Though there are echos of Brahms' c minor quartet and earlier quartets by Zemlinsky and Schoenberg, this is a beautiful and expertly written quartet.

The molto adagio is clearly inspired by schubert cello quintet : --> both have "A" section in E major that leads with a surprising modulation to the turbulent central section in F minor, with cello triplets
