I relate to it so much personally. My home's long gone now (nothing dramatic, we just had to move and there's no way I can go back there anymore. It's home to someone else now.) and I could never find any other place home since. It took me a long time to realize that the one time I felt truly at -home- was with my friends and loved ones. For reference, when ME3 first came out, the ending cutscene stopped at 52:52. We see the the Normandy trying to outrun the energy wave, then the Normandy crash-landed on the planet, with the crew disembarking. That's it. Fade to black. Roll credits. Your final choice ended up being little more than what color the energy wave was that came from the Crucible (red for Destroy, blue for Control, green for Synthesis) and some minor changes to the cutscenes leading up to Normandy escaping. The post-credits scene at 56:54 is still present, however. After all the momentous choices you made in the game, that ending made your choices feel meaningless. And that really pissed off a lot of the fanbase. So, EA released the Extended Cut DLC to add the epilogue sequence from 52:53 to 55:36, which is a bit different between the three choices (different narrators, for example). There are even slight variations for each epilogue sequence, depending on how high your War Asset score was and/or whether you were playing mostly Renegade or Paragon. BTW, even though after the end, the game dumps you back at a point before the final assault on The Illusive Man's base, I believe the last actual autosave point happens just before you take the beam up to the Citadel. If you're curious about the other endings (including Refusal), all you have to do is replay the final 20 minutes or so to try them out. And, again, try to imagine the game ending at 52:52 to get the original ME3 "experience".

To be perfectly honest, I think it's best to move on from that original ME3 "experience". I played the game only recently, and honestly felt quite good about it... only for that feeling to be massively shattered by every single discussion by a fan being dominated by how much they hated the ending. Like... c'mon. ME3 was so much more than that. And though the endings are still not amazing, they improved it as much as they could within what was already there. Being angry about it now isn't gonna change that.

Played it as they came out from 2007 to 2012 and the original ending was not a worthy send off to the trilogy. Glad it was mostly fixed though. Still wish they did an Indoctrination theory alternative ending or something. Would have been neat.

yeah having just recently finsihed playing the only non minor issue id had was the the ending felt really unsatisfying, and than youtubing the other endings (cause last save was before cerburus base) none actually felt like a good one. even before the ending ending, the last act felt like it had a lot of holes in it, what happened with the citidal, we saved it once and upgraded its defences yet they got it no issues without us even knowing? what happened to all the people on it? Bailey? Aria? Council?, kinda felt like a whole mission or whole cutscene was just forgotten about. also the Normandy flying down to pick up the two squadmates felt really weird, reaper was blasting solidars but didn't care a whole ship is there?

I don't often leave long comments, but I had to for this. Eric, thank you so much for this playthrough and huge props to the editor for these highlights. I had to lay my dog to rest yesterday and knew it was coming about two weeks ago. In those two weeks, her and I have been cuddled on the couch and I've only wanted to watch these videos, to be honest. Experiencing this story through your eyes was a real treat and helped me temporarily forget about what was approaching in my life. After I said goodbye to her yesterday, I watched you play the Citadel DLC and then this final mission. I didn't mean for both of these things to fall on the same day, but let's just say it was an emotional journey for me. Thank you for playing both parties of the Citadel DLC. They're so different and both are worth experiencing. I really appreciated how into the lore you were and how in love with the codex you were through this whole playthrough. I never devoted a ton of time to that when I played these games, so I actually learned new things just by watching you go through it all. Thank you for that. I also really admire how much your brain can remember from the previous games. It makes for an enjoyable experience on the viewing side. And finally, I am super impressed at how you managed to get through most fights without using your powers or even medi-gels. For me, the powers are the most fun part of combat. It's like getting to be a Jedi or a mage AND you can also use guns. For my third playthrough, I'm going to be spec'ing Garrus so hard that he can do all the shooting for me and I'm going to attempt a Powers & Melee only run with him as my gun. We'll see how that goes. Finally, it was a treat to see how into the Tali romance you were and how much you cared about so many of the characters. I really appreciated your devotion to the genophage and the Geth. I also appreciate how you really weighed both options a lot of the times with many decisions in this playthrough. Such a treat, thank you. Your playthrough did remind me of both of mine (so far). My first, which happened back in 2019-2020, was a FemShep who romanced Garrus and she was a strong Paragon, but not quite as strong as yours. 😏 My second playthrough in 2022 was another FemShep and she was a very strong Renegade. How you were Paragon in this run was how I was Renegade. And I romanced Garrus in that one too because he actually gets along really well with a Renegade Shep. I appreciate your playthrough for giving me the full MaleShep experience. Mark Meer is great, but now having seen a lot of it, I have to say that for me Jennifer Hale just delivers so much more oomph with her lines, for both Paragon and Renegade. I really hope that you consider being a FemShep for your Renegade run. Playing Renegade gave me so much more appreciation for the Bioware team and its writers and has given me more confidence to play a ruthless personality in other games. I think we always think of Paragon = good and Renegade = bad but it's not even close to being that black and white. Now that I've played both, all future playthroughs will have a really good mix between the two. Some Paragade, some Renegon. 😁 I'm not sure if you will ever see this, but I'm so glad that I chose to watch your playthrough during one of the most difficult times in my life because it made it feel less difficult and I was so glad to have smiled, laughed, cried, been upset, and all the other emotions right with you during this beautiful story. Some other commenters have brought up the Dragon Age trilogy and I am going to add my +1 for that. It's another beautiful experience with more amazing characters and locations and threats and lore and romances. Thank you, thank you! 💙❤

With Destroy, by destroying the Reapers, you are destroying the species they hold within their bodies, and also creating another far later issue with synthetics being made and destroying their creators, and leaving the galaxy to be conquered by Leviathan, since it told you their plans once the Reapers were gone. With Control, you are basically indoctrinating the Reapers, and imprisoning the species they perverted, and leaving the risk of another Cereberus situation later on, where some despot seizes the Reapers. Since organics and synthetics will always run the risk of not understanding each other even in this option, it will be a greater danger. Synthesis seems to be the best of both outcomes. It prevents the threat of synthetics destroying organic life, and the Leviathan threat, by leaving the Reapers around. That still leaves the dangers of stellar disasters threatening the planets, and natural disasters threatening populations, or another threat from another galaxy arriving to threaten the peace. @@justinm4497

Good job choosing Destroy over control. That’s what the goal of the entire trilogy was, and the indoctrinated Illusive man wanted Control, Anderson/Shepard wanted Destroy (literally argued about it with the Illusive man minutes before encountering the Reaper Catalyst) & synthesis is what an indoctrinated Saren wanted. And destroy happens to be the only ending where Shepard lives. I actually picked Synthesis on my first PT and instantly regretted it. Everyone looked creepy and I wouldn’t want that done or forced on me.

Even though the other options might be more alluring due to fewer deaths and sugar-coated presentation, Destroy is the only one that is thematically consistent and seems to make the most sense. Eric summed up perfectly, that if EDI and the Geth had to choose, they'd sacrifice their lives for everyone else, just like Legion did, and I doubt they'd want to force organics to accept something as controversial as Synthesis. Control is just playing God and I doubt Paragon Shepard would trust himself with that much power. I wish Garrus would've made it to the Citadel with Shepard, he'd calibrate the Crucible so good that it would only target the Reapers.

Except the game consistenly pushes you towards the Synthesis ending. "Forcing" it on everyone in the galaxy improves their lives. Choosing Destroy just kills the Geth which nullifies the best Rannoch outcome. The only reason most people choose Destroy is because they want Shepard to stay alive.

Before the Catalyst brings it up nobody ever thought about doing something like this except for Saren (villain, indoctrinated) and Illusive Man (villain, also indoctrinated). The goal in ME1 and ME2 was to stop the invasion, and after that happened, survive (by destroying the Reapers, thus the Crucible). The Synthesis represents the Reaper ideology (organic+synthetic beings, Pinnacle of Evolution as they call themselves). They don't ask organics / synthetics for consent while building more Reapers out of them and assume that there's no way to end the cycle through other means. Shepard proved them wrong by uniting the Geth and the Quarians through diplomacy, thus there should be no need for Reapers or Synthesis anymore. By picking Synthesis, you ignore the peace that you've achieved and basically assume that Reapers were right all along, and there is a need for a final solution to eradicate both organic and synthetic identities (free will) and forcibly merge them into a new alien lifeform.

Destroy ending is the only one that makes sense in my book. It's the ending we as Shepard (whether in Renegade of Paragon form), and by extension all the other characters that have become our allies and characters we befriended have strived for during the entire trilogy. Yes, it is unfortunate that EDI and the Geth have to die as a result of it (and if they actually showed EDI and the Geth's deaths on-screen, it would've probably been a tear-jerker moment), but literally everything in the entire trilogy teaches you that everything comes at a cost, this is no different. The only drawback from the destroy ending is that it kinda invalidates the whole Geth vs Quarian conflict and Rannoch arc retroactively. But I feel like both the Geth and EDI would be glad to know that their deaths weren't in vain. The synthesis and control endings simply aren't built up as valid options enough over the course of Mass Effect 3 or the previous 2 games. The control ending is weird because of Shepard remaining aware of his loved ones' existence, but will never be able to properly interact with them again. It's even weirder that the player isn't given a choice as to what to do with the Reapers now that we have control over them. The synthesis ending is by far the weirdest one and the most out-of-nowhere ass-pull ending. It simply doesn't feel earned that suddenly now out of nowhere we can combine all organic and synthetic life into a completely new framework. And another unearned aspect from a narrative perspective that the control and synthesis endings have in common is the Reapers helping out and rebuilding what they've destroyed. After everything the Reapers have done over the course of the trilogy without a shred of remorse for it, it makes no sense from a narrative perspective for the Reapers to be given any sort of chance to rebuild what they've destroyed, whether it's by being controlled by Shepard, or by doing it themselves in the synthesis ending. To summarize: I'm glad Eric chose the Destroy ending, as it's the only ending that makes sense for this trilogy imo. Also, I hope Eric watches the Gamerpoop Mass Effect videos in tonight's stream, he needs to experience the greatness of the "We'll bang, OK?" meme lol.

Synthesis is what Saren wanted and became in Mass Effect 1. Control we see with the Illusive Man and how you never truly are in control. Destroy is the whole point of the final battle and the reason everyone is fighting by your side.

Ultimately I always felt being able to pick an ending was the wrong way they went about it but they promised it so they were stuck with it. The player agency should have been limited to each character but having a choice over a multitude of endings in a narrative as big as this will always lead to a disappointment. Which is why the Indoctrination Theory is good headcanon. Much like Shepard being a pre-written character you get to steer a bit rather than having a blank slate, the story needed to be handled the same.

For a brief moment i was scared he was going to choose control during the livestream cause that's what The Illusive Man wanted and that's what Eric was against during the Geth mission (and we don't talk about Synthesis (Space Hitler choice) lmfao). But i'm glad he made the Destroy choice by the end! This was such a good ride! His reaction to Shepard breathing at the end was SO GOOD lmao

Of the many times I’ve played these games I could never bring myself to choose the destroyed ending, like No matter what I’ve seen people say it always just seem like the worst ending to me at least the way I play the game, oh well everyone can play how they want lol, yours was still one of my favorite Playthroughs of the game I’ve seen on KZbin, fun to see your reactions through it all, thanks

Neat little detail. If you don't have enough war assets for the perfect destroy ending obviously Shepard dies and your romantic interest puts your name on memorial but you had enough so Tali refused to put name up. I always interpreted that as refusing to give up hope that he survived but yea the little detail of putting Sheps name up or not depending on if he died or not is interesting choice

Always think it’s funny that Eric was considering Control considering how adamant he was about being against it with the Illusive Man. I guess that’s the point though; Shepard choosing to control the reapers is very hypocritical after fighting TIM the whole game because he wants to control them.

To me synthesis is the best ending possible. I chose it because some day in our distant future we will succeed in creating synthetic life and we must learn to live alongside it, to gain full understanding of it and allow it to gain understanding of us and all other forms of organic life. Its about finding balance in a new way, just like in every other type of new encounter we have had throughout history. destruction is never a good solution because we don't have infinite resources, and control is also not good because we dont like when we are ruled by all powerful tyrants, even benevolent ones...

I believe in the Synthesis route too. Don't know how it will happen in the future but I'm sure we'll find a way. More conflict may arise but that's what makes us as free will species. Another thing that convinced me to do the Synthesis route was that the Geth were given a chance and then we're just going to destroy them! EDI as well! I couldn't decide on that. Control is a no-go. Don't like Control. Howvere, like Eric said, if we could talk to the Geth and EDI one last time then they could've been a deciding factor. Next time i play ME, I'll just install a mod that removes these choices in the end cuz it breaks me emotionally everytime hahaha.

I never bought what the intelligence actually tells you, figured it was a manipulation to try to get you to choose synthesis or control, (which Saren and the Illusive man chose when they were indoctrinated). So I'm not convinced that EDI and the Geth did actually die, you don't see the bodies... Also from the Mass Effect 4 teasers it looks like Destroy was the canonical ending.

EDI's name appears on the memorial wall. And I don't understand how the geth- a 100% synthetic race- could have survived the destruction of all synthetics in the galaxy, it just makes absolutely no sense. I do still think destroy is the best though

Actually, for me, the game could have ended with Anderson and Shepard dying together, overlooking their triumph over the Reapers. Cutscene to the Catalyst frying the bastards, then explain the companions' fate, closing statement by Hackett, and curtain. None of that star child business. But hey, still an amazing epic, one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Think I'll replay it again...

A lot of people were unhappy with these choices. It felt like a lot of what you did meant nothing All that work to help EDI & the Geth be free thinking independent machines, undone by the Destroy option. Control can work, because you can use the Reapers to rebuild what was lost. But they are enslaved as the Geth once were, bound forever to your will and you are never free. Synthesis is what I did, because it's in a way the happiest ending. EDI & the Geth live and everyone becomes partly synthetic and then the Reapers go away presumably never to return.

I can’t say how much I love this trilogy. I’ve played it in every way conceivable as both Femshep and Broshep. Sure the ending may have gotten a little janky, but I don’t care I still rank it amongst the best that sci-fi has offered. Also I’m pretty sure Liara “embraces eternity” with you so that at the very least some form of Shepard survives

I'm definitely one of those people who really like Mass Effect 3 despite its flaws, especially the ending. It really bugs me that the developers sabotaged the destroy ending by adding the BS to destroy EDI and the Geth as it is very clear it was the ending the whole trilogy was building towards but they had to ruin it to at least justify the other two endings.

Among the four available endings it is impossible to determine which is the best. The only certain thing is what the true function of the Crucible was, that is the synthesis between organic and synthetic life. The Destruction consists in shooting at a part of the Crucible and this does not make sense, because thinking that a device resulting from an advanced alien technology works by shooting at it is like thinking that a sophisticated supercomputer starts up by hammering it. The Control is a partially correct use of the Crucible, because only the thoughts and memories of the user are exploited, but the molecular structure of the user remains unused. In short, the correct functioning of the Crucible consists in exploiting both the mental and molecular essence of the user.

Yeah the sad thing is that with both Kasumi and Javik, telling them that they should live with their traumatic memories rather than helping them to let go of the past kinda leads to them having bad endings. The moral of the story is to move on from the death of your friends in order to build a better life.
