Today we're talking Artpop, Lady Gaga's third album that many consider to be either her "flop era" or her misunderstood masterpiece that was ahead of its time. The album was inspired by pop art, adn the likes of Warhol and Jeff Koons, as well as how their work (and GaGa's music) operates in the high art world. The album is also inspired by high art from the Renaissance, like Boticelli's Birth of Venus. There are actualyl several Venus references in this era, be it Gaga's costumes, or the song on the album of the same title. I can't exactly remember the Warhol soupcan metaphor Gaga used to describe the album, but you can hear me make sense of it in the video. In Artpop, GaGa also grappbles with being a pop star, and an "archetypal" blonde one at that, and how society treats these stars. She covers this is songs like Applause, Donatella, Mary Jane Holland, and others. Love or hate the album, the Artpop era is a conversation piece on its own, because over the decade it's inspired several conversations as to what constitutes low and high art, what exactly "pop" and "popular" mean, how art is canonized, and how it's remembered.

Her biggest mistake of this era, and probably of her career, was working with R Kelly. She had to have known things about him even then. Still, I wish she replaced the original DWUW with the solo version or the duet with Xtina, cause it's a great song on its own.

@sparklefairy34 But it didn't require digging. Anyone who had any inkling of pop culture at all was aware of the allegations. Gaga having always talked about how much she loves pop culture, especially during this era when the literal theme of the album was a culmination of art and pop culture, absolutely knew.

It was how she incorporated EDM into the music too. No major pop star has ever just not sang for a minute or so and let a song break down into a long ass instrumental like in Swine. She also wasn't afraid to sound bizarre, "ugly" or experiment vocally. It is very quintessential Gaga. It's peak Gaga at her purest form. This is why I love Artpop. You can't really hear any other artist being able to cover or record most of those songs. It was also so ambitious and admirable in that regard.
@navanillera
@navanillera Жыл бұрын
Instrumental breaks were already very common within the BigRoom EDM scene. What was unusual for Swine is how abrasive that break was, which is why I liken it more to the hardstyle/hyperpop music of today.

I think the intention behind the album with the huge inspiration from Warhol and his work is coming into fruition. His work wasn’t consider good or even artistic during its inception but overtime became a huge staple in art culture, Artpop is on a similar trajectory in the sense of it wasn’t well received during its release but over time it will slowly take its rightful place as a high art pop record. I don’t think it was supposed to be a success in the traditional pop music sense it’s supposed to be a success in a high art sense. It takes time and ridicule.
@inma5665

also the purpose of the album was precisely merging whats considered high and low brow or pop and art to make it one, hence ARTPOP they belong together, they were talking as if gaga was trying to segregate them or insinuating as if she view pop as low brow, bitch she became famous with the catch phrase "pop music will never be low brow" critics didn't get it at all, they were really saying anything and counter-arguing with a strawman lmao

I had the privilege of having pit seats at the ArtRave and i gotta say, Seeing it live made the entire vision come together and make sense. The management switch before the album release was the biggest factor in the death and wasted potential of the era. Venus should of been the 2nd single like originally planned, Then G.U.Y, Then perhaps "Manicure" or "Sexxx Dreams" (the original planned lead single) since they are more mainstream and digest-able in a top40 setting

I do think ARTPOP helped plant the seeds to prime people for the maximalist, hyperpop sound that would come in the years after the album release. You can see that come full circle when you listen to ARTPOP and Dawn of Chromatica back to back - what she was going for for ARTPOP becomes more fully realized when you listen to DoC

I'm sorry this will be a long comment, but ARTPOP is something I will write out my thoughts for. I have been a Gaga fan since around 2009, but I didn't "become" a Little Monster until just before she injured her hip in 2012. So I was hyper-present for everything leading up to ARTPOP. It was really the 1st Gaga album release I experienced as it happened, & that is probably one of the reasons why it has such a huge place in my heart. She announced ARTPOP's release date(s) just days before my birthday, so that in of itself was special to me as well. I loved the album when I heard it back then, & I've loved it every single day afterwards. I loved her theatrics in interviews, in performances, in mundane things like leaving & arriving at airports & studios. I even had the app & made quite a few "artworks" on there. The creativity spoke to me during a time when I was more focused on making art myself in a special art program in high school. I defended her a lot back then, knowing that most of the people were just looking at the surface of the album & not looking deeper into it. I know the era in general had it's fair share of bumps (DWUW & her management break-up, namely), but I believe it was one of her better conceptualized eras ― it just had the misfortune of falling a bit shy on the execution (which wasn't entirely Gaga's fault or within her control). The fact that it's been gaining recognition in the last 3-4 years & is gaining in popularity in the world of streaming, goes to show that it is genuinely a piece of art that can hold it's own. The older it becomes, the more it fulfills it's wish of being a high-art album. I am THRILLED to see what will happen in the fall with it's 10th anniversary.

I was a later comer to ARTPOP, I listened years after it came out and it confused cuase I remember when the album came out people were going crazy, and then people started trashing it and saying it wasnt good, I didnt listen to Gaga a lot at the time so I just thought it was maybe not a good record...but a few years later when I finally got to it it slapped, I was like "why were people hating on this?", I really liked it and it might not be the sofisticated thing they promoted like but is very good, I think maybe it was so hyped up that it backfired and people didnt really saw what they were saying, when I got to it I thought I was going to listen to something bad or generic, but the songs are super fun, maybe if she would have promo it in a smarter way and not painting it as if it was something never done before high qlty stuff art that you wont undertstand kinda album people would have been more forgiving...still I feel people overracted with the negative responde cause in the end the music is good, Im happy that I got to it with really no bias other than expecting probably something meh, cause I now listen and enjoy it here and there, and Applause is a hit that doesnt really get old

33:17 A succintly spot-on explanation as to why ARTPOP resurged in popularity. The generation that's currently behind that resurgence most likely weren't/aren't dwelling on (or at least aware of) the backlash the album had received. This may seem deceiving given her mainstream success 10+ years ago, but she had yet to solidify herself as the renowned artist that she is today either. ARTPOP is loved in 2023 because of the rose-colored glasses we can put on today which block out everything else but the music itself. Also the nostalgia factor, probably.

1. I'll rank ARTPOP in the 3rd to 5th lol it changes. My 1st and 2nd are Chromatica and BTW! 2. If ARTPOP was released today, I think it would depend on the current media perception on Gaga and factors that could've affected beforehand. If Gaga did release it now, especially with the GP loving her now, it'll definitely smash lmao especially with how people of different generations appreciating more of the eccentric side of music and performances like for example Melanie's PORTALS. 3. I think that it's kind of ahead of its time, but not due to it's so-called "experiemntal production" but mostly because on how she did try to integrate art with music, like I appreciate the effort and I can see the result, it's just unfortunate many tragic things happened behind the scenes. I don't think we can actually say something is "ahead of its time" though because that would usually make music also sound "outdated", and this is all can be based on our own perception, but there's no such thing as outdated music. They'll always come back in the pop scene lmao.

I was recovering from a really tough couple of months during the year it came out back in 2013, so it’s an album I really hold close to my heart. I swear I remember every single moment of this era as I was on tumblr and instagram going crazy with her appearances and outfits. I love that the era is getting somewhat of a revival nowadays and getting its well-deserved flowers. this is just wishful thinking, but I’m hoping she does something for the 10 year anniversary this November 😅

Oh i remember how i cried when she performed it firstly on iTunes. I Wanna Be With You anyone? ;-) Gaga was a real warrior during ARTPOP as she fought not only her physical trauma, but the depression (which felt) for The Born This Way Ball Tour and the betrayal of some of her friends /partners. Wonderful Era to me nevertheless. God loves LG and more to come!

I believe that also one of the reasons why Artpop underperformed was the fact by the time it came out, EDM trend in pop music was already slowly dying out. In 2012 and 2013 we witnessed the rise of "anti-pop stars" such as Lana and Lorde with their minimalistic approach to pop music. Their musical style was like a breath of fresh air on pop music scene in mid 2010s. Also hip hop started to gain more traction in mainstream pop music scene. In a way, ARTPOP is a product of it's time, but then again it aged like a fine wine. It's "experimental" production helped ARTPOP to stood up to the test of time. Imo, it even aged better than her later albums Joanne and Chromatica.

EDM acually started to be popular then, and then reached it's peak in 2015/16 2013 had EDM songs ofc (like Titanium, and other David Guetta songs) but dance-pop, and electropop were THE genres of early 2010s, especially the party dance-pop songs
@juaking04
@juaking04 Жыл бұрын
I disagree, edm had been popular and an influence in mainstream music since the early 2010s. It really didn't see its peak until 2013/14. More of dance pop started to fade out. Like you said anti pop or indie pop was starting to influence pop like lorde lana del rey, along with hip hop with songs like dark horse, fancy, problem, we cant stop. I guess you can say pop was starting to become more edgier while edm blossomed. Unlike the dancy, energetic pop sound from the early 2010s. My personal criticism of artpop at the time was it look like gaga was chasing a trend of trying to be edgy, when gaga had already started that, she was better than that, she could've done something massive if she went her own route

Applause solely about Gaga, for Gaga? main character syndrome? Applause is literally a love letter to her fans and community, it's about how during the BTWBT the only thing that kept her going was the applause and the excitement from the fans every night, to the point detriment, of enduring pain and numbing herself until she couldn't humanly go further and literally broke herself requiring bone surgery, applause is a testament to her devotion for her little monsters!

ARTPOP is probably my favorite Gaga album - I really wasn't on social media when the album was released so I had no idea some considered it a flop until years later. I do think the music itself is less experimental than the visual aspects of the era. The music is great, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't say it was that uncoventional as far as EDM pop music goes. I think it's pretty much a perfect pop album with a cool concept.

Artpop Reminds me A LOT of Renaissance from Beyoncé and Vice-Versa! Both of these albums are SONICALLY Gaga’s and Bey’s BEST albums! Like Renaissance ,Artpop felt like a celebration of life,art,and pop! Gaga stated that the songs on this album were purposely sung and engineered to make a person feel “euphoric” and to make them want to dance!! Artpop is the reason why I got into Lady Gaga and Stan her till this day! From the Vocals,to the colors,to the MUSIC VIDEOS,to the multiple single worthy songs on that album,to the OVERALL Vibe and replay factor ,is why that is Gaga’s best ever album! And the only reason I compared Artpop to Renaissance and Vice-Versa is because I am a Gaga and Bey stan if you couldn’t tell lol 😂😝💅🏾!! Had this album been released post pandemic alongside Renaissance or a little bit before or after it would have put Gaga back in her musical Prime! I’m not saying she still isn’t in her prime,BUT she would be selling as much or even more of this album as she did with “The Fame” “The Fame Monster” and “Born This Way”! Had this album been released post pandemic Tik Tok would eat every song up,nothing but edits of the songs would be made on ALL asocial media platforms,and Gaga would most likely have dominated the charts too! Gaga is truly ahead of her time because Gen-Z EATS music like Artpop up nowadays! Like come on songs like Venus,Manicure,G.U.Y.,Gypsy,Aura,etc. would have Been SOOO MUCH bigger had she release these songs in 2023! Also Artpop was ahead of it’s time not sonically,BUT meaning wise. Lady Gaga has a very abstract way of thinking in terms of music and art and not many thought on the same wavelength as her. I mean all artist are on different wavelengths BUT I will say as a Stan anything I watch Gaga Sing or perform a lot of the times the meanings are not always in your face! It takes days and sometimes weeks to fully understand what Gaga means or is portraying…

Artpop is the reason I am now a Gaga fan. I was of course aware of her and really liked her already, but only knew her hits and more popular songs. The thing about this album is that - sure, instrumentally was nothing new, but was definitely new to her and sure was a new level of lyrical writing that showed a lot of her evolution as an artist. So I think what made Artpop ahead of its time is the combination of all its different elements - the production, the hyperpop leaning sound, the performances and appearances, all combined to a truly new experience that is difficult to top.

omg i was so excited to see an ARTPOP video from you!! such great research and care is always put into the eras videos so i'm always so glad to see one of my favorites! so i count gaga's first album as two albums because i was in middle school when they were released and didn't understand how EPs or anything worked lol, so for me ARTPOP is 2nd for me in her discography, after The Fame Monster (technically the EP). this album is soooo important to me, not just for how amazing it was to watch one of my favorite artists go so wild into performance art or the awesome production, but the lyrics in some of the songs on ARTPOP have gotten me through a lot. "a hybrid can withstand these things / my heart can beat with bricks and strings" is a standout for me. as to your second question, it's kind of hard to imagine ARTPOP coming out now because i honestly believe it was so influential on other artists and albums. but suspending that thought, i think it would have been more widely acclaimed if it did come out now. i think we're... not more accepting necessarily, but more ready to listen to music that might sound a little "crazy" (even though it technically was closer to the mainstream pop of the time than i think some of us like to admit) and definitely more ready to watch albums be mixed with performance art. for the last question, i do think it was ahead of its time in some aspects, and i think that shows in the fact that it's getting so much more attention years after its release, and people can see its influence in other albums/artists. i just think since i was an ARTPOP stan immediately and had to fend off the annoying people who were verrrrry eager to trash it, i'll always have a part of me that thinks it was ahead of its time. great video!!!!

The general public was so mean to Gaga back then for being “pretentious” and now that’s one of her most celebrated qualities (from what I’ve seen on social media), calling it “camp” and saying she’s “mothering” and whatnot. i do think the desire to tear her down at a time when pop fans were at constant war with each other played a huge part in the way artpop was received. personally I always loved it and still do, I’m hoping she at least acknowledges it’s 10th anniversary this November

In my opinion, ARTPOP is not as "experimental" as fans make it out to be, but it's still a great album. The concept could've been interesting, but there's no scope or no concrete concept imo. I think that she was supposed to integrate both the album (as the "sonic") and the era (as the "visual") because the album would've make a lot of sense if you do watch her performances and such during the era along with listening to the album. It's far from being a flop jajaja. Overall, still a solid album. There's no bad Gaga album at all 🥹 she's consistent with quality. Good job on this video! Please do more Gaga era analysis ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ

Maybe not as experimental as other artists or albums like BJORK or alternative music, but in vocal performance and production Gaga and her producers did experiment with sounds and structure in terms of songwriting. A song like Venus which she co-produced and wrote is very versatile in sound and vocal performance, it's a journey and an experience the first time you listen to it, or what about Aura or Swine when the sound and vocals are more aggressive or affected with auto tune. My guess is that the album was supposed to be more EDM, as some of the demos that can be found here on KZbin prove it, but the record label forced Gaga to change it so it could be more in tune with what she did in 2008 with The fame and be more accessible and therefore a commercial success to the public. The album is not bad, but I agree that it feels a bit messy or all over the place due to these problems with her label, her manager and also the hip injury that affected Gaga emotionally, as she witnessed her friends and some collaborators disappear after the surgery.The era was already starting in a strange and rushed way, continuing with big changes until its end.

ARTPOP ran so the hyperpop girlies could walk! I say this because it was looking for something similar to this album on Tumblr, and that was the way I found PC Music and SOPHIE, no 2010's EDM used textures this abrasive on its production! It's no wonder that Charli XCX was so requested by fans on Dawn of Chromatica, and the influence on major foreign artists like Pabllo Vittar in making albums of experimental electronica.

Looking back at Lady Gaga’s past eras pre-ARTPOP, you can really see how she also paved the way as inspiration for kpop at that time. Like hee fingerprints are AAAAALLLL over it and I know this cause around 2012-2013 is when I got into kpop and I was a Little Monster at the time as well. At that time, yeah it was ahead of it's time. I didn't see it as her shoving it down our throats so to speak. To me she was just trying to show us how vulnerable she could be and that her ARPOP could mean anything. Also, let's recall that at that time there was a a war between Gaga fans and Katy fans because they both released a single at that time which was Applause and Roar, so Katy cats and other people were trying to make a rivalry out of both womanX

i always felt like the singles choice on ARTPOP was kinda off. i don’t like Applause as a lead single whatsoever. i would choose G.U.Y. as the lead single. and then Venus as a 2nd single, MANiCURE 3rd, Do What U Want 4th, Dope 5th and Applause as the last single. yall i’m intrested in your opinion about this. which singles would you choose?

One is my favorite album by Lady Gaga. I believe it would have performed similarly or perhaps worse today, because it belongs to a style of electronic dance music that is more popular among rave-goers than the general public. I do not think that the album would have appealed to the general public even today, but I do think that it would have attracted electronic music fans, especially those who attend live events or who enjoy more aggressive styles of electronic dance music. I consider it to be an ahead-of-its-time album, but only partially, because a lot of electronic dance music already resembled this kind of sound when the album was released, since DJ White Shadow, who produced the record, was already involved in the electronic dance music scene at the time, but he was in the underground. That underground sound has now been incorporated in small parts into the mainstream electronic dance music sounds. Therefore, I view this album as a revolutionary innovation, which is a type of innovation that influences the contemporaries of the innovation around it in pieces, but it does not change the whole industry. I particularly admire her approach to addressing difficult topics over what could be distracting electronic dance music beats. I think this is very ahead-of-its-time and I think that a lot of the club music that we will hear in the future will combine deeper songwriting with equally hard or harder club beats. Honestly, I think it set the standard for this genre. In a messed-up way even the R.Kelly folk-pop fits in with some of the things that are on the album especially on tracks like Swine and ManICure.

I think that artpot was so conceptual that it it went over a lot of peoples heads especially after born this way was so literal. But the point was to look at the album through the lens of an artist and not consumer. Theres a revolving door she created with the album and we still talk about it today so the mission was executed. If it was well received when it came out it wouldn't mirror the art she was emulating

Naomi nailed it at 20:39 to 21:08. The central flaw in Artpop's promotion was the misapplication of the pop art concept. Gaga tried to sell something that couldn't be sold. Warhol's Pop Art was a visual commentary on pop culture. Pop art is by nature a reaction. A feeling. The problem was that Gaga tried to sell that feeling as the inspiration for the music on the album. She tried to tell us how to feel about the product (the music) when only we the consumers can decide that. I think that's why I always thought the entire album promotion felt kind of nebulous and disconcerting at the time. The concept was confusing because it just couldn't work in the way she intended. This was an excellent deep dive, Naomi. Thanks for curating this.

The title track “ARTPOP” I think this song is talking about art and how one uses it for liberation. She references her own artistry and how it affects those who connect with it. And that's the way art is, essentially. We take what we need to take from it, and that's why I think she says "My artpop could mean anything." Art is whatever you need it to be. The relationship between the audience and the piece is a powerful one because it creates a powerful union ( "We could belong together"). It's a brilliant song and one of my favorites on the album. #ARTPOP

I can’t shake the feeling that Chromatica is the Redemption Arc that ARTPOP needed. I think the reason ARTPOP seemed so discombobulated and confusing is because due to Gaga’s management at the time not being as invested in the project, she wasn’t able to give that experience that i think she was going for with ARTPOP. She wanted people to put themselves in her shoes, she wanted to tell her story and make all this commentary about being this Rebel suddenly turned adored yet scrutinized figure, and as self absorbed as that sounds, it’s a narrative that deep down most artists and storytellers want to tell. She wanted to put herself into her work face-front, and the people that were helping her in that endeavor were not exactly wanting it as much as they wanted the money, and i think that’s very tragic in a way, trying to feed into consumerism almost killed ARTPOP. Im so glad Gaga could finally realize the narrative of showing her view of things to her audience in Chromatica, the new-found care and subtlety in it is much more organic and honestly feels a lot more Gaga, compared to the honestly kind of Money-Grubbing feeling ARTPOP had ( as much as i like it ).

It was meant for 2013. It came out during a shift in culture society. It brought an awareness that no other album or artist can come close to reaching. It brought the thought process of the artist. The scribbles on the canvas. You sit down in front of an empty canvas. With no idea. No thought. No word to explain how it is you feel. So what do you do? You cause an artistic explosion. You attack the canvas with everything that you are. And you don’t stop attacking. Until, finally that canvas bares your entire emotion. And within that expression you are now able to understand the basis of your emotion. And it is love. It is rage. It is joy. It is sorrow. It is celebration. It is obscure. It is death. And it is life. Ppl can enjoy the album today because they now hold the capacity to understand the fragile capacity of one’s mind. We’re in an era where mental health awareness is now socially accepted to speak about. Before ARTPOP it was not. After ARTPOP it is. ARTPOP is the delivery of a mental breakdown. And I mean that in the most sincere, honorable, respectful, positive way possible. It revealed the madness of human nature. The Mad Hatter.

ARTPOP only flaw was coming out at the time hipster culture was in. That shitty movement was all about dumbing on anything mainstream without proper inspection of value and meaning. Honestly the worst part of that decade when it comes to art and culture. I was so fed up with so many people undermining pop culture and femine related topics and interests that at the time I just abandoned western media and dedicated myself to k-pop and anime. The few exceptions for music I had were Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift and Nick Jonas. Anything else I was not paying attention to. It was so much so that I only listened to ARTPOP for the first time by 2015 and immediately fell in love with it.

Artpop is and will always be the pioneer album of its time (2012-2013), I can't find any time better than this. She solidified her status as a global sensation/ art performer/ LGBTQ+ icon with Born This Way Ball and Artrave, and her music helped pave the way of Metoo movement and the Fourth-wave feminism. Also, the fandom/ twitter stan wars at the time were also so iconic (and kinda cringey tbh), the Internet climate would be totally different if none of that happened.

artpop has always been my favorite gaga album lol. since applause was released i knew that this album was going to be her magnum opus. i think the public wasn't ready to let go of the "old" lady gaga. this album was a huge evolution for her sound, her persona, her values, and her personal life. i think people didn't realize the pain and trauma she was going through until after joanne, a star is born, and five foot two. this album came from some of the most painful and traumatic experiences in her career, and i think that in a way lady gaga was trying to destroy her past image to try and move on from the old version of herself that the world was attached to and used to. she wrote a lot about death, personal battles with drug abuse, losing people she loved, and escapism. it is a messy, heart wrenching album when you really unpack it, but from first glance it's just more pop music. i think that people who are getting on the train now didn't give it a chance at the time because often times public perception can influence opinions more than we are aware of. i think that for many people, they doubted her ability to top her past work, to rebound from her hip injury and hiatus, and i think most of all, her management was pushing her in a direction that they knew worked for gaga, but she wasn't interested in being their overworked puppet. the album is a rebellion. it's amazing what she did on this album, and people are FINALLY realizing how cannon, artistic, and powerful her artistic statement was. she predicted the downfall of lady gaga, and she wrote an album about it. artpop is fucking legendary.

17:43 Art pop is a very direct play of a consumers idea of art and pop music, imo. I feel like things were being said, but misunderstood due to the media’s perspectives being focused on the contradictions of Artpop rather than on the innate contradiction that is Artpop as a concept. Gaga seems to talk about “art” as what it was previously before mass consumption. greater effort in production, exclusivity, symbolism and depth, less so an attempt to sell, rather express. That’s a very intuitive idea of art we have today, not a literal, real one. Commissions and class were a part of the art world after all. It’s still an idea that exists however, that art is respectable due to it’s characteristics. Pop is seen as it’s opposite simply because it’s consumable; less effort in prod., little symbolism, attempt to sell and accessibility. Of course, this is an intuitive idea of pop music, not a literal one. However, there’s still this idea of low quality fast selling art for pop, not as respectable. Art for art, art that exists outside of respectability be it for higher or lower classes is scrutinized by the public. From a DETERMINIST pov, higher classes seem to mostly care about the presentation of depth and respectability (preference for “art”). Middle to lower classes mostly care about relating to the art, though respectability seems to play a part in what they prefer also (preference for pop). In having obscure, obtuse almost hidden meanings in her songs with crazy costumes, Gaga isn’t accessible, she’s not relatable (=\= pop). For those same reasons, alongside the use of provocative sexuality, it also looks like there’s no depth to her (=\= art). None of this is the truth, none of this is nuanced, yet those were very popular narratives about Gaga throughout her career. She was making pop music (art,..pop) yet treated like she was too artsy (inaccessible) and too empty (pop). The public didn’t understand her, neither did the critics. Even if art essentially has the purpose of being the product of someone’s creativity. The public, and many celebrities, have treated and seen Gaga as anything but art or pop. To me, that’s a motive as to why she was trying to “bind” the two together, even if they don’t exclude each other. Art pop, to me, was a statement rather than an attempt. It simply inspired the album.

I think it was a conversation that embraced the union and irony of art-pop instead of trying to disprove their separation…Plenty to talk about in terms of what art is to the public, the one’s who the art is sold to, alongside camp as a movement that embraces irony and unconventionality. Being inspired by the Renaissance for the cover album of a heavy edm album, flipping concepts (ex. GUY) and songs like Donatella speak for themselves, imo.

I think the problem that happened was the rollout being all over the place and the way Gaga put the album on a high pedestal without meeting expectations for the album. I feel as a main criticism I had for Gaga for years is that she’s always presented herself this as a alternative experimental avant garde based music artist but her music never matched it, she made the same mainstream pop music as her peers (Katy Perry, Kesha, Rihanna) I always tell people whenever an artist has a disconnect between their public persona and their music it ends up not working out well for the artist themselves, as quiet as it is kept contemporary female artists like Janelle monae, FKA Twings, grimes, Rosalia, charli xcx, Rina Sawayama, Kelela, solange, and even Beyoncé (post-I am Sasha fierce) etc are exactly what Gaga thought she was as they are better at executing what they represented in their brands more specifically in their music. The Artpop era best made that longtime criticism the most I feel it would’ve worked better in its execution if Gaga took much a longer time to conceptualize she should’ve dropped it in 2014 as suppose to 2013 when the born this way era just recently ended and unfortunately ended abruptly due to Gaga’s hip surgery. Overall I like the album as a whole I don’t think it was a head of it time at all I think the rollout and Gaga not conceptualizing the message for the album was it’s reasons for its failure. But it end up being a blessing in disguise for her as she was able to expand and cultivate the type of artist she truly wanted to be afterwards with cheek to cheek, Joanne, and Chromatica
