In this video I provide tips and insight into maintaining your car. This will not only make your car last longer, but it will be more efficient and use less fuel as well. As you can see in this video I’m a big proponent of vehicle maintenance, in my mind it’s much better to find the problems early rather than waiting for something to break.
My friends at TRQ let me use their studio and production staff to make this video for you. Thank you TRQ!

I'm constantly checking my owner's manual. By nature I'm a very curious person and I love to learn. This also comes in handy when dealing with a mechanic; they assume because I am a woman, that I'm ignorant about vehicles lol. Also, ROTATE your tires as recommended! Thank you, Eric The Guy, for helping to educate me and countless other people about our vehicles! 🙂

Plus it's sometimes an extra expense for the tire change. Then when they run out of batteries, or just get buggy they set off all kinds of warnings... (It would be nicer if they were piezoelectric or something, so they'd last forever almost).

1. Tires 2. Under the hood (check for dirt, Battery, Engine oil - first thing in the morning, Air Filter, drive belt, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid level.) 3. Wiper blades, every springs and fall 4. Check all the lights 5. Look underneath for leaks, just slide a cardboard over night. 6. Drive it and pay attention (radios, weird smell and sound) 7. Ask local mechanic if they seen any issues with your model. 8. Owner’s manual - READ IT!

Finding a trustworthy mechanic is difficult, the good ones are usually overworked and reluctant to accept new customers. My 1980 F-150 shortbed with an inline 6 cylinder is a breeze to maintain and service so I will keep it until I am dead. I also buy the service manual for any vehicle I buy.

I disagree a bit on the sentiment that the manufacturer is the best source for maintenance info. Some of the oil change intervals that are suggested by the manufacturer are too long. They try to compete on "cost of ownership" data, and will tell you to go 10,k miles between oil changes. Yes, the engine will last beyond the warranty period, and they don't really care beyond that. If you want to keep an engine running well beyond 100k miles you need to keep good, fresh oil in it.
@scotty305
@scotty305 Жыл бұрын
I agree with this, changing the oil more often is a cheap and easy way to avoid expensive repairs in the future. I have a 2000 Toyota truck with 230k miles, a local shop I trust suggests oil changes every 3000 miles.

Hi Eric, nice to see you making more videos. Like you said maintenance and preventive maintenance are key to a perfectly running vehicle. I maintain both of our vehicles. Having a garage makes it even easier to do a lot of things you listed. (My first car I had to do repairs on the street in front of my parents' house. I check tire pressure every few days. Just a 10-degree difference in air temperature will add/subtract PSI from your tire. When I do a tire rotation, I inspect the tire, tire tread depth, wear pattern, all suspension components, measure the brake pads and rotors. When I do an oil change, I check the power steering, brake and coolant level. Along with looking for any leaks, cracked hoses, etc. I have found and fixed small issues this way, preventing bigger issues down the road. The one thing I didn't hear you mention, is how you will view your vehicle differently, when you do these things and fix your own car. I have learned a lot from you and others, on how to repair and maintain our vehicles. I've got over 30 yrs. experience, maintaining five different vehicles. (Along with a lot of tools) When I look at our vehicles now, I see a bunch of little parts/components, working together, to make that vehicle run. Understanding the different functions of a vehicle, helps me to find and fix the issue.

A mechanic's guide to maintaining a car 1. Buy a Lexus or toyota 2. Buy Acura or honda 😎
@FixingWithFriends
@FixingWithFriends Жыл бұрын
...I have not had said experience with either brand. Especially the newer ones. It really depends on the specific year and model. I usually check 'car complaints' for used cars to see what issues are common and with which engine, and transmission. Some Hondas had a lot of automatic transmission issues for a while there. Then there were Scion, Toyota, Lexus that had really bad oil consumption. Anyway every brand has issues, some more than others. Sometimes there's a run of bad vehicles under a certain CEO, or when they're going bankrupt again... Or when they move manufacturing to another place...

All good tips. The color "match" between that front bumper and fender is giving me hives, though. I'd be taking that back to the body shop and ask them to try again. I know bumpers and sheet metal will naturally have some differences, and Toyotas are infamous for not matching very well from the factory, but that's pretty blatant.

My eccentric way when changing oil . NOT when it’s hot . In the morning when all the oil is in the sump or most of it and use an extractor . If you do it hot at least 1/2 a quart is still up in the motor . Or you can let it drip all night & use an oil extractor of course a service garage can’t do this. I’m talking as a retired person with all the time at hand . I know not for every one.

"I want to show you how a mechanic would maintain their car" TLDR - They don't, lol. They know exactly how long they can drive around with that engine code and they will do the bare minimum to work on it. I would NEVER buy a car advertised as "mechanic owned".
@FixingWithFriends
@FixingWithFriends Жыл бұрын
hahahaha. To be fair, it would depend on the mechanic. But if a mechanic is getting rid of a car and it isn't because they are moving... Like you say, makes you wonder what has happened or will happen, that even a mechanic (who does keep it in good repair) doesn't want to deal with.

Pretty good video but the tire pressures are something I've always argued with people over untill I show them the difference.. The door jam sticker which indicates the pressures is accurate for the spare tire, but the actual tires?, well you'd be best to look at the sidewalk of the tire (s) for every reason thinkable unless you drive exactly the posted speed limit or slightly under, if your driving on the highway/interstate and you've gotta pass a semi and it's in a slight turn then you'd better watch doing so above 75mph with tires only filled to what the door label says, Please look at the tire and Follow what the Sidewall says,, ( but don't fill them to the max shown, instead fill them a couple lbs under max which is typically 5 lbs over what the door label indicates while still being safe ) I'm not going talk anymore on this ( tire psi ) because it's very controversial and not worth my time but Please Follow what the sidewall of the tires say, it's just safer Thanks Eric for making another good video!
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. In my experience, it's usually the max tire pressure that is printed on the sidewall, not the pressure that is specific to the vehicle called for by the manufacturer.

You might not want to check your oil first thing in the morning in your car is parked on a driveway with a slope, and saying that your oil strictly burns away is also IMO a slightly dangerous thing to say to the not mechanically inclined among us. Not all engines burn oil. To the extent they check their oil, they might see the oil on the stick, desperately in need of a change and just keep driving because they think they are fine, not realizing that it does degrade over time.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy Жыл бұрын
Good points, but I have yet to see an engine that doesn't burn some oil during operation. I've never seen brakes burn off fluid, that was the point I was trying to make. It was more about brake fluid than oil. Also, I agree 100% about checking the oil on a level surface. Thanks for the comment.

I find myself sometimes doing so too much, by consistently checking the air on my Wife & I's vehicle tires, etc. Just having an eye out for any details or noticeable changes helps. I kept noticing that my tires appeared to have "cracks" in them. Over time, those cracks grew and sure enough, earlier this month, I nearly had a front-passenger side blow-out. Ended up needing a full set of tires, but at least there's the peace of mind of riding on something new, rather than worn.

I did a full tune up on my own changed the Original Honda fuel filter NGK iridium spark plugs and NGK wires and Original distributor cap but couldn’t change the rotor the screw was stuck so I didn’t want to strip the screw and decided to leave it until I get back home in NY I also swapped out the upstream O2 Sensor becuase it read P0131 and after replacing it CEL went off. My problem is I just drove it down from Miami TO NY and I had/have 3 problems. 1st - The RPM idle is low around 300 -400 RPM while just standing when I put the A/C on it goes to 800-1000 standing. 2nd - I did a full tune up when I drove and did about 600 miles since I had to stop in Orlando I started to feel the car be little hesitant when applying more acceleration little it wanted to push but was struggling. A CEL went on and I got off the I-95 and pulled into a gas station. Codes read P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire P0301 Cylinder 1 P0302 Cylinder 2 P0303 cylinder 3 P0304 cylinder 4 Luckily I saved the previous owner stuff so put back his old NGK G-Force spark plugs to see if that would work out. I reseted the CEL and drove after restring for 1 hour. 3 - I drove for another 400 miles with no problems now I’m in Virginia and after I passed an traffic jam accident scene I started to drive when I was accelerating any after 40mph the civic was trying to accelerate it was hesitant like it had hiccups but no CEL was on so I pulled off the I-95 and stopped in a gas station I checked for codes no codes was reading since I had no CEL on and I decided to amp up the gas from 87 to 93 and I put back the original distributor cap and wires and let it rest for an hour and I got back home without any problems. I know this was long to read but I’m giving the full strong and I need help. Car is sitting at home getting rest. Before I start driving around NY all the help will be more than appreciated. Thank you.

Tires, yes, very very important. For me, I'm a check the fluid religiously type of person. I check all my fluids 2x a month. I change my oil every 5k. I too have a Toyota Camry.

Some people might be insulted... Asking people to actually take care of their vehicle? That's a bit much for some! There REALLY are people out there that DON'T even know their vehicle DOES require maintenance!

OIL SHOULD ALWAYS BE CHANGED AS SOON AS IT'S DIRTY....NOT JUST WHEN THE INTERVAL ARRIVES!

@@HouseCallAutoRepair As soon as it looks dirty at all... no (It will go dark just from heat cycles). But unless you have an easy way to get an oil sample tested (or have a vehicle that monitors oil condition not just intervals), then intervals are realistically the only way to track. Not that it should be 30,000km or whatever some oil jugs say.

New sub here! I stumbled upon you after I randomly looked online to see if a certain automotive KZbinr knows what he's talking about or if he's just full of you know what (you may or may not know the name). I know how to program a car to get me from point A to point B and what fluids to occasionally check and that's about it. I recently bought a CPO Subaru and am looking forward to seeing what other knowledge you have to offer. That said, I'm glad I found you!

Hi Eric, we have a 2002 Honda CR V with a manual transmission. We have had the clutch replaced once and it shifted very smoothly afterwards. Now there is a binding or sticking in the clutch which is starting to interfere with smooth shifts. Can you suggest anything that could be done to correct this problem? Thank you!

Tires and brakes (from a safety standpoint) are at least the most important pieces of a car that people SHOULD keep tabs on. If your engine stops working, that may be a problem but may not get you killed in many instances. Bad tires or brakes or both could -- even at low speeds. Brakes are probably the most common thing I see neglected as I hear people a ll the time running around on bad brakes (to a point where they're squeaking or squealling). When you hear that, it's time for new brakes (new everything -- pads/shoes and drums/rotors) and possibly new calibers because something is wrong and you're running metal on metal. For brakes (and even tires) during a tire rotation, just visually inspect them (easier to do with disc brakes obviously) but this should be part of your tire-rotation routine, which is also a maintenance item that may have been skipped in the tire section (maybe not). Most shops will inspect the brakes when this is done if the car is put on the lift for an oil chainge anyway and you do a tire rotation.

As a mechanic I don't need to watch this, but as an Eric Fan who has missed that voice like an old friend, 👍 thumbs up too and support the channel. I will add check what the tire says more than the door. That sticker was placed by the manufacturer and what tires the car had when it rolled off the assembly line, and in a perfect world those two should match, but they sometimes won't, I hear they are working on the perfect world, but it's not there yet. Example tire reads 51 psi and the door sticker reads 38...yeah it can be that far apart. Been running into this, got new tires saw a huge drop in gas mileage checked the tires all from the shop inflated to 38....uh tire read 51....driving around on partially filled tires yeah, always fill up to what the tire reads as the max air in the tire. The vehicle doesn't care as long as it meets or exceeds that air pressure. Why shops are doing this now boggles my mind, do what the tire reads that is what is on the car, that sticker doesn't know lol. Common sense. Anyway glad to have you back Eric missed ya Buddy. 👍

I have only one correction. Transmission "lifetime fluid" is a scam no matter what brand(yes even toyotas). Plan to do at least a Transmission service (essentially drain and refill) between every 50k-80k as fluid gets dirty traps contaminants and moisture.

The owners manual could be half as thick and faster to look up, if it werent for all the obvious precautions in it. Like who is going to drink the battery acid??! What is this automotive world coming to ERic?

If your vehicle can be switched into 4wd, use it every once in a while so it doesn't get locked up. If your vehicle is 4wd, it needs to have rear differential fluid changed sometimes.

Those geniuis engineers think that transmission fluid is "lifetime fluid" and that we only need to change the oil every 10,000 miles...🙄

I'd like to correct the information on tire pressure on that corolla. That generation has it listed as 35psi on the door jam. Not 32psi.
