I've run a similar test using All three of Epson's glossy papers and Claria ink. After comparing them at my viewing station, I've decided the main difference is the thickness of the paper.

When using the Epson Print Layout app, when the "best" quality option is only available when choosing the Ultra Premium papers. I think Epson might be pulling a fast one to sell more expensive papers. I will test out the Premium Glossy using the Ultra Premium Glossy setting, with the Premium Glossy ICC profile.

I Have a ET2750 printer. It has little to do with the 8550 (it only has 4 colors) but it also makes good photo prints. Using Qimage when I select Ultra premium glossy paper , Qimage's artificial intelligence selects 1440 as the highest resolution. I see that in your case you have chosen 720 as resolution. If you select 1440 ppi you might get even better results.

What Ultra Glossy allows is that it reflects or absorbs ambient light. Not so much the printing, the printing are incredible and both of very good quality. Love your videos.

Are Epson's premium glossy visibly better than regular glossy?

I think there's 4 grades of glossy, Value, Standard, Premium, & Ultra. The first two are thin and the glossy coatings are low quality. The Premium is my go to for simple 4x6 (9 cents on sale) and everything else. The Ultra is a bit heavier and brighter, minimal difference IMO and the cost can be a lot more per print. Look for sales and you can get the Ultra at a fair price and the Premium for a bargain...

Probably the difference is due to the profile and not the paper since the paper is almost the same, you might see a difference if you print high DPI and use a microscope to see small details.

That ultra glossy looks like the glossy CibaChrome paper we used in the 80’s - plastic not paper! Doesn’t the black pigment sit ‘on top’?

So, I recent purchased the Epson ET-8550 following watching various KZbin videos, including several of yours Jose. Also purchased Qimage Ultimate. I owned a Canon S9000 two decades ago, and did a faIr amount of printing. I no longer had an older computer with drivers to operate the S9000 (also didn’t like the the pricey ink) so I gave it away. I found on Craigslist someone selling quality Epson papers for a little of nothing. I also discovered a cache of papers in my garage and so I’m set. One problem. Epson and Canon regularly change the names on paper. I need some way to identify and match the older papers to the newest profiles. Is there a website with that information? How do I install profiles to my 8550 so I can use the Canon papers? Please recommend videos to watch as well. So I took your advice Jose and ‘eyeball’ matched the Canon Photo Paper Pro PR-101 with a comparable Epson setting and printed with QU. Looks great!

Just starting to watch your videos, Jose. Thanks for putting this content out there. I just purchased the smaller ET-8500. Still 6 inks but can’t handle the wider paper. I’m a beginner at photo printing so I decided to start here Is there a metallic or slight metallic/shimmer paper you would recommend for this printer? And is there a profile for it? Thanks!

Not much. It is the paper which is not coated with the proper Photo Ink Jet coating. .
