It is simply the lack or absence of a belief in gods and not a religion in itself. Neither does being an atheist advocate any political views. I'm not completely clear as to the harm to others, at this point in time. They don't burn witches. I know there are some places where creationism is taken seriously but besides that, religion seems fairly benign and probably in most cases a cultural artifact and traditional housing for morality.

And where does it start? If you read the Bible,it's morals tell you to kill your wife if she's not a virgin on her wedding night, if you see someone worship another god you kill him and his family and everyone in the town, that if you're children disrespect you it is commanded that they die, that all homosexuals should be killed. These are all commandments in the Bible. These are the the morals that for over a thousand years Christians practiced. They don't anymore because we're realizing that morals are not absolute as William Lane Craig thinks, but relative, and changing with time. Morals are innate in us as society-centered people. The Bibles morals are despicable, it's history inaccurate, it's science almost non-existent, it's greatest pronouncement (Golden Rule), practiced by all societies, it's greatest hero indistinguishable from any of a dozen other gods/sons of gods in the region at the time.

I would agree with your statement totally (almost). Atheism (and likewise, science) is not a religion as you say, because it is not a belief in gods, supernatural, paranormal entities, or life after death. All these notions must be believed upon with faith, as there is no evidence of them. Atheism, though, is a belief: that no gods exist, and an atheist must identify with this position to be considered atheist. Some person somewhere, totally ignorant of a concept of god or religion or even considering these notions, would not know about, and could not believe, in any religion's god. I would say such a person would not be an atheist (in his/her) mind, because he/she would have no conception of even considering the idea. Just like animals, especially all with lower intelligence than apes, almost certainly do not even have the intellect to consider a notion of god, and therefore, animals are not really atheists nor theists.

Thomas Jenkins You don't understand what logic means. Are you saying that the skydiver will not fall when he jumps out of the plane? That's the logical conclusion of jumping out of the plane - you will fall. Now, whether or not you want to go ahead and do it depends on your reasoning. You can reason that you have a parachute on, and have done it many times before, and therefore it is a relatively safe thing to do, but this does not change the logical conclusion that you will fall.

Yeah. Major flaw in this video. Atheism is not a religion. It doesn't even really qualify as an ideology, in the same sense that a lack of belief in Santa or the Tooth Fairy doesn't qualify as an ideology. There are ideologies that atheists tend to believe in. Humanism is a good one. Generally atheists just have a patchwork of values based on their experiences and their own reasoning, which could drastically conflict with those of other atheists. There are right wing atheists, left wing atheists, pro life atheists, pro choice atheists, atheists with no morals at all, atheists who care deeply about the environment, atheists who are climate change skeptics, atheists who reject evolution, atheists who don't really know anything about religion or atheism, atheists who are flat earthers. There is nothing that two atheists need to have in common to be atheists other than the fact that they don't believe any deities exist.

There is a mistake in the video. Around 2:50, it suggests that atheism is a religion. That's 100% untrue. Atheism is a 'religion' in the same way that not playing tennis is a 'sport.' Atheism is the rejection of religion based upon lack of evidence. It would be like calling someone an A-Santa Clausist or an A-Bigfootist. Labeling someone because of a supernatural being that he doesn't believe in (because there's no evidence) is absurd; the list would literally be endless (A-Zeusist, A-Apolloist, A-Thorist, etc.). If an atheist was presented with objectively quantifiable proof for a deity, he would accept that new information and incorporate it into his understanding of the universe. However, religious zealots, when faced with incontrovertible evidence that physics permit existence without a supernatural deity, simply deny the validity of that evidence for no reason other then it doesn't comply with the world-view they've already accepted. No I am not trolling. DNA did not prove evolution, it simply observed that humans have similar dna with other animals. Skeletal remains of early humans does not prove evolution either. It could have easily been an old man with arthritis. Yet evolutionists throw out every possibility if it excludes evolution. The whole thing is kind of quote mining, including the last bit, but I'd say the last bit was poorly mined because Lennox's argument was silly. Atheists don't "believe in atheism". Atheism is the rejection of the theistic claim that there is a god. That's what I think people don't understand. Atheists say there is probably no god, based on the current evidence. We don't say there absolutely is no God. To say so with certainty would take faith, and faith is what atheists/skeptics have a problem with.

Me personally? I'm not an atheist, but I learned a lot by asking them about their beliefs when I stopped listening to the condemnation of my ministers who've never even bothered to speak with one. I was always taught that an atheist was the worst thing that a person could be, but the atheists I know do more to improve the lives of the less fortunate than any church that I've ever attended, represent the smallest percentage of prison inmates, and are among the most tolerant people I've ever met.

It is true that black holes were first predicted by mathematics, but after that we've build telescopes and such to actually go find them. And lo and behold, we've found them. Nearly all mathematical predictions made about how the cosmos should operate, has been confirmed by direct observation (that includes the existence of Quasars, White Dwarves, Binary Star systems and their behaviour - all predicted before they were found).

I really don't think you thought much about what I wrote. It's one thing for His character/nature to never change and another for that unchanging being to create a plan where different things will occur. To equate that with a contradiction is ridiculous. There is a step of faith taken that they believe in, they use to say "they knew there was no god" they would have to be all knowing to know that, then over time many have shifted to say "they see no evident for the existence for god" but this is a presupposition (they believe in) that they use to reject all evidence. I absolutely agree that current religious texts should not be setting standards. Much for the same reasons. That said, I think parents and schools need to be better equipped(or more accurately, directed) in order to properly get the message to kids that the best you can do for society, is better it. But right now, Schools and parents can't do that very well. School isn't designed to, and current generations are simply bad parents because they're going into it essentially blind in most cases.

While it's true that a gnostic atheist believes that there are no gods, and asserts that he knows that there are no gods, the far more common agnostic atheists do not assert that there are no gods only that they don't believe that there are any gods. On a side note, there is no evidence for the existence of any god. For instance only a pair were taken of all the canine species and there has been some major changes since then. You would not need to take fish or microbes or any aquatic/marine species.
