This video from Sean also proves another point: The track already sounds pretty good without any EQ-move. That reveals the importance of the arrangement. If it were bad, the EQing would've been way more difficult. Chosing carefully the sounds and seeing that they complement each other is the key to a great mix afterwards. If you really have to EQ for hours in order to make your vocals cut through the chorus, you should rethink your arrangement.

Notice how the production already sounded somewhat mixed before Sean started applying eq. Some of you may ask how is this possible, well. Mixing starts with the sound choices/instruments. Before you consider mixing a track you have to pick sounds that work well with each other, you don"t want 3 sounds that all share the same frequency placement all playing at the same time. Secondly before you consider adding inserts and eqs to your track try doing a Fader Only Mix, you would be surprised that alot of mix issues are caused by elements which are too loud in relation to other elements. The way you can check for this is by having a spectrum analyser at the end of your output chain. All the frequencies should be more or less at the same height with perhaps the kick and bass 2 db louder if your making EDM/Rap music. One last thing, always check your gain levels after applying any eq or effects and be sure to gain match the difference afterwards, this will give you a true representation whether the mixing choice you are doing is adding value. If you dont gain match your are essentially fooling your ears as alot of eq boosts will add more volume to the track so be sure to gain match afterwards.

bro ,, you dont know how much you just helped me out!! my only other question is , my room isnt that treated "i have two comforters behind the wall where my computer desk is , in this case should i mix with headphones and then when i think its good , listen to it through speakers? i have senhheiser hd pro280 headphones and sony mdr 7506.
@RiversideProductionz4 жыл бұрын
@@2ndperspective418 Mixing with headphones can work for some people however bear in mind when you mix on headphones you won't get a good representation of the stereo field so perhaps when your checking for that play the audio from your speakers and make sure you and the speaker's form an equilateral triangle (This is known as the sweet spot) The is a good software by sonorworks called reference 4 which may help you with your room issues. Hope that helps?

Great tutorial! We have been EQ'ing each instrument on all our beats and it really helps to improve the sound but sometimes it can throw things off if we only listen in the studio, we try to listen on lots of different speakers (good, bad, headphones, car) then readjust.

Woow Great vidéo saves you a lot of time mixing instruments, i remember it used to take me hours just to EQ instruments, I love Sean’s helped me a lot to improve, So today I have templates and finish a song in less hour, guys also don’t forget less is more, in mixing when you involve so many stuffs takes your time and kill your mix, be careful, always use your ears, don’t fix what is already good. Thanks Sean i wish youtube could allow as to give 1000 like at once, than your videos would have my likes 🍾

It’s a spike because he hears where the vocal is gonna go. If it was pure instrumental, would have okay to be honest. But because a vocal is going to go there, for the intents of the song, there was a “spike “

Good video. I often find myself making massive abnormal EQ moves as almost a sound design tool. (i.e., Exaggerating an 808's low/mid frequencies adds texture and distortion, that generally wouldn't be heard with a 3-5db boost) Do you find yourself using the EQ for improvised sound design?
@SeanDivine4 жыл бұрын
absolutely. if the production is done right, the boosts and cuts in the mixing stage for me aren't too extreme... in the production stage, the EQ is much more drastic at times!

Hello friend, a question, do you think the spectrometer you are using for eq is more reliable than the clarity m stereo spectrometer? Because I use the spectrometer of cubase pro 10.5, and I have the Clarity m stereo, and one tells me one thing, and the other another, I don't know which one to trust for eq, what do you recommend?
