The museum scene where Cameron stares at the painting is such a pivotal scene into the mind of Cameron. In that moment, he struggles internally with fear of his parents, fear of the future, fear of just about everything he's afraid of. Staring at the poor child in the painting (it's himself in HIS eyes) screaming is his mind screaming out because he's unhappy and scared for the future. At least this is all my take on it. To me, it's an incredibly powerful scene, and one of my favorites from the 80s.

*Ferris Bueller's Day Off captured the very core of Generation X. The part where Cameron and Sloan are wondering about their future and their desire to do absolutely nothing in life, is what that Gen X was saying at the time.* That sentiment was satirized in *Heathers* and then allowed to play out in *Clerks*.

Though she is pretty much gone from the movie after Rooney leaves school, I love Edie McClurg (Grace) in this. She's such a delight! All her little background bits are so funny, especially pulling things out of her big hair and sniffing the white-out 🤣🤣🤣

Reading the trivia on this movie will instantly confer GenXer status upon you. As many of us could tell you, Cameron's teacher was famed economist Ben Stein, who had a game show where he put his own money up against regular people, answering the same questions they were given in a Jeopardy sort of setup. And as anyone from the Chicago area who knows improv can tell you, Sloan's teacher was Del Close, the Godfather of long-form improv, and he established ImprovOlympic, probably the #1 training ground in the country for improvisors. He trained John Belushi and Chris Farley and many, MANY others. Bill Murray arranged the man's living wake.

Not sure if you guys have ever watched any Wes Anderson films, but he has a very very recognizable style to his directorial style. Wes would have been 17 years old when this movie came out. Obviously I can't say for sure, but the shot at 19:21 has always seemed like the perfect archetype for so much of Wes Anderson's style and so many of his shots. From the way the three are staged in the frame, the fancy quirkiness of the restaurants door, to the dialogue like "we're pinched for sure", and the berette the Ferris suddenly dons - it all just screams of Wes Anderson to me. So I feel like John Hughes and this film must have been a big influence on him. Also, on a side note, I don't know if you guys have seen Risky Business yet. But the house from that film is basically just around the corner from the house they used for Cameron's house in this. Cameron's house was on Beech St in Highland Park, and Tom Cruise's house in Risky Business was like .2 mile away on Linden.

@williamjones6031

1. Alan Ruck was 29 when filming. 2. Charlie Sheen didn't sleep for 48 hours prior to his scene. 3. It's unfair the clueless people like his parents make so much money. Especially his dad. 4. Grace the secretary pretending to be Ed Rooney during the phone call from Cameron was improvised. 5. Not pealing out in front of Rooney would have stopped him from going after Ferris. 6. I watched MTV when they still played videos. 7. This was John Hughes' ode to his hometown of Chicago.😇 John Hughes. 8. I'm not in line to be his "best friend" because I wouldn't let him walk all over and/or Bull$hit me. 9. GOOF: It's awfully late in the day to have a full bus load of kids. 10. That same school was also used for "Uncle Buck" and "The Breakfast Club".

11:30 -- this is how I watch this, now...... I look at Ferris' apparently genuine remorse here and decide that, at THIS moment, Ferris is deciding that his day off will be spent giving his friend a nice day of freedom and leisure. At this moment, he decides what his previously aimless day off is *really* going to be about.

The economics teacher was Ben Stein. He was famous for his monotone voice, but Mr Stein was a real life financial wizard and wealth management planner. Definitely someone you would take financial advice from. He was also in Planes, Trains and Automobiles (another John Hughes film), and the Clear Eyes commercials... "wow".... RIP Ben Stein. Ferrari Fun Fact: That wasn't a 250 GT California. It was, in fact, a 250 Nardo Spyder. But John Hughes thought GT California sounded better.

One of the themes of the movie is that the people who were focused on the minutiae and other people's business were miserable. Ferris saw the big picture and enjoyed life. The symbolism was echoed in the museum. The 3 had different perspectives on the picture. Cameron who was completely miserable, couldn't even see the entire portrait because he was sooo focused on each spec of paint in the picture. And in the entire movie they kept missing something (Ferris having a good time) because they were caught up in their own small little internal world.

Google listing finds that that car is likely worth somewhere between 13 & 17 Million dollars today depending on the condition (assuming it's the original car, not the replica that was destroyed)(Note: Google listing is hard to verify if they are referring to that car/model or something similar). Even in after the car was wrecked, it's likely still worth millions. Cameron's Day Off? Who's Cameron? Nobody would care (in the movie). Gotta be Ferris. I think Ferris will be a game show host or host nighttime talk shows like SNL or The Tonight Show. Just some personality that doesn't do much other than talk a lot. He's a bit too lazy for an acting job or having to do real work. I could be wrong.
