i might have this kind of problem. thank you for making a great video like this i learned a lot sir.. i Just have a question sir. my question is i have a water chiller with a screw type compressor and a evaporative condeser. im having hard time because the chiller always shutsdown due to high pressure. and when i open my evaporative condenser it has a water rust on the coils. is that the cause of high pressure on the plant? please answer my question sir i really need a peace of.advice.

Tim, I have an ammonia coolant system, where the ammonia leaves the condenser and goes up to the roof, where it is chilled and recycled back. So, how do I determine the proper temperature of the return. Plus, there isn't any leaf strainer which will cause ammonia to lead into the air. Belts are working, fans are working, I keep getting a surge that shutting off my pump, but the engineer in charge says that it's not the water tower. what are your thoughts?

Fun, fun. I test chillers for a living. hot condenser creates a surge. If my unit surges I back off the vanes which lowers the temp in the condenser. A leak in the chiller that draws in air can create a surge. Or it can be just (in my case) bad test conditions. Watch the evap temp as this can bottom out in a surge. A surge is so loud that it sounds like a train.:)

Can a low end surge only happen on the evaporator side or can it also happen when you have a low load? If so can you explain how?
@EricStromquist5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Short answer is I don't know, but I will find out and get back to you. Give me a couple of days. Thanks for checking out the channel
@EricStromquist5 жыл бұрын
Ok here is what I found out: A surge condition that invloves the Evapotartor can be caused by: 1. Low refrigerant from a low charge or a metering device restricition 2. Low Flow which could be caused by water bypassing teh division plate or blocked tubes or air in the water lines or a dirty strainer or Pump/Valve Problem Low load can drop the low side pressure, but teh machine unloads and the high siade pressure also reduces. Hopefully that answers your question. Thanks again for checking our channel out

Doesn't this happen sometimes on startup too? I know some chillers will surge a bit on startup but then goes away. What can cause that?
@ThomasBahamas9 жыл бұрын
Juan Zingarello In any mechanical motor-based system, whether it be an A/C, refrigeration system, or your car, there's always locked rotor amperage event for startup. That means the amperage is usually higher on startup so the system can get going.

EXL HVAC Keep you from starting a recently stopped system when you have a hot evaporator. Latent heat in a recently stopped system will often be enough to do this even when the evaporator is cool.

It will stop the chiller instantly to prevent damage / released of Freon. But automatic controllers /sensors will try to keep the Hi-pressure switch from activated.

You are wrong if what you say is correct then we can trip the compressor on high discharge pressure before surge occurs but surge occurs not due to high pressure but because of low flow rate in the suction.

Apit Golden Elbow ever heard of air cooled powerpax chillers? they suffer from this on any days above around 38 degrees C (very common in australia) they are magnetic bearing as well so they suffer even worse from high pressure differential as it forces the mag bearings out of alignment very slightly but still enough to fault the chiller. nothing you can do to fix it apart from fit the powerpax cooling pads to the condenser. they are effectivley celdek evaporative cooler pads however these will very quickly screw the coils

How much does a rookie stationary engineer make starting? I`m going back to school for an associates degree in facilities maintenance technology.
@majordbag26 жыл бұрын
As someone who has just graduated from a 2 year HVAC/R program a week ago this May, I can tell you what I know from my job offer, classmates' job offers, and what our instructor. Starting off, bare minimum is about $14 an hour, though location will have a big impact on that. Many of my classmates who got hired locally are starting at $14 an hour, with the few guys who made it into the union will be making about $20 an hour but we're in an more low cost part of the Midwest. I'm starting at $25 an hour but I'm willing to relocate to a high demand area where the cost of living is higher, i.e. taking count my income my starting wage is worth about $20 an hour where I currently live but to get the same standard of living in San Francisco I'd need to make $37 an hour. The other issue is experience. After looking up what stationary engineers do, it seems like they do a lot of the more industrial hvac work. In hvac, you can expect somewhat low wages for the first 3-5 years then a significant increase in salary after that and finding work will become much easier, as most jobs tend to require at least 2 years experience and a solid employment record. So stick with it and you'll find a good job eventually.
