We come to a close on the school festival arc today. The dastardly force known as Snidely Whiplash, I mean Gentle Criminal has at long last been put away. The foe vanquished. And…the heroes aren’t even sure they know what to do with him because the police genuinely didn’t know if they wanted to mark him as anything other than MAYBE a public menace. Because of Gentle’s methods the heroes are just at a loss on the circumstance. Deku even goes so far as to do what he can to keep Gentle out of trouble. Sparring not fighting. A joke not a break in. And even though Deku and Gentle ERUPTED THE EARTH as they fought Deku has a bloody nose and has dirt all over him. In comparison to the COUNTLESS injuries he’s had as permanent scarring, he walks away with just a sting. A mild inconvenience. They put their hearts and souls into the battle but morality is often not taken into regard for consequences. Intentions are though. But considering all the trouble Deku went through I’m sure it’ll be worth it. All-Might visibly covers his face with both hands trying not to give Eri ANY concern over Deku. Eri is as usual fast to pick up on there being ANY concern as she holds onto Mirio’s jacket. Crisis mode activated. A PUNCTUAL concert?! Madness. “Hero too” is one of the sweetest moments in all of MHA and there’s some competitors. Mina successfully taught everyone to dance, INCLUDING Iida who has THE most fluid animations he’s ever had. (And he gets a solo where he has the perfect flair of Iidaness.) Mina fulfills her promise to Mineta and every girl dances with him specifically. And he’s GENUINELY delighted. The special effects aren’t just random lights but shown how they’re made in real time with Todoroki making scaffolding for everyone to dance on, Uraraka getting suspended by Sero to float people, Koda asking animals to fly around as decoration, Deku doing full acrobat work with Aoyama to make him a disco ball. And the music just POPS. You can see throughout the song Groose and his girlfriend are trying their hardest NOT to smile but they break slowly throughout the song til they dance along with giant smiles on their faces. (Add Bakugo to the list of people trying not to smile at something not a competition. But he doesn’t break until he finds the competition again.) Aizawa is proud of the kids and Present Mic couldn’t ask for anything better after the provisional license class with the kids. Jiro overcomes her concerns of music being uninvolved with her wanting to be a hero. Hobbies and careers are so different and while you CAN combine them you have to be CERTAIN you want it that way. Eri gets so excited she just explodes in her 1st smile that should make ANYONE cry. And Mirio even asks Sir Nighteye to look down to see her. Nighteye is also a person who doesn’t want to smile around Deku but ultimately breaks when he sees he CAN be proven wrong. And they even drop the words bright future MULTIPLE times because THIS is the future that Nighteye wanted to see. THIS is what he was talking about in his last words. Joy balances the sorrow. Gentle Criminal is a silly villain BECAUSE it’s to balance all the horrors of the Overhaul raid. This is supposed to just be a good time and that’s what they give us. And this moment is wholesome incarnate. Class B’s operatic play in a blender went well. And Monoma sounds the exact same acting in this play as he does on the field. Which…actually implies we aren’t seeing the real him. And that’s interesting. You could probably add the avatar casts remarks about The Ember Island Players into it with absolutely no one batting an eye. Darth Tetsu of Gandor against Lord Romeo Skywalker over how he will save his wife/sister someone PLEASE help me. XD they had Princess Leia and Juliette be the same character oh god it was ALREADY weird in “A New Hope.” This…needs to be injected into my veins anyway. Must…analyze…full play. All-Might goes FULL dad mode calling his son past curfew a gajillion times. And getting lectures from the faculty. Hound Dog enters guidance counselor mode and does the most relaxing thing he can think of. THREATENING Deku to have fun and shaking All-Might in what might be my #1 pick for favorite funny animation in all of MHA. Eri describing the concert with Mirio mimicking her every move, and her getting sad mid explanation for the SINGLE moment Deku left her sight BLEW ME AWAY. Only to pick right back up for Deku to cry at her feeling completely safe and unguarded as any little girl should. Groose is impressed, Iida tries to assign MORE happiness homework but gets stopped by the other classes saying no one is going to speak badly about you after that. Iida bows but needs lessons from Inasa for how it’s REALLY done. (If he did the Inasa bow I think I would have been unable to watch the rest of the episode from laughing too hard) The Beauty Pageant was a sweet scene. Kendo does martial arts, Bibimi brings in a MECH…is she a SUPPORT student?! I think she’s a support class student who helps make people’s gear! I think she’s the designer for the hero costumes the kids made based on that! The support class would DEFINITELY be involved in the costumes and this totally explains Deku’s redesigns as they workshopped his idea from his hero notebook multiple times! My respect went up for her about 1000 fold realizing that. The other 5 girls in the beauty pageant all have cool designs. Shoutout to #7 on the list. Fish girl is an amazing design. And Nejire wins by being a magical girl. I haven’t seen Sailor Moon but I’d be shocked if there wasn’t inspiration from that show for that. And shoutout for Kendo getting dressed back in her class uniform to run back on stage and IMMEDIATELY knock out Monoma trying to advertise votes for her. That is a DRIVEBY knockout. Now in the stills it mainly shows Deku and Mirio playing with Eri throughout the rest of the day and Deku prepping a candy apple with Sato. Which is the sweetest thing to end off on. But with no context, I do know for a fact that Uraraka and Deku actually spent a good amount of the day together too, share crepes and hung out. I was hoping to find stills in this scene of them doing that but no such luck. That is a canon circumstance though. And in the post credits we have La Brava and Gentle both supporting each other in anyway they can find. La Brava knows Gentle wants her out of jail and wants to pay for what he’s done so she’s playing along with the brainwashing idea he cooked up. And while they WILL be charged, it seems the police have a vested interest in keeping them close in a positive way. I’ll just say if these two were guidance counselors at UA THAT would be an amazing role for them. They truly do have hope to recover from their ways riding on nothing but the depth of care they have for each other AND shown for others in the small ways during their schemes. I don’t know what they get charged for but I don’t see anything longer than a year. This is just a happy ending episode. But there’s one last mini arc to get through in season 4. And I think this is THE most anticipated moment in season 4. Yes more than Deku going Infinite 100%. But we’ll save that for next time.

I'm sharing again a comment I made long ago in the official Crunchyroll's clip because my belief in my words keep getting stronger: "In that sense, being a musician and being a hero are the same, huh?" The final nail in the coffin that saves Eri from Chisaki's shadow and brings back her smile is Jiro's music. Jiro, the hero, the musician, just rescued Eri. God, this is why I love mha. It’s not caught in the power escalation vacuum and trying to constantly fight god and his cousin (iykyk) and actually focuses on the day to day while still making it exciting. You may reach your “high” point in your early 20s, but you still have the rest of your life with various exciting events. Season 4 is the perfect example of how you can still make an exciting story without focusing on the Big Bad. I hope the manga takes plenty of time to heal after its current arc and that we see how these characters change the world, hopefully for the better. Horikoshi has proven he can go between big earth ending villains and small time thugs who just need help. And I love him all the more for it

Love how Izuku get's yelled at for fighting with Gentle, even though the teachers are the ones that said just one incident would get the festival cancelled. How did they expect him to react with that information? Anyways this arc is important in that it allowed the charachters to just have fun and be kids for a change, not only that but it allowed Izuku to show he could beat a villian all on his own now without help and without breaking his body in the process. It was crucial to see where his growth was at right now.

These are just excuses. No one would take him seriously? He has a provisional license therefore any choice he makes is correct? The teachers would have absolutely believed him, and it would have been far safer if he had gotten their help. The teachers chastised him because they were worried about his safety, and objectively getting their help would have been safer. Deku acted a bit recklessly because he wanted to protect the festival for Eri. While that may be very righteous, his teachers are far more concerned with his immediate safety.

I just wanna geek out about Jiro's backstory. Like, her parents are musicians and they taught her music because they love it and she loves it, but she also thought - without it being explicitly said - that her parents wanted her to be one too. And now that she's not pursuing it, it was a waste of everyone's time, like taking coursee towards a major you switched away from. And I love that her parents shut that whole insecurity down, one she couldn't reveal until she legit got an acceptance letter from UA. 'Be who you want, we taught you because we love music, maybe theres a way for you to use music as a hero too" aaaaa Also I love what the police officer said to Gentle at the end. There are SO many good parents in this manga/anime. Yes, there's garbage like Endeavor, but then you have Jiro's parents, Ochako's parents, Mamadoriya, and more that are wonderful people.

Seriously, how can people hate this arc when THIS episode if the payoff?! Jiro being in the forefront and becoming the Best Girl she was always meant to be, Eri finally being happy with her big bros Mirio and Midoriya, and just seeing all these kids have some good old-fashioned fun with NO interference is just nice. Who cares if it was light on action, you can't be this far into the series without being a LITTLE attached to these characters, so I genuinely don't see why people to this day dislike this arc.

It's great to say that one of Deku's greatest accomplishments is making a gurl who never knew joy smile. Of course, it's not just Deku who was responsible, but it just goes to show thag Deku is walking the path All Might set before him and giving people hope.
