The best game of necromunda I've seen wasnt even with my gang. During a campaign the chaos player took prisoner 1 escher champion and 1 goliath champion in quick succession. We then set a mission where both champions had killed the torturer and had to escape the stronghold starting only with a fighting knife each. We had ducts only the Escher player could crawl through, house rules for distractions and lots of throat slitting. It ended with the goliath player dragging a seriously injured Escher player to the exit before sacrificing himself to let her escape. Amazing moment which later in the campaign resulted in the Escher player and goliath player running an assassination attempt on the chaos player. Brilliant

When it came out in the 90s it continually outsold 40k due to its appeal to the older gamers, however was slowly phased out due to the very low additional sales, basically once you’d bought your gang you were done. I think the best thing necromunda does is show that GW can actually make games with high quality rulesets. Also, if you’re bitter, it massively highlights how dreadful elements of the 40k rules are.

@jessmontgomery34543 жыл бұрын
On the point of one gang and done i think they clearly realised with the constant splat book releases with added a lot of extra options in each and regular releases that are added in later books(which you should buy e.g book of the outcast, which i picked up today😃 awesome btw) which any gang can make use of. New hangers on, brutes hired guns or campaign rules. A good example is the psychic stuff in the book of the outcast that adds real value to genestealer cult, helot cults, delaque and well as anyone can ally to psi-syndica its useful to everyone who fancies having a physic in there gang. Every gang book has new hangers on or hired guns sure some are less universally useful but all have something for general use. Rare we get to say it but GW has pretty much perfectly relaunched Necromunda(there awful sort of 2nd ed is so striking in comparison) and although they were clearly tentatively testing the water at launch i think they're all in now and we will see lots of wonderful releases for years to come.

thanks for the reminder that necromunda exists i've been meaning to try it. i wish there was a way to use the necromunda range with 40k/vice versa. i get that a lot of them wouldnt make sense narratively but having more thematic options like inquisitors, cultists and guard as playable options would be so cool. really glad they added gsc though.
@EricsHobbyWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
I use my cawdor as cultists for my night lords, and if i ever needed more cultists i would happily dip into the other gangs. I am thinking about building GSC army after dipping my toe with a GSC necromunda gang. Corpse grinders would make perfect khorne cultists. I use orlocks as catachans in my guard army, and the old guard codexes are full of Necromunda models. The tie ins are there! Thank you so much, what a kind comment. I get flak sometimes for my builds being painted in fairly muted and samey colours, but now you see why! So the minis can shine and stand out! I think a lot about composition and silhouette and playability too, so i love that you noticed these things. I am always trying to improve my photography as well….this video was the first appearance of my new gimbal which should help get some more interesting smooth shots. I will keep at it!
@AVspectre3 жыл бұрын
I think the building and techniques are the key. If people want a different colour scheme, they can make their own and paint it however they want! I am wanting to try building some terrain that could be used for Necromunda, but I don’t know all the rules so I don’t know what aspects to keep in mind to optimize playability. You touched on a few key aspects here: fall risk near edges, importance of line of site… One video idea could be specifically be increasing the playability of your terrain for a specific game like Necromunda. Things to keep in mind or include. It could be a great way to have terrain crafters dip there toe in and start with designing a few pieces as they learn more about the lore/setting/game.

I have to agree that Necromunda is top tier. I actually started into commission work when a guy asked me to paint up his new gang 20+ years ago. The models are nice and the modularity is great. Mordheim needs the same reboot treatment that GW gave to Necromunda.

Thank you very much for your videos! You and Tim Eagling (Magrathea Builder of Worlds) inspired me a lot regarding my own planned 3x4 Necromunda table. I plan it to be swamp-themed and modular (30x30cm and 30x15cm pieces) with a harbor area on the right (1x3) consisting of a Palanite Enforcer precinct on 1-1 (the front right piece - 30x30), an industrial area with a crane to unload boats on 1-2 (30x30) and some gambling/pit fight filth in the back on 1-3 (30x30). Along the entire backside (tiles 1 to 4 at the back) there is supposed to be a 30cm high wall that accomodates the gambling/betting complex starting on the right on 1-3, vertical shanty structures along the wall from 2-3 to 3-3 and a waterfall from a pipe coming out of the wall somewhere in 2-3 or 3-3 into the swamp area that ends at the bottom of the wall (two 30x15cm wall modules with some swamp - so they actually should be designated "2-4 and 3-4" since I would need two 30x30 and two 30x15 pieces to make up the middle part of the board). 4-3 then would be a 30x30cm Cawdor module with a trash pile growing out of the swamp, leaning against the backwall and a structure above it, also affixed to the wall as well as standing on the trash pile. I'm not entirely sure yet whether to add a ledge towards the bottom of the wall, just above the water level to provide a walkway along the wall or to rather use that space to add more shanty houses (since I would have to leave enough space above the ledge to be able to walk underneath the shanty houses that would take away quite some available space for houses). The walkway also wouldn't provide any cover, so it might be better to just let the gangers use the shanty structure to move along the wall. Then at the of the board, in front of the Cawdor trash pile, I probably would add a 30x15 water tile to add room for boats to mavouver next to the trash pile. So this would be "4-3" (30x15 - 30x30 - 30x15 - 30x30 - the trash pile). 4-2 would be the center piece in the form of a massive 30x30 shanty sturcture along a vertical concrete column that grows out of the swamp, 60cm high (two 30cm high modules put on top of each other). With some removable connection (maybe a rope bridge) to the Cawdor trash pile structure. Along the front (4-1 to 2-1) I might add three 30x15 tiles with a "breakwater" to provide a walkway along the front of the board, with a floodgate on 2-1 (closed to provide a walkway to the breakwater). In the middle section (2-2, 2-3, 3-2 and 3-3) would be mainly swamp water. Probably with some small islands/structures but enough space for boats to manouver in between. I also plan to add a few boats. A Promethium hauler that would add a priced mission goal, a scrap-collector, a boat for the Palanites, as well as at least two smaller boats for gangers to move on the water. Maybe a trawler. I also plan to make at least some of the pieces modular enough to cover the swamp with a "concrete layer" to use them on "dry" boards, Namely the harbor pieces (the three pieces - 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3 would end at the quay wall so that no water needs to be covered up anyways. But the 30x15 shanty-wall pieces 2-4 and 3-4 and the high shanty structure (the 60cm one) of course got water portions that would have to be covered up. It obviously doesn't make a lot of sense to try to cover up the trash pile piece or the swamp pieces in the middle. Hope the description wasn't too confusing lol. Of course the whole reason for the modularity is storing. Hence also no single module should be higher then 30cm...or larger than 30x30. Oh and I might expand the whole thing to 4x4 ;-)...then however it might get hard to reach over to the stuff on the wall in the back... It however will take some time to start the project, since I'm currently busy building two Adeptus Titanicus armies (Ignatum and Mortis) in parallel (20 Titans and 28 knights atm...but there probably will be more). I also plan to get a laser engraver/cutter and an MDF printer, before starting the Necromunda project...(I also need to print some Adeptus Titanicus terrain ;-) ).

Excellent video. While the primary reason I got into you channel was obviously the terrain, I really dug this one. I have never even considered playing Necromunda (atmosphere is great, but don't like the mini's), you've completely changed my mind on that front. The whole reason I got into this hobby was I really liked the space marine design, and loved painting minis- but trying to wrap my head around the encyclopedic amount of knowledge it seemed required just to play a game of 40k (30k, at the time), coupled with the insane up-front cost, kept me happily painting the figures. This actually sounds fun, and not entirely cost-prohibitive. If the whole idea behind this video was to get more people interested in Necromunda, than you've at least succeeded in piquing my interest. So, Anna, if you're reading this- give it a go. I had ZERO interest in it as a game, and now I'm headed over to amazon to see what it'll cost to get me and a board game buddy into this. Mission accomplished- and enjoy your weekend.

Jesus, that board you've got from all the awesome vertical builds is awesome. It's exactly the type of game I want though I'm struggling to figure out how I'll store it... I'm honestly not decided between old or new Necromunda though. I think I'm going to have a centrepiece of a large industrial complex that has a shanty town built on it and then I've backed a KS with stackable resin corrugated huts and also for a more desert/ashlands feel. I'll also use my WWII desert adobe buildings. So i just have to make the centrepiece :D

*Loved* seeing all your previous Necromunda builds together as a full table and getting some actual play time! It all looks so awesome! I hope it all gets much more action in the future! Good luck getting the wife into it; if she's the type who's inclined to this sort of game, she'll love it. Sadly, my wife does not enjoy games as complex as Necromunda-type wargames. 😥 If you do manage to pull her into it, I'd love to see some future videos of a battle-reprt nature, either as a "how to play," and/or just playing whole games through on the terrain pieces you've built on the channel! Good stuff!

Fortuitous timing! Grabbed a copy of ye olde, updated community edition rules from yaktribe and been looking them over, picked up a pile of decent cardboard from work to start making simple terrain/buildings.

Do it, Anna! I would love to see a beginner report! This video makes me a bit sad, because I had a large collection of Necromunda, but never got to play. Then, due to the lockdowns, I had to sell my stuff. So please, Anna, let me live vicariously through you as you try out Necromunda!

This got me genuinely excited to consider trying out Necromunda…I love that it can be relatively quick paced around 60 min. I bet you I could get some folks interested to play at my local gaming store for sure. PS Anna, please play and kick Eric’s ass, it will be pretty sweet when he has to do a battle report and share that with everyone. 😂

Hi Eric, just subbed and liking the vids, thought i'd mention a bit of trivia, Necromunda is actually based on a game called Confrontation which was released serialized over a few issues of White Dwarf sometime late 80's i guess, I'll dig around and see if i can find the original rules, I remember me and my brother had so much fun making sprawling pipelines and random terrain from toilet roll tubes and whatever else was laying around. The gang creation aspect was kinda fun too as you had to randomly generate your kit and stuff including how much ammo you had, good times for sure! I only played a couple of games of Necromunda when it first got released and never actually finished painting a gang but who knows, that may change in the future!

Necromunda is my first tabletop game. I always wanted to try this sort of thing, but first of all it seemed to expensive for me, and I did not know anybody that played. This year I got invited to a campaign, all I had to buy was my gang and dice. But this is a slippery slope, because I'm already buying lots of terrains and accessories, its addictive!

Although I have not played this newest version of Necromunda, I was very fond of the old version and most excited about the campaign and how my characters would progress into the next game!! I’m not sure if I can ever return to Necromunda (since almost all of my old opponents have moved on and away from tabletop games) but I will always have a soft spot in my dusty heart for all skirmish games big and small!!! Awesome looking table by the way 🤘

Hello Anna (And Eric, of course!) Well...for all those reasons Eric has listed, that's excuse enough to at least jump in and give it a shot, right? Nothing to lose by a few hours of perfect couples' time and laughs. However, for those exact same reasons, might I suggest convincing Eric into the latest version of Kill Team. Small teams, beautiful terrain, and strong narrative. In fact, one could use the exact same terrain as Necromunda for Kill Team. I highly encourage it, actually! Whichever you choose, know that your hubby has a great channel, and is loved by us all for his dedication and creativity. Cheers and congrats on the wee-one incoming!

I'll admit that I haven't gotten into the latest version of Necromunda. There is something about the way they marketed and packaged it that didn't excite me as much as OG Necromunda, which is my favorite wargame of all time. I've been slowly saving my trash to someday build some of my own terrain as well. Seeing all the stuff you've made over the years laid out on one board is really inspiring and looks like an absolute blast to play on. Cheers Mr. Eric!

You pushed me to pull out from pile of gray my Necromunda starter and reminded me that I have quiet bog collection of Mechanicus terrain :D Btw. First thing that came through my mind after realizing all above and before you told about gaming with wife was to use Necromunda as teaser for my own better half as she liked look of Esher and Delaqe gangs. I hope both of us succede in pulling our wives into playing ^^

I just finally pulled the trigger and joined the world of WH40k with the eleet edition starter box, mainly because I got 2 starting armies. The prospect of having to cut the minis off the spru, clean up the flaws and assemble them i find very off putting, not to mention that it was advertised as no glue necessary and the first thing they say when the box arrived was we recomend gluing them! Now I have to order glue and the plant I work in is starting a outage Monday that's lasting until December the 5th and I'll be working 7/12's so I have to wait until then to build them 😥 Idk what the point of this post was supposed to be, but congratulations on the new baby!

I saw some Nomads War Party in a video and really liked their theme. So I went to the games workshop page to take a look and everything looks so interesting. Every small faction all being human but all being so different and unique. That lead me to this amazing video and I think Necromunda will be the first tabletop I´ll try out. Thank you for your battlefield showcase, really inspiring.

I love your terrain, man. I spotted so much of the old Construx building toys from my 80s childhood! Liberal use of beverage cans as well. In a good way! I've never played Necromunda, but I can see myself giving it a try given your enthusiasm. Thanks for the video!

Word!!!! Bought Necromunda in 2017 when it came out. Playing it once a week since then. we painted 5x100l boxes full of terrain + all the gangs and fw models. Never looked back at 40k games since that time :D we also transferred to a much more RPG style Sandbox Campaign which is going on for over a year now. SO much possibilities in this game.

The first rule to a happy marriage is always maintain the playfulness in your relationship. Playing together, frolicking wherever, and playing Necromunda should help keep you, Eric, and that wonderful new addition to your family happy for the rest of your lives! Now is the time to hone your gaming skills, so when that new addition is old enough, you can teach them to play, and to create gaming terrain. I would be willing to bet you will be the only Gamer Mom for miles around! Go for it! I personally think you will be very happy you did it! All the best to the three of you! xo Lisa

I am actually working on a ruleset for a game that is a bit of a middle point between Mordheim and 40k. I think Necromunda is not that far away from what I'm making, but the game I make is made specifically to be played with 40k models. That way I can get my play group who play 40k to play it with me. I have alternating activations as well, but on phases, so one player moves all theri models and the other move their models and so on. It really makes the game much more reactive and feels more realistic even though it can be frustrating when someone keeps popping in and out of cover. (But then they never get a chance to get onto any objectives) I plan on giving the PDF away for free/pay what you want when the game is finished (we are in play testing now so maybe it won't be too long)
@rogerrange48293 жыл бұрын
. . . that sounds kinda like the last edition of Kill Team . . . I'm sorry, but alternating activations within the framework of Phases is a horrible mechanic, and is 100% why I only played the last Kill Team once, and never again. It felt like a janky hybrid between 40K & Necromunda, and didn't do either well. Trust me, fully Alternating Activations is a FAR better mechanic, as it allows players to react to what their opponent is doing, and anticipate what they might be leading up to trying. And it forces you to evaluate when you want to activate each individual fighter. Much more tactically interesting.
@Xaltotun3 жыл бұрын
@@rogerrange4829 yes but I also made the game so that I have a game play with friends where the factions are balanced and not subject to the GW concept of "buy the new models or you will always lose". Also I wanted to make a campaign system where people don't become too overpowered compared to each other over the course of a long campaign.
@rogerrange48293 жыл бұрын
@@Xaltotun . . . that's not what Necromunda (or even the new Kill Team) is like at all. You choose your gang (or kill team), and no matter what it is, it can be competitive. But more to the point, Necromunda is *not* a "tournament" style game, it's a high narrative game. The story of the campaign is more important than just winning or losing battles. Is it perfectly balanced? No, of course not, but it doesn't *need* to be, that's not the point. Any gang can do well, and the fun is in playing out the narrative, not just winning.
@WylochsArmory3 жыл бұрын
Well. Disagree on the thesis but totally enjoy hearing about the elements that tweak your geek strings. AND dat table.
@joeyoung4312 жыл бұрын
Necromunda is a great game because your gang evolves and grows over the course of a number of fights. My old Goliath gang played in a very long-running campaign and developed enough character that I found myself thinking about them between games and sending them into fresh games with genuine interest in how they would fare. The time I convinced the arbitrator to let my leader skin a genestealer and wear its hide as armour (6+ save) was just one of their numerous memorable adventures. I haven't played the current edition but this game is, as Eric suggests, an absorbing, well-executed, low-buy-in example of a tabletop game and I'll be getting back into it as soon work committments permit.
@thefrenchspy813 жыл бұрын
Your doing the lord's work here. I have played Necro for over a decade and still love it. I think the only challenger I have for it in my heart is Frostgrave since Mordheim has not been updated. I get together with one if my buddies every year near Christmas and play Necro for like a week. Good luck with the wife mine has never been interested in wargaming.
@millenniumf11382 жыл бұрын
The alternating activation mechanic reminds me of my favorite tabletop game: X-wing Miniatures Game. It's the mechanic that makes that game so much fun to play, and now that I know Necromunda has that same mechanic, it makes me want to play it!
