A local radio station played this exact version every Friday a minute before midnight when I was 16 and then started a couple hours of some of the best, even if obscure hard rock songs. I felt like a badass staying up late and hearing this back in 1999.

Well, I just found this one - my late brother, Peter McHugh, was the creative director and producer of the "Night Belongs to Michelob" campaign when he worked for DDB-Needham in Chicago and is credited as producer on the platinum album. This version is only on the Crossroads boxed set and I do have the session tapes that he sent to me with just a simple note, "I've seen god." The story about the taping of the commercial is pretty cool - Clapton loved the venue for the Michelob spot and loved the band and loved my brother and they went back to the small pub after taping for a private show, to which Peter was invited. I love reading your memories.

I simply cannot understand why I can’t listen to this BADASS version on apple music. I guess there’s only so much that we can do with modern technology. Ironically, I can listen to the schlocky “Pop Muzik” but not this. As a kid of the 80s, I loved “The Night Belongs to Michelob” it is in the same vein as that David Sanborn Jools Holland NBC Sunday Night music show. Oh, and it’s clear that your brother was a BADASS, who clearly impacted my life!

@@cruz5262 Oh my gosh, you are so very kind to say that - he absolutely was a badass and I miss him every day. He had the most incredible memory and was into music early. This version is on the four-disc boxed Crossroads set. That whole Night series was great and Pete was so young in Chicago - he'd call me from a recording studio so I could hear Robert Cray - what a stinker! If you google his name, his obit will pop up and you can see some of the other badass stuff he created. Thank you.

This song was Great. I was young and I heard this song coming into the Port of Miami on a Cruse ship. Taking pictures at night on return from a day cruise when this song was popular. It was magical and then It stopped playing on the radio. I have finally found it again. I love it.

Clapton’s never done a bad version of this song. My personal favourite is the one on Just One Night, with Albert Lee. Some furious wah wah licks - the second solo is insane. But it’s all personal taste - I don’t buy into this ‘best ever’, because it’s all down to what you personally prefer. But this version kills as well. I love Nathan East’s bass playing - that man bosses it every time.

The very best version is probably the way JJ Cale did it and arranged it. It allows for the blues to come through louder. Years ago, Eric said that the first rule of covering a song is to make it yours. If you don't, you will always be compared to the original version. Not so much with this or with Cocaine because he made them his own

While I like the original version of "After Midnight," I think this version is much better. It's rare that artists can remake their own originals and make the remake sound better, but he pulled it off well in this case. (And I while I like the unplugged version of "Layla," I still prefer the original). Kudos!!
