Bit late... but just learning printing by getting me a p700 beginning of year. And found the joy of this program when starting finally to test other paper than the epson prem luster used up to now. Got me a sample pack from Hahnemule and quickly learned that I could load emx files into the media installer that Hahnemulle provide in addition to the icc profiles. Still need to make a custom profile like you show here for two of the paper types (of six) in the pack since Hahnemule for some reason only provides icc profiles for those. Seems this emx file import is great and something paper makers should make use off :)

Thanks Wayne. I use this all the time. It is such a great addition for my P900. The other best thing about it is that then Epson LFP Accounting package can then be used to work out the media and ink costs of the prints from those 3rd party papers as you can select them to be monitored as well as the default Epson papers. I think the Accounting program is Windows only unfortunately.

Red River Paper posted several vids March 2023 about the Epson Media Installer. Wayne you have to select the profile in LR Color Management. The vids explain why this has to to done. Paper thickness settings are shown too.

Lightroom color management has nothing to do with this. Certainly if you use Lightroom manages colors, then the profile you select is used and any profile used with Media installer is irrelevant. But Lightroom and Epson are two different things. The question is when you set up a custom media type with the Media installer, and you assign a profile to that media type ... what does epson use that profile for? If you allow the printer to manage colors, is that being used? I’ve never answered the question because I never allow the printer to manage colors, but always use Lightroom and photoshop and the desired paper profile. But it would seem if they do attach a profile to the media type it could be Epson is actually doing its own version of color management and applying the values in the profiles, just like Adobe does in Lr and Ps (and even Apple allows you do do with their color sync settings). I guess I”m just not curious enough to figure it out, since even if it worked that way I would still use Adobe’s CMS and not allow the printer to manage colors.

Great video. I am pre watching this video while waiting for my p900 to be delivered. I don’t understand the effect of margins but I will definitely find out! Ps German is not that hard to learn 😅
@cwaynefox Жыл бұрын
Margins are used by the printing software to determine how close to the edge of a piece of paper can be printed when not printing a borderless print. This can usually be overridden with custom paper sizes in programs like Photoshop and Lightroom. 15mm or about .25” is typically the default. Mainly for sheet paper, since the printer has trouble printing until it has a good grip on the paper, so needs a small amount of paper to be past the printhead.

Very useful - thanks for this. If you do discover whether the profile actually gets used when printer controls colours will you post another video to this effect please.

Hi Wayne: I have an Epson R3880 printer and there doesn't appear to be an Epson Media Installer functionality available. Cheers, Keith

I think this is only for the P700 and P900 and newer printers at this time.

I suspected as much, seems in only works for the newer printers. thanks for confirming it.

Can the paper thickness be left at the dfault setting? Or will I be getting head strikes on a third party paper? Learning curves always make their presence known. I ask because one brand expresses paper in Mil. Epson has mm as the measurement. A converter app will help. And there are a few online. Thanks Wayne
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
If you are using the epson equivalent paper recommended by the paper manufacturer the thickness should be fine. As you mentioned Easy to convert mm to mils with online resources.

where can I download the epson media installer? can't find it anywhere
@@cwaynefox that link unfortunately no longer works. Anyway, it seems like the media installer isn't compatible with the P800? Seems kind of weird since it's on the software side of things and I don't really see the hardware connection/constraint.

The software may be asking for your password because of Mac Full Disk Access.
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
could be. lots of security checks in MacOS. No big deal, just have to type in the password.
