A remarkable and inimitable example of virtuosity combined with expressive playing which makes this music come alive in a way which few (if any) other can match!

Thanks for the post! Ricci was/is my favourite for the pyrotechnical show pieces (Paganini, Ernst, et al.). I remember back in the early 70's seeing him play, no more than 7 or 8 feet away from me, at a very small venue on Vancouver Island where he was teaching....he just walked over and whipped off all 24 Caprices like they were nothing. Now, I know that they were his usual fair for warm up, but...WOW! And he must be 65-66 playing in the above video!! He had that critical abandonment/daring that many of the greats (exs., Heifetz, Szeryng, Szigeti, Milstein, Rabin) talked about.

Thank you! Mr. Ricci is one of the true "greats!" And that's not something defined by mass media & the record labels. He was one of a kind and his "sort of playing" is missed in today's younger generation. That "abandon" you mention is what makes him so great. Yes...he had on & off days, but he was always honest with playing & interpretations.

@@Gallipoli717 When people don't play mechanically, they will have on and off days. Apparently even Paganini could play badly. Ricci said of playing Paganini - "you must always take risks!".

There is no "best" and the performance is good, but not outstanding Ricci was an excellent violinst of his time, along with Oistrakh, Kogan, Heifetz, Menuhin, Kreisler, Ginette Nevesu, Ida Haendel Schneiderhahn to name just a few, but this performance is slightly below the usual quality of his playing. In the last rose he left off the most difficult part, especially the finale, which is a hell of a challenge,Listen here: and you will see, what is possible, technically and musically kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaPVinWkoJqMeq8

The bow change produced in the 1:12 the change from up to down is a pretty example of how to do the change with de bodie and whit the hips. In the last moment when the bow arrives the frog, he turns to his left accompanying the course, then make the change accompanying again the down bow turning to the right, also too apear make a change of balance in the feets. Beatiful, Ricci is pure magic.

You are quite right! My apologies for the mistake!. It is a Romance by an unknown composer, somewhat similar in style to the Tarrega transcription. It is interesting that the person who uploaded the video correctly labelled it as Romance de Amor, but then stated in his introduction that it was the Tarrega piece!

No, it is not Recuerdos. It is "Malagueña" a guitar piece. I think is is traditional. At least, I don't know who the composer is.
@pablocolomer25716 жыл бұрын
It is called romance, its an anonymous piece. Malagueña is another different one, i am Spanish and this works are very famous in my country :)

i've been a big fan of Ricci's since the early 70's; my teacher was a childhood friend of his in San Fran. i've seen him many times live; he always makes your hair stand on end! nevertheless, i'm disappointed in how his playing slipped, starting in mid/late 70's. like he's coasting on his talent, getting sloppy with the fundamentals, maybe not practicing much. oh well. his early recordings are amazing, especially the "paganini recital" album with Louis Persinger.

Very nice! I don't think that second piece is Tarrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra, however. But I know he did do an arrangement of it, though.

Search for this video: TARREGA-RICCI Recuerdos de la Alhambra [youtube won't let me post the link in a comment]. This is the piece I am thinking about; I don't think it's the same as your piece in this video. Am I wrong?
