got better. Now in our area it is beginning to get cold, we have some days in the 60’s, but it starts out in the 30’s. There is so much hair I could make another Borzoi. The hair balls are like tumbleweeds. I initially thought she was stressed because I was gone for several day, but that was a month ago.

OMG yes, I would say that's the most challenging thing about owning them. They are SHED MACHINES. haha.

Puppies will shed their baby hair a lot in their first year. The females shed a lot more than males. My 10 mo shed a lot at about 6mo age, now barely anything. I’ve had two growing up, same deal male barely sheds as a seasoned adult, female adult a bit more but not like the puppy shed.

What are the recipes and stuff that you cook for her? I’m getting a borzoi and I really wanna do the “real food” diet but don’t know where to start.
@esperborzoi3 жыл бұрын
Variety really is key ( I always google things to make sure they are safe as well). I really consider kibble a side dish , and a prepare other fun stuff for them as their main dish, chicken, fish, rarely some red meat (they don't seem to like it), plenty of fresh veggies - carrots, broccoli, kale, sweet potatoes, I do sprinkle in some healthy grains too sometimes, quinoa, brown rice, lentils. I typically boil it all together in a big pot, and serve it next to their kibble (Esper likes them together, Ora likes them separate). On occasion i'll do some meal toppers, like from stella and chewy's, or some fruit (Ora likes fruit, Esper is meh). High quality kibble is part of their diet, mainly since they balance it nutritionally and include vitamins and minerals that might be lacking if going full REAL food (they do make dog supplements, but this has been the best course I've seen).
