Not sure if anyone will see this comment as this video is 3 years old now, but this improved my driving distance by 30+ yards. AND more consistent distance too. I will say that I had a bit of a slice, but I was able to correct that a bit by swinging the club slightly towards the right with a slightly stronger grip. But, my drives were not getting past 220 yards. I watched this video and it was basically a lightbulb moment. I did some practice swings with my old swings and then more with a slight flick of the arms (throwing motion) and the pitch of the swing path went slightly higher pitched. My first shot was a MASSIVE slice but it went 230+ YARDS. My slices typically averaged 190-200 yards. Did some more practice swings and now I can consistently hit 250+ yard drives. Not perfectly straight, but no more massive hooks or slices and I can safely say I am no longer afraid of the driver…unless the hole has a forest on each side with 50 yards of width 😂

Good stuff EC as always, thanks. Another thought that I got from Ballard many years ago: pressure the clubhead against the shaft from the top of the swing all the way to the finish. In a sense, it forces you to FEEL as if you are throwing the clubhead away by trying to put bend into the shaft, yet that produces the great lag that I have found. Another visual is to take the pin out of a hole on the course, move in a circle holding the pin horizontally and try to make the flag at the end go as fast as possible.

This is a gem from 3yrs ago I reckon. My feel which has really helped is to feel the arms shoulders and body are all in the same position until after impact. All I am doing is rotating, relationship of everythign stays the same and doesn't move...i.e the actual swing only feels like it is happening on the downswing very late after turning through. Different from trying to keep the wrists bent for a late release which never worked for me (and many others)

Great explanation. The best players maintain the right wrist angle and while the corkscrew is unwinding the lever isn't being unhinged until the last second. They have to be turning / rotating while actively straightening the right arm, like snapping a towel, THEN the right hand not the hands with a passive arm. So it's a chain reaction. What's tricky with pictures is you can't see the muscle contraction order. It's the "hit" instinct too, ....you know you have this club head out there and it's what hits the ball so the overwhelming tendency is to "unleash the power" but in most people that's too soon and out of sequence. Doing this one part of the swing requires understanding of leverage and the whole cracking the whip so to speak with the right arm. For some reason that's not an intuitive move.

This video is really helpful. I wish Eric, Mike M, Milo, or any of the Brit instructors were somewhere near me. The lessons from the local pros around me really suck because they don’t seem to want to explain things and just give drills. I’m all for drills and practice but they’re discouraging when they don’t work. Anyway, I’ve got the wide part down pat, but I didn’t really get the fold part. This resulted in very little depth, and me being very disconnected at the top of backswing. So I’d get stuck, etc., etc… Thanks for sharing (and sorry for the rant)!

Good vid Eric. I'd add that if you are left handed and play right (there's quite a few of us), practice throwing a side arm pitch motion. Don't go crazy, just easy toss as you just trying to get the positions and feel down. Helped me a bunch when I figured this out.

Eric, another great video and advice. You mentioned Steve Pratt, who advocates throwing from the top, as early as possible, whilst you advise not to throw too early. Most good players seem to turn on the power from club parallel, not before, as you do. Although, when I watch Steve he does not appear to throw from the top, he still has lag at club parallel, much like Kyle Berkshire, so maybe he suffers from feel versus real. Should we follow your advice, or Steve’s?

Eric, at the beginning of the video you demonstrate the ‘throw’ of the club. I have always attributed speed of the throw in correlation with the shoulder turn. I did not initially see or hear any mention of the shoulder turn as a contributing factor for club head speed; am I missing something or does shoulder turn influence club head speed? Your presentations and clarity have been very beneficial to the development of my golf swing.

People question the throwing the club from the top but by the time you think about creating the width between your elbow and shoulder from the top it will probably show up on camera at left arm parallel in downswing. You have to create that width early because if you try to hold it until left arm parallel it's too late: you don't have the reflexes to change anything at that point.

Reviewing this video it appears the throw is at a point of being in front of the body as the body turns thru the hitting zone. The more turn after the ball strike, the later the arms are thrown. Also, the bending of the right arm is timed with the shoulder turn. The right arm bend is relative to the right shoulder as the right arm approaches the right shoulder. As the distance between the right arm and right shoulder get closer the right arm must bend. Keeping the right arm “straight” as long as possible assists in getting the right shoulder back for a full turn.

Hey Eric, I watched your video about keeping your lead AND trail arms connected to your torso (using a towel or golf glove tucked under to check). I feel like I’m not coming over the top as much with this left arm connected feel. This video has the trail arm DISCONNECTED from the torso through most of the swing. Is the connected thing just a feel to keep the elbow where we want it?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff! Great questions. There are several milo details involved here. The "connected" drills and feels are A BIT EXAGGERATED. The trail arm will have some shoulder flexion (arm lift) during the backswing....the elbow getting farther from ribcage. Then there is some shoulder extension (arm down) in downswing combined with external rotation of the shoulder and adduction of the arm..... I think this video will help answer some of your questions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eandh3yjbbV8pKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6O7mI1-fN55eLM

I would want the club to be fully released just at the ball rather than past it, at least with driver. Not that I'm right, just what I like to feel. I was an avid baseball player before I played a lot of golf and that extension at impact and staying behind the ball always made the most sense to me. Curious what you think?

I struggled the last 2 years with terrible drive slices. Tried so many things and could never consistently hit drives. I saw this method in another video recently and it fixed my driver in a single range session. May be that easy for some....not for others. Many people currently swing too far outside in or too far inside out So if you feel right down the line that may not correct the issue You generally need to exaggerate the opposite of your current swing direction issue

@@CogornoGolf thx for the reply. I was having problems with slicing.. I fund that if I "threw" the club more to the right it solved the slice. I know that if u throw the club, the first time u will most likely send it way left( right handed golfer). Also when u throw something u need a target, and it cant be the ball anymore ( the ground is in the way ). We can all learn to throw the club... I learned fast cause l used to throw things when i was a kid. My mom on they other hand os having some problems... shes been playing golf 15 years, but shes been taught wrong... shes too focused on not missing the ball, doing something wrong... I believe that anyone that can throw the club in a straight line, can play golf.. well thats my 2 cents. Thx for the videos.. stay safe mate

Hey Bruce! The video never lies :) What we need to FEEL is the key question, and that depends on what the golfer currently is doing. You can test every feel and video it and actually SEE what creates the correct motions for you based on the checkpoints.

Hey F D! I do not personally feel that either hand is dominant. There is no correct answer here as FEELs are subjective. 2 players swings could be the exact same and one would feel RIGHT and one LEFT. I honestly think amongst good player it would be about 50/50

@drewitgolf
@drewitgolf 3 жыл бұрын
The straightening of the right arm in the downswing can be looked at as either a motion or an action. If a centrifugal reaction straightens it, it is a motion or a passive straightening. If you actively straighten it by muscular force through the right tricep, it can be seen as an action. The first is more of a swinging motion, the second is more of a hitting motion.

@@drewitgolf In your opinion which method is more powerful?
@drewitgolf
@drewitgolf 3 жыл бұрын
@@chixson4159 both are powerful. It depends on your body type and how much thought you want to put into your motion, as well as what works best for you. Hitters like control and want to be the captain of their own ship, swingers just let it go, but have to manipulate CF effectively. Try both and experiment. That’s the fun part.

David Knighton, a near tour quality pro at Southern Woods in Homosassa, Florida is an advocate of hitting with the right arm. David claims to have tried everything. But while David's swing looks very easy he told me personally that he is actually hitting very hard near impact with his right arm. And David can prove it. He can drive the ball about 275 with his right hand only on the club. Absolutely amazing. David once "hit" a long par 5 there with his left broken arm in a cast hanging in a sling on his chest. He missed the putt for eagle. David say's that if standing next to a golf cart on a mock swing, pretend you are going to knock the backrest right off the cart with your right arm as you come into the impact (main seat) area. David came close to making the U.S. Open in a qualifier final at Bay Hill. I followed him around that day for 36 holes.

@CadPro Nothing weird, he was just my local pro and a hell of a player. I worked out on the range a lot and he was open about helping one without money being an object. You could not fool David in the swing. He had an eye for things. The members took up a collection every year and sent him to "tour school". His main problem was his caddie. He needed a tour caddie rather than his brother-in-law who was too negative. Our bag boy there was "on the bag" when Shaun Micheel won the PGA in 2003. Our owner owned "World Woods too and allowed tour players to practice over at our place. I had lots of top talent exposure just by striking up a conversation with them. They essentially taught me "the modern golf swing" which dramatically improved my game. I never could use David's right hand method. It requires a lot of strength. Davis was a big guy.
