I called a vet to talk about some strange symptoms my horse was experiencing while my sister was caring for him for a while but it turns out, he had just throw a shoe and was walking weirdly and she didn't notice so I called the new vet we were using and told them but they wanted $250 for 'thinking' about it and 'preparing' prescriptions. And that's how I used 3 different vets in one month.

This is so true. My horse got a screw in her foot somehow but she kept on getting worse. The vets ended up charging us over 2000 dollars for not even getting the diagnosis. It turns out they weren't experienced the entire time and when we did get help the cost was alot (it was an abscess) The next time she got an abcess we only had to pay 50 dollars to our trustworthy farrier.

A bit late in commenting , but ... I often asked my farrier(s) for vet advice as they were very experienced in horse health - going fr. barn to barn for decades & quite often being present at & helping w/ vet exams , they were a wealth of knowledge ! It wasn't a money factor , tho' that was nice , but rather they were to the point on more practical / less stressful ( for both the horse & myself ) solutions . In return , I tried to be a " best client " by having my barns / boarders horses well mannered , the to-do list at hand , checks / cash ready , etc. Also , hot / cold beverages available & cookies / brownies to go ( i.e. bribery ! 😀 )

Lol. This is so accurate!😂 Before mobiles(!), my horse got a nasty cut. It was new year. Snow on the ground. Before I drove. I'd been waiting for hours hosing my horse& freezing cold. I ran to the closest phone box, to be told " Oh yeah, the vet's on his way". Got back to yard(exhausted from ploughing through the snow)to find a horse with his ears pinned back(not keen on strangers!)& a TINY pot of wound powder on the shelf! Oh, yes...& a big bill! Apparently,he got an Antibiotic jab! The first of many similar occasions throughout horsey life! My current vet charges per 5minutes! Honestly, when my jabs, teeth and check ups are happening, I babble like I'm on double speed to get the vet off the yard asap!😂

😂 so painful calling a vet sometimes. I had the worst luck finding a vet when I moved out of state, I was expecting one price then when I saw what she charged I had to pick my mouth up off the floor. I finally found a good vet that took great care of them and I felt like I was getting what I paid for. But I've definitely had 5 minute visits cost me almost $300 and it made me want to puke.

The call bill should be declared illegal.. The original idea was like "If I come and I don't find you, I'll charge you a fee for the call". That make perfectly sense! Now it's just a way to gain free money. I would perfectly understand when you call them at night or when they need to drive for hours just to come to our home, but a part these cases doesn't make much sense to me :D

For our private farm's horses plus four / six boarders , we scheduled semi-annual vet visits planned months in advance for routine vac's , etc. We also had another apptmt. we called " teeth & sheath " day. 😂 So while sedated , both were taken care of w/ less vet visits - trip charge , service fee , less horse stress , etc. Owners could plan ahead for costs & need not be present so they didn't miss work ; my handling their horses for vet / farrier at no charge was part of our board agreement - appreciative boarders = happy boarders w/ happy horses . 🥰

I havent had any really bad *vet* visits yet (routine care so far) but my farrier on the other hand has a mild rivalry with my prick of a horse. Not because he misbehaves. Hes a saint when it comes to shoeing, trimming all that stuff. No biting or kicking. Its what he does immediately AFTER my farrier declares him done. He will prop his hoof on the first immovable surface he finds, be it the lower fence rails on the paddock or somthing else. Look the farrier dead in the eye, and pull off his brand new shoes because he is a dick.
