The word Stoat is a common name, that derived from a word meaning Bold, Brave. Some places use Stoat, some don't, so all stoats are Weseals, but not all Weasels are Stoats. So (Mustela nivalis) is commonly known as Least Weasel, Little Weasel, Common Weasel, or just Weasel. (Mustela erminea) is commonly known as Common Stoat, or just Stoat, Short-Tailed Weasel, Beringian Ermine. (Mustela richardsonii) is commonly known as American Ermine, American Stoat, American Short-Tailed Weasel. (Mustela haidarum) as Haida Ermine. The word Weasel derived from a word meaning smelly animal. The name Short-Tailed Weasel is used because in America you have (Neogale frenata) that is known as the Long-Tailed Weasel, Bridled Weasel, Masked Ermine, or Big Stoat.

Eat good healthy foods, clean water & clean beds. They get to go outside. Which most of them have never done. They run around the house, have lots of toys, & sleep in the bottom drawer of my (their) dresser. You are doing an amazing job with these tiny ones. Keep up the good work.

If that's just the same little creature in all these shots, how come it's not hugely fat from all that food? Entire hot dogs!

Well, she stores it for later. If I give 5 hot dogs she will stay away for days. Just one, she will be back next day for more. Fish is a problem, because she stores it near by and it starts to smell after a few days. So, I try to not over-feed.

Mustelids have incredibly high metabolic rates. They have to be hunting and killing all the time to 'stay fed'. This chap is in effect saving the lives of local birds and rabbits etc providing an alternative food source.

In Afrikaans, and I assume Dutch, stout (pronounced stoat) means naughty. :)

Perfect name. En ja, ook in het Nederlands.

Which meaning of naughty? Naughty can mean mischievous, or it can have sexual connotations.

Mischievous and misbehaving, definitely something you'd admonish a child not to be.

Ermines are beautiful! I wish I could say that I've seen them, but I never have. I do believe that I may have seen tracks, however, near our house on a trail. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could make them feel at home in our yard? We have a lot of squirrels and mice near our house, but I'm worried that neighborhood cats and dogs or human activities might be scaring them off.

My Patronus is a Stoat. After seeing this I am totally happy with that.
