This video has me in tears. Especially seeing how far you have come from here. I’m 12 weeks from graduating and I’m so anxious about starting my role of a nurse. I’m so afraid of hurting a patient. I just really want to be the best nurse. This video is very encouraging and just you saying you drive to work and your not scared and you feel confident makes me feel better.

Your first day sound EXACTLY like my first day!!! I had someone go to the OR and didn’t know the proper charting/paper work process, someone who needed blood because their hemoglobin was 4.7, and a pt who had laid over a bed rail at home for 13 hours and has so much tissue necrosis that they were turning septic. All things I had never had to do while on orientation! Haha you seriously learn something new each day in the ED.

I used to work in a lab where where we washed red blood cells. It is a pretty straightforward process, we just add saline and centrifuge the RBCs to remove any plasma from the RBCs. This is done because plasma usually has antibodies that could cause the person to have a bad reaction, especially if they had received several transfusions before. So to be safe and prevent the chance of a reaction, we will "wash" the RBCs.

I am a new grad nurse about to start my second week off orientation. I work in a small 16 bed ER, which is in fact the smallest ER in the city I live in. While it is the smallest ED, it is also on of if not the highest acuity ED due to the close proximity to many nursing homes and psychiatric facilities. (I include the psych hospitals because we have a contract for all the EDOs from the police department which means that frequently 2-4 of our beds are already minimal capacity are taken up by psych patients for hours to days at a time). I got a 10 week orientation after having a 4 week internship in my last semester of nursing school. I share your super scared mentality. I have found solice in that my former preceptor and charge RNs, as well as the other RNs on the unit are always available to help me should I need it (which is frequently) as well as an educator assigned to my unit which conducts frequent office sessions with me and reviews my charts at random to conduct PI teaching sessions with me and make sure I am not vulnerable from a legal standpoint. All in all, while I feel like I have alot of learning to do and progress to make, I feel like my facility is the perfect place in terms of high acuity exposure and new grad support as compared to other classmates I have spoken to who feel like their facilities are letting them drown.
