Even after all this time, this is by far the best whistle I've ever heard on a model steam locomotive

I saw a video where the 614 was on a bridge inside a valley screaming to the heavens, I wonder if that's where they got the quilling whistle because of the echo or if they digitally created it. look up "steam whistle talent - Steve Wickersham" on KZbin.

I wonder why moving baker gear isn't a more prevalent feature in the newer steam locomotive models. I have the PS 2.0 version of this steamer which also has moving baker gear, but there are a lot of PS 3.0 models that don't have it. It's quite simple to do afterall; instead of having the bell crank pinned to the gear connecting rod; they've created a sliding slot connection, which allows the bell crank to move independently of the gear connecting rod. This in turn allows the bell crank to be driven by the movements of the valve rod and the combination lever. You'd think that MTH would want to use this for more steamers equipped with baker gear, since it looks slightly more prototypical.

Eric, you did a great review on another great engine! Thanks for taking the time! I have the 3rd Rail version of the "Patrick Henry" (#601 class J3), but this review makes me want to buy this model!!! 😁

This is incredible! I love the J3a locomotives too. What beauties they are! I love the review as well. I really thank you a bunch.

I must say that if it wasn't for your reviews on these higher end locomotives I would never get close to them. We buy second hand and mostly off of that "Famous on Line auction place" so the info you share is valuable. My wife, in profile photo, has the "O" scale stuff for her ceramic buildings. I just love to watch 'em roll by. Thank You. Greg and Jeanne

Wow. MTH has really out done themselves with this locomotive. Moving baker valve gear, great whistle, accurate bell ring rate, just awesome.

Nothere27 That bell ring is accurate? Seems awfully fast to me.

as far as I now, in the early eighties, the 614 was actually used in revenue service through the New River Gorge on the Chessie hauling coal trains. it was used as 614T to experiment new cleaner burning coal for the ACE 3000.
@allegheny487 жыл бұрын
An excellent review, Eric! Those J3a's are one of my favorite steam locomotives. MTH did a great job on this release. In realism and detailing it far exceeds the original release from 1999. I feel that the reason MTH changed engine #602 to #612 is that the J3a would not have been an accurate rendition of the 602 which was noticeably different. One little known fact is that the J3a's were originally intended to have a streamlined shroud similar to the L class Hudsons, one of which, resides at the museum in Baltimore. Hence the solid pilot, combined sand and steam domes along with a few other special design features. Although I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the whistle it does sound great and the bell sound is authentic for that class engine being that they were activated by an air ringer. Most any video of C&O 614 will verify that. One of my favorite features are the Timken roller bearing rods with the tandem side rods between the 2nd and 3rd drivers. Those absorbed piston thrust.

Very nice Eric!
@BalticFilms1447 жыл бұрын
MTH really nails it when it comes to valve gear/lubricatior rod detail. Mainly because it's there unlike other modelers and the fact that it moves. Lionel's done that a few times but not as consistent as MTH

I think that the C&O USRA Heavy Pacific that they made might have that in its station announcements. The Imperial Streamlined Hudson has the Fast Flying Virginian.

Eric, When will your review of the Lionel smoke fluid loader be out?
@bubblejomay7 жыл бұрын
i do believe that the C&O got some of these engines from the RF&P railroad, which was a very famous and profitable road. Which operated from Alexandria Virginia to Richmond Va. It was a short lined and it seems that MTH, for some reason never made a premier model of the Northern type engines of the RF&P line which used the vanderbilt tender.
@allegheny487 жыл бұрын
During a mid 1950's surge in freight traffic the C&O borrowed a handful of RF&P 4-8-4's which were also numbered in the 600 series. One that was borrowed was RF&P 614 so C&O's 614, which had been recently pulled out of storage, had its cab number changed to 611 by use of a chisel and hammer. Her original 614 cab number was only restored after Ross Rowland acquired and restored her back to service.
