Buddy has always been so humble. I’ve seen him several times and he’s the last man standing from his generation. He’s mentoring up and coming talent and his mission is to keep on playing the blues until he passes.

He is humble. That’s so true. And that’s what makes him in a class above so many others. He plays with some of the greatest musicians in the world. And he has so much class. He can be up front just stealing the show or he seems just as happy to just sit back and hang with a rhythm and listen. I am heartbroken that J.J. Cale is no longer with us. He was all about the music. It’s unbelievable if you think about how much J.J. Cale gave to music.

Four great guitarists sitting in a line, but the magic flows between number 3 & 4. That mischievous face of JJ Cale ricochets music & vibes to Eric & back, as the music hums like a well oiled machine. And Eric smiles, caught up in the vibe. It could have gone on for another 20 minutes or more & still sounded good. Music without ego, pure joy.

EC has long professed his admiration for JJ going back decades… saw Tedeschi Trucks on tour pre-covid in Hamburg with my son - he is just another level, not a showman but that’s what his other half is there for - check out many Grammys those two have between them and jointly -it’s nuts!!

I saw Derek Trucks smile ! I'll be seeing him for the first time this Aussie summer. Maybe the greatest electric guitar player of my 68 years. Certainly, the player with the greatest differential between the music he's producing and his emoting. A section wherein any other guitarist would do a deal with the devil to play just once, and Derek just raises his shoulders slightly. Then he looks across at JJ and Eric and smiles at their work. Bring's a tear to my eye. Doyle Bramhall II does not look uncomfortable in this company either.

Music fans of today know nothing other than musical rubbish. That's all they've known, that's all they've ever had. A few years ago I drove through Tulsa. I wanted to see the Golden Driller building where they run the Chili Bowl midget races. It was well worth the stop. As I was leaving, I needed to pick some tunes for the rest of my drive that day - I thought a couple seconds and then it hit me - JJ Cale was my only choice. What a great day that was.
