Eric, a car body man that had to repair a bunch of plastic parts on a dashboard housing showed me a neat trick... you take plain old super glue and stick the items together, then you sprinkle Arm & Hammer baking soda on the part and then apply super glue over it. It hardens like rock in a matter of seconds and the A&H acts as a filler building up the area as much as you need it to. It works great on bosses where screws have been over torqued and broken off the boss... you can paint it and finish it with a Dremel tool and it's very versatile. Just wanted to share... the Qbond powder reminded me of his neat trick!
@bobbyjohnnascar9 жыл бұрын
I think the powders are for use where you have a gap to fill or an area to build up. On your Elvis all you needed was the glue /no powder.
@JGonYT9 жыл бұрын
Eric, I use something like this all the time at work- a lot of times to rebuild broken car remote fobs (especially the keychain loop part). What you should have done is put the head on Elvis and then put it face down on the workbench. Then you should have put a line of the powder along the crack and then put a few drops of the glue on it. No clamps and it would be dry instantly.

glue the two parts together with liquid glue,, after is dry ,, add the power on to the top of the crack, then add liquid glue , this will reinforce the joint

There is an old trick where baking soda is used to cure super glue instantly. This results in ivory-like stuff that is strong enough to withstand the pressure of a guitar string, for example. I do suspect that is is very much like the glue you have here. Nicely done, Eric!
@TheCuriousNoob9 жыл бұрын
Frank Goossens Was going to mention that... my wife hit something and cracked that black plastic lip on the front of her car and baking soda + krazy glue worked wonders. I wouldn't use it on anything that's meant to be looked at but it does work!

Frank Goossens is there a special property in the baking soda for that purpose? Or will any powdery substance mix in with the glue just like sement and water.. I wonder
@FrankGoossens_DIYDental9 жыл бұрын
I think it is the soda itself that has the correct chemical state to make a kind of plastic. But mixed with a bit of metal, who knows what the outcome might be.

3Dtimespace I found this: The bicarbonate starts the reaction between one cyanoacrylate and another one. The bicarbonate and cyanoacrylate form an ion which reacts with another cyanoacrylate molecule. This starts a chain reaction (polymerization) which ends up a very good adhesive.
@pjw205ovid9 жыл бұрын
Frank Goossens I had a friend that had a quarter inch hole wear into his plastic radiator and I suggested using baking soda and crazy glue, it was not a permanent patch but lasted a couple days until he could get it repaired, good stuff to keep in your glove compartment for emergencies. You do have to put something behind the hole like the radiator top but it fixed it. It does make a great filler especially if you are in a pinch like he was. baking soda and crazy glue, sand paper and tape and your tool box is prepared for odd issues. It also works for setting a nut into place if you don't want it to back out on you. Strong enough to hold it but still you can break the bond to remove the nut too.
@eldoradony9 жыл бұрын
That product appears to be the same thing as super glue. The repair on the clock would probably gone as well or better if you left out the powder. I could see the powder in a case where small fragments are missing along the fracture line but on a clean break the powder just gets in the way. I did learn something; assemble the pieces and drip it into the crack. Thanks.

I have used Q-bond to fix all bunch of stuff. Love it!
@pookatim9 жыл бұрын
You should think of Q-Bond as a "weld" instead of an adhesive. For the best results on Elvis, you should have placed a strip of tape over the front of the break, laid it down flat, and applied powder and liquid liberally to the back. After it sets up, it can be sanded flat if you want. When used this way, the resulting weld is stronger than the plastic. You are not gluing the pieces together, you are welding them together.
@justin67319 жыл бұрын
Qbond is an amazing product been using it for a while now and its never failed. works very well on car trip that falls off or laptop repairs,
@vulkusbanks59859 жыл бұрын
If you have cracked motorcycle fairings, QBond is awesome for the repair. The most effective repair though, is when you slightly valley the two pieces to be repaired. As this gives the material somewhere to sit. Shiny plastic like your Elvis clock would have better off being slightly scuffed to 'key' the QBond material.
@psdaengr61559 жыл бұрын
Qbond seems a lot like a suoerglue version of JB Weld, with one part being granulated powder probably coated with an accelerator. I used JB Weld 30 years ago on a Renault R16 with a broken bracket on the side of the carburetor. Renault had pulled out of the US, making it difficult to get parts, and the car had to get back in service quickly. The temporary fix was still good when the car was scrapped 10 years later.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Purchased some and it repaired broken plastic bits on a tent meaning I won't have to fork out on a new one! As for superglue and baking soda, it might do the same, but this has already paid for itself so I cannot complain. Will try baking soda and normal superglue when this runs out, and if I don't care about the colour.
@signalhillscooter9 жыл бұрын
The way you are supposed to use the power is to put the head on first then put the powder on the joint then apply the glue to the powder. That gives more material to give strength like a weld would by adding more material. You could use just the glue to get the part to stay in place then put the powder along the back of the joint and pit the glue to it. Put Elvis face down on the bench to make it work. That stuff is great for re building broken off tabs on all kinds of things.
@josh330259 жыл бұрын
I have this stuff and you should glue the part together with just the glue first because the powder won't let it fit right. Then put some glue on the backside of the crack and then powder and more glue. This is so the powder sticks where you want it. I found it easier to apply the powder by making a small chute out of paper. I like it.
@BajamanCam9 жыл бұрын
Nice product, used it many times. Normally with a repair like that, you'd glue it together first without the powder, then apply the powder to the backside of the break and add more glue. That makes a very strong bond and you don't get powder between the break itself.
@ghettohillbilly19 жыл бұрын
here in Canada we have Rapid-fix,its the same thing really,it's great stuff, I used it to fix a cracked brass fitting in my compressor and patched a leaky plastic sending unit piece, itwas the only thing that worked for the sending unit, I also used it to fix a cracked gas can, awesome stuff

Cool product Eric. Never heard of Q-Bond before. Since it's made by the same guys that make JB Qwik and JB Weld probably goes without saying it's some type of epoxy hardener with the filler as the powder.

Would this fix a broken plastic turn signal? Can you upload pictures on here? it’s kind of hard to get where I need to repair because there’s a round plastic piece on the turn signal and the break is right before it, so the round piece is kind of in the way. I can upload a picture of where I’m talking about. It’s on a 2017 Hyundai Electra and the turn signal has a cone shaped piece right before the break

I have uses Qbond a bit and you will find that the best way to repair stuff is to not follow their instructions.. put a little glue on first.. let it spread a bit then add the powder. Also the powder is more to build the area up.. I would have put Elvis laying face down.. put the pieces where they needed to be then dripped a few drops of glue over the area you wanted to bond. Then sprinkle the powder over the area. Repeat to build up adding a bit more overlap of powder onto both areas to be fixed. I have fixed even SkiDoo plastic snowmobile hoods with the stuff.. it works great and holds up well. It is also sandable and paintable. Its good stuff.

Hey dude, as you found out the q-bond is not for that type of glueing! Its really best for filling and reinforcing, I love the stuff it's great for fixing broken plastic sprues, holes etc. The glue part is just super glue, its pure cyanoacrylate so very strong, when you run out and still have powder left (as it lasts forever) you can use superglue as long as its good quality and not watered down, in fact you can test how good superglue is by how well it absorbs into the powder! I think the power is a very finely ground plastic, grey and black are the same just different colour. It's great stuff, I have drilled it and tapped it to great success and fixed light aluminium parts successfully with it. There are a couple of plastics it doesnt stick to same as superglue I imagine, I always put the powder on first but not too thick as it can set before you can soak it all the way through. With sellotape and blu-tack you can make all sorts of handy shapes etc :)

@robertbee97769 жыл бұрын
I always end up with J-B Weld for a repair because it can withstand a 550 degree temperature when fully cured, and doesn't cost much. The super glues seem to be very brittle but work well at room temperature, above or below and they fall apart. Sunlight exposure and temperature range are very important on most glue repairs and a better test might be a temperature based shock test, where you hit a cured block of fully cured glue to see how much force it takes to break it at different temperatures. Freeze and melt temperature tests results would be proof of any durability claims made by the products manufacturer. To glue a small piece of metal (penny, nickel, plastic distributor piece) to the side of a hot engine block and see if it can endure that for a few seasons of temperature changes without falling off would be a good test. Is it reliable or is it crap wasting your money and time? It might work for short time or longer or not at all.
