I saw an interview with Matteo, wherein he said his right hand fingerstyle was the result of childhood exposure to classical guitar and when he first picked up an electric guitar he didn't know that most people use a pick. So he simply adapted the classical finger style to the electric. It has obviously worked for him ! He's a fantastic, and highly unique, player !
He mentioned Bill Frisell and Matteo Mancuso. What an honor to them being mentioned by the legendary Eric Johnson.

Mancuso right hand is one thing, that most of today's electric guitarists would find extremely and impossible to do. They would simply have to spend many months if not years, to study flamenco right hand technique. Mancuso brilliance lies, in his musicianship, apart from the left hand as well. But it's his musicianship and comprehension of music as the whole, that makes him so special. I think really, that he possess a great ear, and maybe even perfect pitch. By the ease , with which he challenges and performs those super sofisticated pieces, it points in that direction in my opinion.

Mancuso has set a new standard! A new generation of guitarists are going to be wondering what a pick is! Its wonderful cause you can just pick up a guitar and start playing without having to look for a pick.
@thatsamazin-11 ай бұрын
There are things you can accomplish with a pick that you can’t accomplish without. The pick is a very underrated weapon. For example, watch Max Ostro’s “Ibanez” solo and compare with Matteo on same track. Someone posted a link to it it comment section. Listen to those growls and dynamics Max pulls out of that guitar. Then, watch Max’s “out for blood” solo and pay attention to the face melting alternate picking. It would be impossible for Matteo to do that with his fingers. He could come close and make it sound good, but it wouldn’t be the same. Guys like Max use hybrid picking seamlessly alternating between fingers and a pick. Matteo only using fingers can also be a handicap. Not everyone will love the tone that comes from that. So I see it as a blessing AND a curse. lol

Matteo has developed such an incredible independence in all the fingers of his right hand that he is able to rip through very complicated lines with a level of speed and efficiency that is very difficult to achieve with a pick. I’m guessing he started his guitar journey as a finger style player and along the way was listening to shred players and figured out a better way to do what they were doing.

Mancuso is in a league of his own. I've always been a fan of Eric Johnson too having seen him 3 times live. But the last time I saw him was in a very small theater. Many of us in the audience were so disappointed because he played most of the time with his back towards the audience. One guy even yelled out for him to face the audience. Also, has anyone noticed that Johnson is not totally in sync rhythmically with his drummer and bassist in some of his recent live performances? That was never the case with his early live performances. Possibly, he is not hearing the stage monitors clearly.

I've been an EJ fan since I ripped that first vinyl soundpage of Cliffs out of a guitar rag in the 80s. It's well known, and many cats have mentioned it when asked about Eric, that he tends to often get ahead of the beat. This is nothing new. Listen to Tones and there are examples of this on most of his albums. Then he can just seamlessly get sewn into a tight pocket. He's a generational talent, like Matteo. For me (and to quote EJ when asked about "the best" player out there) "whats better, the color blue or the color red?" Right on point. I love this young fella to bits , especially after Beato's interview, but for me at least, it comes down to composition skills that really really grab me and why despite reading so many peoples comments about "sloppy Jimmy Page" over the decades, any of those perceived imperfections mean nothing to me. His compositions and productions are timeless. I've spun EJ 1000's of times (especially on road trips) and I hope Matteo's compositions will have the same legs for him as they do for these guys.

There is too much idealization about Mancuso, his main tech is strumming with his right hand with all his five fingers in addition of a lot of tapping tech, the strumming tech was used long time before Mancuso by the legendary Lindsey Buckingham, i have listened to Matteo Mancuso debut album and it's good but it's not a masterpiece, most of his playing is a show off of his tech, the one thing the listener won't find in his album is playing with feel and touch in the style of the late Gary Moore, i grew up in the seventies with the late Eddie Van Halen who was the master of the tapping tech, in the eighties with the shred revolution with guitar players like Yngwie Malmsteen, Greg Howe and Tony Macalpine so i'm sorry, but i'm not impressed by the young Mancuso, i've heard what Steve Vai, Rick Beato and Eric Johnson said about young Mancuso and i have a lot of respect for them but after listening to two or three tracks of Mancuso you get the feeling of deja vu, i mean he's a one trick pony, figuratively!!!

The singular way in which Eric referred to Matteo Mancuso is funny... "the Italian player that plays with his fingers".. Eric is an immense musician with magnificent taste but probably on this occasion there was a lack of attention and perhaps even respect in the comparisons of the young Italian musician. For some years now Matteo's talent, not only in terms of technique, has been before the eyes of the musical world which has welcomed, listened to, followed and acclaimed him. Let's be clear, Eric Johnson's words are all in all words of praise but the adjective "versatile" seems extremely reductive, far from the unanimous opinion of countless virtuous and consolidated professionals who have expressed themselves with authentic admiration. I think Johnson also knows he wasn't being too generous and perhaps sincere. 😉

I am italian and proud of Mancuso, but I want to be sincere: I find his technique with his right hand completely unaesthetic. That's far from being inspirational to me. I am basically a rock guitar player but I watch and listen to many genres. And all these guitarists (from John Abercrombie to Max Cavalera) are captivating, with their music, language, licks, styles and aesthetic. The guitars they play, the way they grab the pic, the way they do fingerpicking (look at the way Knopfler keeps his fingers on the strings and pickguard) etc. All this stuff is important too. The right hand of Mancuso is a kind of turnoff for me. That comes from the classical guitar, that in Italy is everywhere... But I've always hated it, preferring instead the acoustic and electric guitar.
