In his first appearance in the show, third-year medical student John Carter (Noah Wyle) reports for the first day of his ER rotation. His supervising resident Dr Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle) gives him a tour of the ER and shows him how to suture and start an IV.

What i loved about this show that it was more about the medicine, less about the drama- even though they got dramatic in the later seasons, probably to compete with greys anatomy- there’s too many medical shows that focus on drama- and as an ER attending- i can tell you, there’s no personal drama; people get divorced, they date, they have marital drama, parent drama, etc but they don’t talk about it. The only drama is related to a patient not being taken cared of, or someone screwing up a diagnosis, or discharging a potential emergency. That’s the only good tea i care about actually. Don’t give a fk who dates/sleeps/fkus/breaks up/cries over, that sht is pointless to me

It was a TV show. Getting to know the characters' backgrounds and the interpersonal joys and humor and conflicts gives depth to the characters and makes the show addictive. If it was truly displaying only the reality of the daily workplace, it would be a documentary (and they are not nearly as popular).

The soap opera aspects of these shows was always the least interesting to me. Writers and producers forget that you can create drama within the job itself. Law & Order, at least in the early years, was always great for that. It focused on the policing and the legal side, only showing brief glimpses that the characters had personal lives. My mom was a nurse and said the same thing as you, that all the personal stuff just takes a back seat. Everyone is there to work, there isn't much time for anything else, let alone love triangles.

Carter is shown as being left there to sew, helpless without a clue. But apparently he DID sew OK some adequate stiches. Because they were talking about taking off the stiches. And the nurse didnt reacted, put on the bandage as usual. So, well done mr Carter, on your first ever surgery job!

Its such a beautiful last episode. I loves this show. My mom tough i was going to be a doctor. I was obsessed and 10 or 11 when I started watching. I love medicine but I ended up in film school. Sorry mami.

@Kray yes .. she was in the tour as a possible med student. A patient needed a iv and he might’ve done it but he showed her what she needed and talked her thru the process.. I don’t think she did one as a possible med student.. plus thru the series from morganstern to Greene, Greene to carter, then carter to Morris.. “you set the tone”..👍👍

I retired first from the top cancer center, where all works , later bored decided to accept a weekend shifts of 15 hrs each in a County Hospital and ER is exactly how it was, I was in the ER for females only. We trained new residents, many times I wonder how they finished elementary. How many times I reported Asian doctors for not bathing because patients covered their faces with sheets. From the first day we knew who would be a successful, dedicated doctor and who would be mediocre. On weekends we saw victims of violence ,girls giving birth that were not aware where pregnant. No other TV portrays how County ,teaching hospitals work. And a big applause to all the nurses that had to correct residents, teach them . We saw Faculty only for rape cases, when one of them would to the examen. The best was a Senior Resident ,a female that also had a law degree, she was superv with patients caring,beautiful, intelligent. Daughter of a well know handsome TV actor, but she goes with her married name and not once mentioned her father till he showed at ER to surprise her and we had a meltdown of patients and staff. Love the show ,and yes I retired again. Of course today like all older shows, it could not be made. Great show.

Grey's anatomy can not be compare with this show. Because er is so much better that. All charaters personalities are unique and distinctive and i can literally feel the early 90's vibe just watching this show.

Notice how fast Benton talks. There is no leeway if you are neurodivergent or whatever else. You learn to adapt to your teacher--not the other way around. If you can't cut it, you don't make it. That is how they weed out and keep our doctors top notch.

There isn't really a set color scheme for all hospitals. But on the show, the doctors wear white lab coats, or if they're wearing scrubs, it's usually green in the ER and blue in surgery. Notice how Benton is wearing green here when he's in the ER, but later in the episode when he performs surgery, he changes into blue. The nurses wear pink.

You can tell Michael Criterion is a brilliant man and knew what was in store for john given his name, the hero's journey. For having the name john carter, the same as the hero of the edgar rice burrow series of novels, the ones that inspired all adventure from star wars to the MCU what he would go on. For as we saw from the first scene here as the young scared boy would grow into a heroic, noble man. His journey was filled with victories and defeats both in the hospital and in his life. Yet he became someone he is proud of. That is the beauty of ER it how it shows its heroes as flawed people, never to perfect nor to vile but still going through the struggle of life and the job to make a difference, growing and always having their moment.
