He signed the chart which means he’s responsible. The fact that he didn’t get all the information before signing was his undoing. He was a jerk.

Also, as was pointed out, less experienced doctors aren't slaves meant to support the attending in everything and die for them. The more experienced attending is supposed to help the rookies learn.

@@hunterg24 Agreed. At this guys age (and subsequent experience as an Interventional Cardiologist, presumably), he is responsible to pay a little more attention, especially to an ER doc or resident, many of whom are less than competent in reading a 12-lead. (Please spare me the hurt feelings from this snarky comment. I have come in to the hospital in the middle of the night too often to shoot normal coronaries to back down.) Two other observations; I have encountered very few Interventional cardiologists who are so belligerent. I have also never heard or experienced a cardiologist in such a hurry to get to the lab unless he/she already knows it’s a real STEMI (gotta keep those D2B numbers low). More often, they will keep the cath lab staff as well as the patient draped and lying on the table while they finish some task. These docs work like yeomen.

i think Kayson is not understanding that the resident isnt his servant but a physician in training and that in the end he is the one responsible when he signs the chart, if he doesnt put the attention in he is at fault

Sounds like Dr. Kayson knew that he was at fault yet he was trying to put all the blame on someone else. Makes someone wonder if he has had made past mistakes.

Back when doctors were smoking inside buildings with windows closed. BTW, my grandfather said he was running his own clinic, and smoking while he was examining patients. That was 50+ years ago, not in the US.

When I visited Cairo, I remember everyone smoking everywhere. The pollution was so bad that we lit cigarettes inside the cab just to at least breathe a little easier. I do miss being able to smoke in diners with a cup of coffee.

My dad is 77 years old. He remembers being a teenager and getting a tooth pulled at the dentist--and knowing that the dentist had a scotch with his lunch, because he could smell it on him. Lol. And this was in the US.

I think that was the episode that Susan told Kayson that if he ever did that type of thing to her again, 'she'd have him before the board so fast he'd be lucky to keep his practicing licence.' Assertion was key

Two interesting things nobody has pointed out that I believe were done on purpose by the writers/director. Dr. Lewis lights a filtered cigarette. Dr. Kayson pulls out a VERY obviously hand rolled cigarette Granted by 1995 most people just bought cigarettes in packs, so it says something that Dr. Kayson still hand rolls his own. It speaks to both his views on tradition and his views on personal autonomy/individualism. Second, Dr. Lewis refuses to give Dr. Kayson a light when his fails, while smoking right next to him. Any current or former smoker knows that's a HUGE "fuck you" even today in 2023.

I'm an MLT at a small day clinic (no urgent care and few specialties who mostly write referrals (save for OB sending us patients for GGT's) and it still can get stressful as hell. Can't imagine pulling a 12hour rotation in an ER on a regular basis. People need some kind of outlet. Obviously, smoking is an extremely unhealthy one and I'm also sure all who work in medicine know this. Just goes to show how we react under stress. Plus, who knows how long these two have been smoking. Could have started as teenagers and well, yah, doesn't take long for your body to become addicted

I wouldn't call it a wink, but he definitely gave her an encouraging smile. There's a scene (can't remember which episode) where Morgenstern tells Susan he respects her skills but notes her inability to assert herself, which leads to doctors like Kayson talking over her. Maybe he takes this hearing as a sign that might be starting to change.
