My swing philosophies are based on just watching the best players for a long period of time. When I first started analyzing swings I would do the old draw the circle around their head from face on and see where they would go relative to that circle. If you go back and watch great players throughout time, certainly some guys stay right in that circle. Some guys move off the circle a little bit more. I prefer a swing model where if you draw the circle around their head they remain relatively stable or a centered pivot.
You have to realize that when you're watching video, you see things two dimensionally. In reality, the movement pattern is three-dimensional. Andy Plumber and Mike Bennett from Stack and Tilt really popularized some of the terms and the three dimensional movements during the backswing. When you make a backswing in reality you turn to the right, there's some amount of rotation, you are tilting to the left, and then you are extending.
If you start normal - or centered at set up - and you make a movement to the right or your head moves outside of that “circle,” you are bent over too much from the top as you turn. You don't have enough of the extension piece and typically not enough side bend. When you move off the ball, it’s typically forward flex. And a lot of times you guys and gals will pair that up with a very flat shoulder turn. The forward flexion is the part we have to get rid of.
One of the best drills that I have seen is to put a club across your shoulders. If I were to take my normal setup and I put the club across my shoulders when I make a backswing, I want to have the club point basically on the ball target line. This is more so for the left side bend part than the movement, but you'll start to feel how that side bend goes in with your extension.
Maybe the best drill I've ever seen for keeping a steady head and eliminating the movement off the ball came from George Gankas. The sun's got to be out for this shadow drill to work. Stand so the sun casts your shadow in front of you. Take a normal setup. You put a golf ball just below top of your head in the shadow. I put it right in the middle, meaning there's an equal distance of the shadow to the left and an equal distance to the right. Now, when I make a pivot and I go up to the top, I want to keep that ball basically in the same spot as I go. So for me, that's right in the middle. But for you, you might feel a drastic difference. You definitely can’t B.S. this drill.
Now, let’s go over some feels you can use. There is no right or wrong feel. Whatever produces the movement for you - If it produces what we want, then that's good. If you're someone who moves off the ball too much, the first thing that I would tell you to feel is more chest towards the sky. Some people like to feel a little bit more of a right shoulder, up and back. So, if I move off the ball, my right shoulder doesn't really. If I stay more centered, I can feel my right shoulder going up and behind me right off the bat. There's no movement to the right. Right shoulder goes up and back for me. I feel the chest go up towards the sky no matter what I do, so that's my main feel, but right shoulder, up and back as a secondary way to do this.
If you move off the ball, typically your left shoulder is traveling to the right too much and usually too flat when you go back. So my right shoulder goes up and back. My left shoulder goes down and forward. But I'm saying if you move off the ball, you probably have too much of the forward motion, so you want to have a sensation to add the left side. Then like your left shoulder's going almost down more down towards your left shoe.

The ‘chest to sky’ feel has really helped me to find a repeatable and more centred swing. Spent (wasted?) so much time on other drills from other online coaches-this one is fundamentally and positively effective-with added bonus of immediate feedback leading to consistency! This has revolutionised my swing and allowed enjoyment to once again return to my game!

Eric...I have had lateral movement problems for more than 70 years...even when I was low single figures. Starting to play again after lock-down I've been struggling again and looking on line for a solution. Your explanation of the mechanics of the problem is by far the most lucid and helpful that I've found...particularly the 3-dimensional element. Thanks for an excellent insight. Percy.

I had already started working on this when I found this video. My thought was to keep my right shoulder inside my right foot throughout the backswing. If you move off the ball the first thing to happen is that right shoulder goes outside and around that right foot. I look forward to trying the shadow drill. Thanks!

Great instruction Eric. I feel many of your vids are aimed at better players or people who are nerdy about the inner workings of technique and fundamentals of the swing. As a low handicapper all my life (5 and below), almost 50 years of golf, I find them really helpful and your style is nice to work with. I like these long vids (12 mins) as they keep me company on the drive home from work. Keep it up.

Hi Eric. Just went out side and did the shadow drill. I found I indeed moved right off the ball. Used the combination of extension of the thoracic spine, using the thought 'keep bent but chest higher' and left shoulder to the left foot and that worked great to keep me centered. So once again, a video with with great tips. Good job! Love it. Thanks for all you do for us amateurs struggling with the golf swing.

I’ve been off from school so I’ve had quite a lot of time to play golf and, I will tell you that your videos alone have taken 10 strokes off my game in two weeks. I have been trained to do this wrong. As a 16 year old my PGA pro used to give me such a hard time about not getting behind the ball(letting my head move backwards) in the backswing. I always disagreed with him, but thought I must be missing something. I’m 37 now and I’ve finally realized that staying centered is the key to consistency. I went to look for videos of anyone who might think the same as me, and that led me here. Eric Cogorno might be the best teacher in golf.

Great video. I’m finding with a longer backswing and staying more centred , has got me my power back. Although my weight does feel more on the inside of my left foot, having said this, I feel very coiled and feel confident rotating through. Unfortunately Eric , I live in England, so the shadow drill is often a no no . Keep up the great videos. Best wishes Gary.

Hey Eric, this is another awesome insight... I first started watching your videos 2-3 months ago, i had all the old favourite swing faults crossed at the top from cupped left wrist (your video on wrist condition solved this for how I understand things and learn), early extension lack of rotation (was a combination of 4 or 5 lesson videos and instruction videos that solved this for the most part) I realised that this video was the final missing piece getting rid of the last little bit of EE, I had a bit of trouble with the first couple of shots ( I was moving right and left to recover and not moving right and staying centred still felt the compulsion to move left which put me way ahead of the ball and stuck through impact) added the left shoulder feeling like it’s pulled up and behind me and wouldn’t u know it ...... open through impact and more than ever before. All I can say is thanks for all the information you give in a way I can understand it. I am from Australia your videos have changed golf for me 12.7 - 8.1 in a little under 3 months cheers man appreciate it all soo much Ps pre ordered your website 👍

The chest pointing to the sky drill creates so many good things in the swing. It produces more power, better turn, puts you on a more upright swing plane if it’s too flat which has been my crutch for years. The only thing that you would probably have to be aware of with the left shoulder pointing down is a reverse “C” on the follow through if you keep your weight on your right side too much. Shadow drill is genius. As usual, great videos Eric.

Today I worked on this on the practice ground before teeing off at Lo Romero, Murcia, Spain. During the comp I hit one fat shot that caused a double bogey. I hit three other loose shots but oh my gosh everything else was so good. I did feel like I was stack and tilting but I played to my 10 handicap for the first time in over a year. Feel v real , my playing partners said it was the best they have seen me swing

I've always struggled with the tilt..when I do my backswing right, it really feels like I'm barely moving...that extension piece really really helped...I always tend to move off the ball and I don't get why...this is great

Eric, this is exactly what I do in my swing. Too much lateral movement leading to inconsistent ball striking. These two drills are perfect and can be done at home during the winter. I have always lifted my left heel in the backswing, so I need to practice not doing that because I don't see you doing that.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hope it helps, James! I would say its OK to lift the left heel....so long as you stay relatively centered! Plant it back down to start downswing if you do

I am guilty of trying maintain spine angle in the back swing, thus making me move right of centre making transition impossible. I am an avid watcher of your channel, time and time I have heard you say if there is a problem in the down swing its probably as a result of the back swing. Looks like your right again Cogorno! Thanks Eric.

Ive seen where you mention opposites in golf with past videos. (For example, Upright backswing equals a more shallow delivery) But my question is, will a slight lateral movement to the right during the backswing provide a more ideal impact position? For example Henrik Stenson. Thanks hope that made sense.

Not necessarily...too many other variables involved...weight shift or not doesn't guarantee anything . I do like a pressure shift into the right foot while keeping body mostly centered

I watched the video and gave a very hardy and stupefied laugh at 3:27 to 3:42 because trying other movements never got me to FEEL them correctly. YES, I must extend my spine to keep my head centered during my rotation. Bro, been struggling 15 years and wasted all that time slaughtering the sod. I can understand what you and GG speak of. Oh, and GG is the MAN!!!!!

I like the video. There is one thing that I think might go wrong while doing the steady head drill and that is moving the right hip away from the target. You got this down pretty good and internally rotate at the right hip socket causing it to slightly move towards the target.

So far this works great for irons. With driver, it's hard to do when I address the ball with a lean to the right. I'll keep working on that. With the irons, the contact is amazing.

Great Video - For the ball and shadow drill is it possible to use it for the transition? If so could you allow the head to move down, relative to the ball, to accommodate more forward bend and/or back a little to allow some side bend? Say if you were rehearsing this in slow motion? Thanks for the explanation - As always a great breakdown of the movement detail in a way that allows me improve right away.

G.Gankas adds also 2 balls at the hips level on the shadow (one on each side) to check that the hips also stay centered. It is no good to keep the head centered and let the hips moving away from the target for instance. It will help to have the complete feeling and not introduce a fault to succeed in keeping the head centered. Uh, at least, I think so... ;)

Great video. I am one who has constantly struggled with moving off the ball. As you mentioned my right side feels very passive and my right shoulder does not have a feeling off going up and behind me. I tend to collapse my right arm and get flat and restricted with the arms. I can make the move to stay centered without a club doing the drills you suggest but when I try to do it with a club, it is difficult in terms of my spatial awareness of the club/arms/hands. Could you offer a feeling of where the arms, hands and club should feel in space relative to the body as one tries to stay centered?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely...everyone can do it easier without the ball...always more difficult when the ball is there. I can't really offer a stock FEEL for what the arms should do...that is too dependent per person..If you're arms get too far behind you (deep) like you say you would need to feel them going more vertical...left arm more up, not in...left arm off chest
