How To Choose A Healthy Hamster

There is nothing wrong in choosing a hamster with health problems but you must be willing to get it immediate vet treatment, be aware that you may have to make repeated vet trips through the hamsters life and that the hamster may not survive if the sickness is severe but you will be making a big difference for that hamster if you are able to help it.

emeraldquartz hamsters don't spread diseases and they're not dirty unless you don't clean them, (you don't clean them with water, you use a sand bath)i haven't got mine yet, but I know a lot about hamsters because I have done so much research on them, if you really want a hamster, do lots of research on them and make a powerpoint about hamsters saying what good pets they make and show it your mom. Also if you have never owned a hamster before I suggest getting a Syrian hamster they are bigger and easier to tame (all hamsters are different so it doesn't apply to all Syrians, but generally speaking) Hope this helped :)

I have a special hamster currently. He is fine and perfectly normal but he has a special tooth. He has 1 tooth that is pearly white and all of the others are normal. It grows faster than the others but thankfully it grows outward! :) He defiantly has a special place in my heart. Awe I love him. And yes I do take him to an exotic vet every few months to get it trimmed.

Currently waiting for the vet to call back and see what we should do. They're such hardy little animals, little soldier keeps troshing on even though he's obviously in pain! I went to petsmart yesterday and they had 1 hamster (Syrian) and he was so cute! The lady took the cage out that he was in and I put my hand down in the cage he came right over and sniffed my hand he didn't even mind people holding him because at petsmart he gets very spoiled since he is the only one! Get the hamster from where ever you want. Petco & Petsmart do not get their hamsters from mills, they have contracts with breeders who sell hamster pups that aren't good enough for shows to pet stores. Nobody breeds hamsters for profit, hamsters cost 100x more to keep than can be earned selling them.

El Gordo That is actually not true. Backyard breeders (which are the breeders you are talking about) and rodent mill still exist, where the animals are bred in very poor conditions (which reduces the cost for the animals). I don't think an ethical breeder would ever sell their hamsters to a pet store, so the breeders you are talking about are probably unethical. Unethical breeding can cause genetic problems and different health problems. Some even die due to genetic issues! That is why it is always preferable to adopt, but if you have no other option and still want a hamster, then you'll have to buy from a pet store.

Also, many dwarf hamster breeders aren't even breeding for show quality...dwarf hamsters are easier to keep than mice and are feeders for their reptile collection. Any that don't get eaten are sold to the pet store. So technically every hamster at the pet store was considered not fancy enough to show or by chance wasn't eaten by something else and is a rescue.

Last year I got a grey dwarf hamster from PetSmart and it died within 3 months. There was blood in the cage and a large bump on its bum. I don't know what happened. I had him in a 20 gallon tank, a safe wheel, a hide, and toilet paper tubes to play in. I loved him and treated him like royalty. ☹️

Hello Erin! Amazing video (as always :3). I am planning on adopting a Syrian hamster soon, and I have some quick things to ask. I usually come to my local PetSmart in the day time (I know it's PetSmart, but this particular one actually gives them solid wheels, good bedding and usually don't keep Syrians together), and I don't often get a chance to see them much. Do you think it would be okay or stressful if I asked a store associate to take out the hamster? And I said usually when I meant they don't keep Syrians together. I saw two cute little black ones sleeping yesterday. Would it be alright if I chose one of the two, or do you think that because they are kept together, then one or the other would have some kind of stress-related health problem? -Thanks!

I have a question though, I go to my grandma's every once in a while or sleep over at friend's houses some times, should I bring my hamster with me to my grandma's and keep a separate cage there since i usually stay there for a 12 hours during the day or should I let my hamster stay home while I'm gone until I get back at night? Your hamster can stay at home, you only need to worry if you are gone for more than 2 days then you'll need a pet sitter/someone to care for your hamster while you are gone :)

Yes. Males have a ball shape to their bums, even when their testicles are not visible. Don't take the absence of testicles as a sign of gender because they can go up and down.

I was listening to my hamster sleep to check if his breathing was okay. I TOTALLY heard a clicking sound and I was so scared. Of course then I left my room to go ask my parents if we could go to the vet. While I was going down the hall, I passed my brother's room. I dunno My winter white Rumple passed away In his sleep yesterday after nearly 4.5 years for him It was a full life and I am left with plenty of happy moments and fond memories of my furry buddy. He looked pretty peaceful and only the day before he was burrowing and bathing In his sand living It up. So to me It was worth It. I am satisfied at the personality he developed over his time with me, satisfied I was able to have him for as long as I did and personally I had a lot going on these passed 5 years and he was my buddy through nearly all of them. So to me he was my friend and I'm glad I could share In his life however short It may have been.

I went to petsmart and found a Chinese dwarf hamster that looked exactly like amalease. The hamster I found I also held it and it was so warm and soft and nice it didn't bite me

I once adopted a hamster with no teeth was name was pirate. it was one of my first hamsters and I didn't know that he wasn't healthy. The pet store game him to us for free. He was the sweetest thing ever!! He lived for about 2 years

My Chinese Hamster used to bolt to her house every time I walked into the room, but now she is fine with me being near her and she doesn't bite me anymore. She's really calmed down.

My hamster was healthy but had attacks were she would kind of freak out and run and bite it was so sad she ended up dying from one in May and she was so sweet. In her last moments she wouldn't eat or walk and when she did she walked in circles and kept falling over I know the cause just can't spell it but anyway it was one of the saddest days ever.

I had bought a Robo hamster yesterday, it was doing fine and was pretty happy, and I am in the middle of taming it right now. I noticied this morning that there was a bald spot on its hip twards the back. It was red on the bald patch but not bleeding. I hung a round with it for a while. Then I left for a few hours and then came back. He then had a nother spot. I looked a round the cage to see if he was scratching at all but he is not. I was thinking maby he had glands there like syrian hamsters do, but I am not sure. He isnt very old I do not think the pet store did not tell me. P.S. His name is Kane.

I like going to smaller pet shops because I went to a big one that was attached to a garden centre and I never got to tame her but I went to a small one in my town and she was already tame because they would get lots of attention because the shop was so small and they were near the till

hi Erin, I had my hand in my mouse cage (as I do) then one of my mice spent 10minutes of her life putting all of their bedding on my hand. do you know why this is ?

When my dad got me hamsters, him and my brother said that the brown one bit the employee until the employees finger bled. But then strange thing was that,my hamsters were never tamed and that the brown one never bit me or playfully nibble on my finger

I'm really worried now! I got my little Millie about 3 weeks ago, but since having her she has developed a little bald path just above her nose (my last hamster of 2.5 years had one) but does this mean Millie is poorly?? She's still very young and not 100% tame yet so don't want to take her to the vet and stress her out unless it is something that needs looking at xx
