He's truly one of the best guitarists of any generation, what technique, what touch... I don't understand why we don't talk about him as much as we talk about Satriani, Vai, Timmons, etc..

Actually most guitarists talk about Eric Johnson more than the guys you mention!

That hybrid picking technique is one I have yet to really explore and get under my fingers. Great lesson with licks that clearly demonstrate the difference between picking styles.

Eric has been talking in interviews for at least 37 years about the picking "up" away from the pick guard thing, talk about consistent! (see the 1986 guitar player magazine article). Not to be conflated with Troy Grady's downward pick slanting concept, which is mostly (and literally) tangential to what Eric is discussing here.

It took me 5 years of practicing picking how I always wanted to pick .. it’s a great feeling, it just keeps getting better and better.

Troy Grady's nomenclature has been refined away from the pickslanting concept, though it still gets a lot of buzz on its own. People sure like to discredit the guy for doing some actual science wrt: picking techniques and seeing how the masters actually execute their technique. Even in this video you can see how Johnson switches at higher speeds from this hybrid "from the pickguard up" approach to something more akin to economy picking favoring upstrokes as the vehicle for switching to lower strings. Nothing tangential about it, it's on display here.
