Something to note as being a mechanic: when breaking the tire seals, always be mindful of where the valve stem is, because some wheels, especially on new cars, have sensors that connect to the inside rim. If the machine arm hits that sensor, chances are,mits going to be crushed and 99% of the time damaged. To prevent this, keep the valve stem at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions, to break the seal on both sides of the tire and to keep the sensor as far as possible from the tire.

Me being a tire guy myself, I really appreciated how thoroughly he cleaned the bead of the wheel before mounting the tire, however, I ALWAYS go a step further and bead seal the wheel after cleaning it. I found that the soapy water solution I use for lubrication can enhance the rate at which the wheel corrodes. So the bead sealer not only seals the bead of the wheel to the rubber, it seals the clean surface of the rim and helps fight corrosion.

Hello, what brand of sealer do you use?

As someone who mounted and balanced tires for 2 years, it's nice to see someone actually clean the lip of the rim for once. Beware of the cheap tire places because the kids working there mostly are never taught this ending up in rims leaks. He is right that bead sealer is crap. It's like trying to polish a turd.

few mistakes I noticed hold the knob on the bead breaker so it wont move, always good to lube the beads before removing tire(less stress bead removal wedge),hold the tire down in the valley opposite from the wedge when installing.Things you left out about balancing- measurements(wheel width, size, and most balancers need distance inner bead to balancer distance)3 main types of balancing Normal like you showed,Static like you explained,and Mag(weight inside only).Oh dot is lightest part of tire.
@johnkaplanian12 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik, One added note is that if you have puncture, and need to remove the tire to put a batch underneath which is more secure than the external type and you do not want to upset the balance or do not want to pay more for the balance is to hold with you a correction fluid (white fluid used in offices for correcting typo errors on printed documents) and put a dot on the balance bullet and another one on the tire and third one on the wheel prior wheel removal so that every thing is aligned back.

I'm glad I could provide what will hopefully be some helpful insight. Just to add to it, your second two thoughts, that is corrosion on the wheel when it was installed, and corrosion developing since installation are both very common problems. For reasons I don't fully understand, these problems become more noticeable in the winter. It could be, as you pointed out, the salt that becomes an issue, but I have a sneaky feeling there are other contributing factors...

Great video Eric. Really shows exactly how the pros change a tire. It's too bad that most shops wont allow people to see how the work is done. Nice that through you people can see exactly what is being done to their vehicles. And to be able to make informed choices about who will work on their cars and trucks.
@AlexGreenwoodUkulele5 жыл бұрын
Hehehehe the idea behind the dots, usually there's a yellow and a red. The yellow is the lightest point of the tyre, the red is the heaviest. You're meant to balance just the rim alone to find where the light spot is. Then you put the red dot (the heaviest point of the tyre) at the lightest point. If you don't want to balance the wheel, the yellow dot should be placed around the valve because it's a logically-heavier spot of the wheel; It's strengthened to make up for the hole in the metal and has the valve sat there. Remove tyre. Clean wheel rim. Place rim on balance machine and check wheel balance values. Mark lightest/heaviest spots of the rim with caulk/crayon. Place rim on tyre machine and mount tyre, lining up the dots as needed. Heavy rim spot wants the light tyre spot and vica-versa.

forgot one step " Release the wheel once the bead starts to seal" I bet Scott did it with out even realizing it. Also notice a trick was missed, "pull the top bead into place right at the valve before putting in air" if you don't a different side may start to rise and you may loose the seal at the valve. Tires were my first job, had a lot of fun doing it. Great vid. You should make a vid on mounting a 35 series tire, lol. I used to mount them myself using 1 or 2 bars.

i agree 100% on using the valve stem tool the way it "isnt" supposed to be used (pulling on it rather that using it as a lever), because you wont scratch the rim. also, you must take caution when dealing with TPM sensors on the valve stem. you can crush it when breaking the bead, or rip it off if you catch the bead on it while removing the tire

The tire were old and hard and lost traction especially on wet roads. See the winterization video. I don't like stick weighs because they tend to come off.

You might have a fun time with that - I've had to drill and replace studs in a similar situation. Now I try to loosen and re-torque at least once a year and it seems to solve the problem. If it's stuck on the hub just loosen the lug nuts several turns and roll the vehicle back and forth a little. As long as the nuts come off you shouldn't have a problem separating the wheel from the hub. It's a bit of a pain though if you're already on stands though!

My first automotive job c. mid 70's was 'busting tires'... I still don't miss it. :) Then (and I'm reasonably sure now), the blue spooge was a dried thick soapy solution, intended to protect sidewalls from scuffs. Just use a nylon scrub brush while flushing with a garden hose... it'll come right off. Better tire shops used to (and likely still) have a machine that spins, flushes & brushes mounted tires, making the process quick/neat.
@DustinRogersinMO11 жыл бұрын
Dynamic balancing beads are the only thing I'll use anymore. They got rid of some 70mph vibrations that "computer balancing" multiple times couldn't get rid of. Plus, it gets those hideous weights off the outside of the wheel, you'll never throw/knock them off, and depending on the beads you use, you can reuse them over and over again
@griminc65486 жыл бұрын
I use balancing beads because its what I have access to in the shop, we use them in our semi tires. Not sure if there supposed to be used in smaller car tires, but figured why not when they even make them for motorcycle tires. Been using for years with no issues. Super easy to use just weight tire and weight bag full of them to throw in tire before you seal it. Might want to do research before trying them yourself if curious not my responsibility if it fucks up your tires, but they work for me.

combination of factors. the main issue being runout. Run out of the tire and runout of the wheel. when these two factors are not optimized it creates and imbalance and vibration. Scott performed what's called a dynamic balance, which remedies radial and lateral runout. radial runout causes a hop and lateral runout causes a shimmy. most shops only perform a static balance (weight on one plane) and correct the hop, only.

I've worked in tire shop on similar machines and You should keep in mind couple things: 1) do not remove the sticker until balance the tire, because if there will be problems with tires and You see it only on balancing machine, the seller may not want to exchange bad tire (at least our stores often do so); 2) try to look on Your tire when it rotates on balancing machine (from the side or on some machines even from the front, but be careful of water splatters, sand or little stones that may hurt Your eyes), especially if You buying used tires. there can be some defects unseen until the wheel is spinning (some tilts, prominency, etc.). also you'll see if tire is not fully placed on rim; 3) always be very carefull. leave this work to professionals. You may watch the process and make sure that everything is allright. DO NOT TRY TO DO IT BY YOURSELF if there is noone to control You and check the result. if Your tire gonna slip from the rim or even blow on the highway.. noone don't want that happen. p.s.: never watch on tire when it is pumping, beware of dust and soapy water or paste used for lubrication. there is a ton of warning stickers on tire machines. p.p.s.: thumbs up for ponytail owners ^_~*

I always get my tyres from Costco in Leeds, UK. They use all the machinery shown here & always do a great job, plus they use Nitrogen. My previous car was a real pain for them; last time took them two hours per tyre to change and fit a new one on! This was due to the alloys I had at the time TSW Blade with 195/50/15 tyre size. Nitrogen vs Air is a moot point because once you have left the tyre garage, you tend to fill up with air from there on. Does seem to drive better on Nitrogen though.

The yellow mark for lining up the tyre to the valve......... I had an argument with the garage that fitted my new tyre's. The guy at the service desk insisted it didn't make any difference at all. So they did the first two wheels without lining up the yellow mark and ended up with balancing weights all the way around the inside of both wheels. The second two tyres, I stood there and made sure the fitter lined up the marks, these two wheels needed just one single balancing weight each. For all this arguing they were completely wrong and i've now got two wheels which are going to drive like a bag of spanners as soon as all those weights start to fall off.

I have been a tire tech for three years and i can tell you right now that that mark really doesn't make much difference if any at all. The yellow mark represents the light spot in the tire and you line it up with the valve stem simply because generally it is the heaviest spot in the tire. Wheels have flaws just as tires are not perfect, that dot is just a generalization on where it will be easiest to balance for the technician. Its not meant for you as the customer. if you want that perfect balance to minimize wheel tramp is to have your wheels roadforce balanced on a special balancer. As a tech with access to a roadforce balancer ive found the dot makes minimal to no difference on anything other than a brand new set of tires going on a brand new set of wheels, and even then its still wrong half of the time. Also as a side note DO NOT be an asshat to the technicians! We do remember you, and will be less likely to go that extra mile for you the next time your car comes in for service(and some excluding myself will cut corners just to get you to go away faster)! We do know what we are doing, were just trying to get our job done and its super annoying to ave some guy yell at you for 20 min when your doing your job right.... If you have a concern ask us in a polite manor and we will fix the issue.
@Strider965510 жыл бұрын
Devon Thomas The truth is evident from the result.... Two tyres fitted with the yellow mark wherever, they have balancing weights all the way around the inside.... The two lined up, 1 single balancing weight per wheel. Fact is some people are just too damn lazy to do a job properly.
@AntoineLubnan11 жыл бұрын
not necessarily. if you are just rotating and balancing, and the tires are not directional and the place where they will be rotated to does not require the tire be dismounted and remounted, they can simply be checked on a balancer. if the balance checks out and doesn't call for any weight, then the current weights do not need to be removed. I would recommend checking balance because so few shops use the right wheel weights and they commonly come off.
@jarinwilson953910 жыл бұрын
Some people would argue whether or not clip weights can be used on the exterior of aluminum wheels. If the clip weights are coated with a Teflon material, I have had very little issues with using clip weights on such rims. I see tape weights fall off all the time and so I used clips instead. You can't always go by the 'book' Be cautious with TPMS sensors too.
@stricklandgarageaviation28642 жыл бұрын
I contacted Firestone about the red dot on their tires. They simply said it indicates the high spot on the tire. Most alloy wheels are machined and are considered true when it comes to "run out." Also some wheels that have sensors may be a touch heavier at the valve stem as most are attached to the stem. With this in mind, putting the red dot on the valve stem may cause more of an unbalance.

+braxtondell exactly, you should always break the bead with the valve stem on the opposite side. And when using the bar to pry the tire up, make sure you have the tpms sensor on the same side. This avoids breaking the tpms sensor.

+Taylor Walker in my city, we have a training center for Discount Tire, lasts 8 days for new employees. We are taught to break the back bead first and have the valve stem at 12:00 or 6:00 at all times. Then when we dismount tires, the sensor always has to be underneath the tire-wheel spacer. And when mounting tires, the sensor either always has to be at 9:00 when facing the machine, or must be underneath the crease where part of the tire is above the wheel and part is under the wheel while it is rotating.
@13anomalous169 жыл бұрын
+Taylor Walker Oh and about breaking the bead opposite of the sensor, in most cases you could do that, but older 2000 American models, typically Ford have a band TPMS sensor which is always opposite of the valve stem. So if you aren't careful, you could easily damage that band sensor, and let me say, those are a real pain to remove if you have to.

I think the paint mark is usually where the RFID chip is to identify the tire. I never heard of what you just said being the case... they Mark the optimum spot to mount the tire?

how not to break a sensor . position the tire sensor 1 o clock from machine head , remove top bead. position tire 2 o clock from head remove bottom bead. then to put back on, position sensor 3 o'clock from head and then 530. works everytime . Cool video .

Worth mentioning that the service packs for the TPMS sensors should also be replaced with every tire. Too many go without being replaced, which ends in having to replace the entire sensor when it corrodes all the way through. It replaces the rubber gasket and nut on the outside of the sensor.

Usually that means your bearings are bad or you need to get your tires balanced. Theres a lot of things it could be but those are the most popular.
