In the early days of HO, when I was a kid, you had to hand build everything. One of those was an inverter kit from Heathkit to run HO from you Lionel transformer

Great stuff. And the text on the end of the blue box says "Atlas O Premier..", as well as in the upper left corner on the front packaging ..."Premier Rolling Stock"....so those 'Premier' references give it away right there.....MTH stuff...

That AC/DC transformer was to operate track while turning one off, and the other on, and on/off, etc.

You have more Trains than Trainworld. All I need is eight Trains.four diesel and four steam engines.CHEERS FROM New Jersey USA 👍

Yeah, I agree that N scale trains are so adorable. They tend to be very popular in Japan, where people live in apartments, and they therefore don't have space for any of the bigger scales (including HO).
@Elios00002 жыл бұрын
N is great size. i changed over to it after years of collecting G as kid. you can so much in single 4x8 space in N over even HO

Dare I say there will be a day when Atlas “stickered” (ex MTH) units will be prized after full changes are made to reflect full Atlas branding. I’m sure collectors are planning now.

The HO and N Scale Tropicana Reefers are likely the ex-BLMA Models tooling that Atlas acquired several years ago.

hey eric i believe the ac to dc rectifier was used for some of the cheaper mpg era trains that ran on dc so the rectifier was used to switch between ac and dc depending on what trains you want to run
@ethanloftis75732 жыл бұрын
I second this opinion, as I’ve done the same exact thing myself. I wired and house the rectifier in the locomotive for this myself though.

Hey Eric I don’t know exactly what DC someone was running with that converter box but I’d be willing to bet that the little glass bulbs are actually like a neon light bulb. I see them all the time on electronically controlled motors for work. The bulb actually helps to smith out the DC and keep any voltage spikes from continuing on

Since there are only switches at the top of the third donation you showed, my guess is that it is not a standard transformer. On old transformers there were extra connectors for auxiliary lighting, like for buildings. It would make sense for the "transformer" to be power for landscape lighting and you can just switch it on or off. Just a guess.

I wonder if that rectifier box was used to run 2-rail O-scale trains that would need more power than most old HO transformers would be able to provide
@Elios00002 жыл бұрын
or G scale off O scale power. since again most DC speed controls / transformers where made for HO

I think some of the old European 3 rail O gauge trains used DC so maybe someone made that converter to be able to run them with an American transformer.

It’s possible the AC to DC Rectifier was used for American Flyer “S” scale trains. I have an original No. 88 “Safety First” 100 Watt Transformer, that worked with a No. 15 “Safety First” Directronic Rectifier that was used to convert AC Power to DC Power for the American Flyer trains to operate. This Directronic Rectifier was produced from 1948-52. It’s possible that the person that donated this Lionel #1044 transformer was operating older Americans Flyer trains that operated on DC Power, and needed to convert the AC to DC.

Like the Sheldon Cooper quote Eric👍 He also said- "O-Gauge or no Gauge" right. Regarding the AC to DC converter, I think duggins is on the right track (no pun intended.) Not to bore everyone in the chat, but I've seen companies like Bose use light bulbs (or suitable substitute) for in-line power protection to maintain constant wattage and absorb the extra power. Cheap, smart, and very effective analog solution to protect your investment and prevent overload or distortion. I think whoever made this knew what they were doing. This was a good mix of fan thoughts, new projects, box opening, and running trains. Well thought video Eric! I look forward to seeing another transformer restoration and some tutorials/DIY side projects down the road as well! Merry Christmas - to both of you! -Jay

my Lionel republic steel switchers are 12vDC. The guy probably bought a similar 3 rail DC train set unknowingly and just made an AC to DC converter for it.
