Borgnine's time was up when Pearl Harbor happened. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor until Nov 1941. In January 1942, he reenlisted and then patrolled the Atlantic Coast stationed out of New York City aboard the antisubmarine warfare boat, the USS Sylph, a converted yacht, until September 1945. Total time served was 9 and a half years. 🇺🇸 His autobiography "Ernie" is a wonderful book. He went from an Academy Award in Marty to TV and McHale's Navy. He later did voiceovers on "Spongebob Squarepants." A versatile actor until the end. You might say I am a big fan! 🙂 And a Navy veteran. I reviewed his book and he actually wrote me a thank you note which hangs framed in my den/study.

I cant remember if it was late 1957 or early 1958 but I do remember we had over a foot of snow in Alexandria VA. And dad was stationed at the pentagon as a media aid. I woke up early one morning and a man was sleeping on the couch. It turned out to be Ernest Borgnine. He and Glen Ford met with dad to get some advice for the movie Torpedo Run. Then went drinking with dad after work. Ford quit early and went to the hotel. But Dad and Borgnine closed the bar and he came home with dad. We had breakfast and Borgnine had over a dozen slices of bacon and two bowls of grits with four eggs. Then Dad took him to meet Ford at Washington airport. And Dad was transferred to Guantanamo Cuba where we lived for the Bay Of Pigs and dad was transferred back to the Pentagon during the missile crises. Because they shut down his job with the last navy blimp squadron.

gee, that's too bad that the guy who had THE ROLLING STONES on his show, treated them like dirt, calling them dirt, had his feelings hurt by a superior talent. (Dean could sing, no doubt, but Lewis was a comic genius). But Dean was funny on his own w/ the 'half in the bag' routine. but out side of singing, the Stones wrote all their own legendary hits. they proved that Beehoven better roll over, like Chuck Berry said. "and tell Thcaikovsky the news."

McHale's boat was the PT-73. It certainly had nothing to do with the PT-109. The show was just that - a show. While it used the war as a "backdrop," like Stalag 13 and F Troop, it was a story line, fiction not real.

Dean Martin was, in many ways, a very lonely, tragic man. The death of his son was devastating to him. I understand he was actually a teetotaller and ate most of meals alone at local restaurants, where the staffs loved to serve him because he was so gracious. He was not at all the narcissistic, self-serving celebrity that many of his contemporaries were. . He was the least 'rat-packish' of the Rat Pack and his few true friends, like Borgnine apparently, cared deeply about him and worried about him. He was not served well by either his so-called "friends' or family or by life in general. Nice guys get treated badly in a world ruled by the selfish, self-important, and too often untalented. I've never heard a cruel or unkind word said about him. A 'tell-all' biography about him could only be sad and sympathetic and certainly not salacious.

Ernest Borgnine (Ernesto Borgnino) was a longtime Freemason. Let that sink in. No less a personage than the Catholic Pope proclaimed Freemasonry to be heretical, and even decreed the creation of a competing brotherly order - the Knights of Columbus - to keep his sons within the Catholic flock. The very creation of that order belied the universality of the KofC, and while it still exists it's never been so inclusive as the Masons have been. I had the privilege to meet Mr. Borgnine just once, in his elder years...but when he noticed the square-and-compass ring on my finger, identifying myself as a brother Mason, he insisted on treating me to a fantastic luncheon and gave me almost two hours of his time. A more down-to-earth man has never lived, in my opinion.
