This would naturally lead to Bumi developing a greater understanding/appreciation for his brother Tenzin who had to shoulder the burden of reviving the Air Nomad culture his entire life. A good use of Tenzin would've been to use him as a contrast and foil to Zaheer. Both aged mentor characters that study and love the Air Nomad culture and its teachings. Tenzin feeling more obligated towards them given who his father is and naturally being an air bender, while Zaheer views the teachings as the best course, and only acquired the abilities by chance. Teaching the new trainees, you could see Tenzin's views on the culture, and then compare them to when Zaheer explains himself to Korra. Have Tenzin confront Zaheer once or twice philosophically as well, leading to the point where Zaheer learns to fly like a Sky Bison. It could lead to Tenzin questioning his own methods, give him self doubt towards whether or not Zaheer and his radical viewpoints might have merit in regards to Air Nomad philosophy. It's a shame that a villain and Book all about Air bending barely scratches the surface on it.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the different team avatars. THE main theme of ATLA was relying on friends to succeed and how you can and should depend on others. Anyone who tried doing something solo (Zhao, Azula, Ozai, Zuko occasionally) utterly failed for it. And when anyone from any of the various teams broke apart from the group to do something alone, they usually failed. (Aang immediately got captured during the frog episode). Compare this to Whorra, that theme is almost completely absent. Characters are perfectly willing to bail on each other for selfish reasons and there’s little sense that they win because they work together as opposed to the antagonists who are doing things alone. The main antagonist of the book having his own A-team really doesn’t help this. Azula had a team too but that came back to the main team when she destroyed it and started pushing away anyone that would help her in a downward spiral of self destruction.

The biggest problem with the red lotus is that their motivation is ultimately underwritten and not particularly engaging. They want to destroy the avatar because they see it as an an unacceptable authority over humanity, and they don't care how many people they have to kill to remove it from the world. But, the overwhelming majority of avatars were anti-authoritarian, and the avatar oversoul itself seems to be as well, manifesting specifically in instances where humans try to enforce their will on the world to the detriment of it or the people living on it. I don't think we know of any in recorded history that didn't largely agree with the red lotus's ancap views, if for different reasons. The worst part is there is an obvious answer to how this could have been handled in a more interesting way. Have it turn out that the avatar periodically destroys human civilization to prevent technology and bending from advancing to the point where the balance of the earth is threatened to a degree and frequency that the avatar can no longer confidently be trusted on to solve it directly. Have "Avatar Wan" not be the first avatar, but merely AN avatar that lived shortly after a previous calamity, the cause of which would have been unspecified at the time, but later revealed to have been a deliberate act by his predecessor. The red lotus know this truth about the avatar due to Zaheer's study and meditation, and their goal is to destroy the avatar spirit in order to liberate humanity (and obviously they fail). This could have also tied into a more compelling final arc. Korra lost the past avatars in book 2. Instead of ALL of them being gone, let her keep a handful that she knew or that would resonate with her (aang, kiyoshi, wan, etc), thus powering her down but still leaving her with some past lives to serve as exposition and a source of wisdom. Korra might think the rest were destroyed, but it turns out that the bodyless avatar spirit ends up imbuing itself in a different host, and represent an existential threat to humanity. This would naturally lead to a climax where Korra fails to physically prevent the avatar spirit from carrying out its will, but convinces it with her accrued experience and logic to allow humanity the opportunity to demonstrate they can responsibly progress without ruining the world. But this kind of thing would require the writers to have actually planned shit out more than half a season in advance, and also care about Korra having to actually self actualize and grow as a person rather than just get over insecurity.
@AnimaVox_ Жыл бұрын
I think it doesn't even need to go that far. Just have a couple avatars in their history who chose to be evil-make the avatars more autonomous instead of always beholden to the spirit's will. That alone can be enough reason to not want someone to hold that sort of power because some people choose to forsake the balance-preserving religious path, and are instead corrupted by the cosmic authority bestowed upon them, misusing it for their own ends. I read a good fanfiction with the same premise once, and I'm kind of surprised more people haven't thought of that. This not only gives avatar characters more agency, but also avoids them all being obligatory 'good guy' characters or Mary Sues.

Arguably instead of going total ancap, they should just be social Darwinists. Case in point, anytime a conqueror or dictator arises, the Avatar is always there to stop them. The Red Lotus philosophy should be that the world has grown reliant if not overly complacent with the Avatar being this literal 'god in a human body' who is the most powerful bender in the world. Anytime a bender in the past has tried to challenge this notion, the Avatar beats them back into submission. The Red Lotus should believe that the Avatar is actually what's holding humanity back. Wanting humans and life take its course and letting them solve their own problems without 'god' constantly intervening in their personal matters. If that means an evil dictator has to win, so be it. The Avatar already functions as a 'police' of the world anyway. At least humanity would be free to make and learn from their own mistakes. It would actually be a very interesting thematic challenge to the idea of Balance the Avatar is suppose to represent.

You said a good point, the avatar is a messiah and like every messiah and the whole story of messiahs he needs to save people from their own ruins, in the case of avatar, slavery coming from a system that covets ,enslaves and then discards, uncle iroh , zuko, jeong jeong is the greatest proof of this, too bad that in korra this system was not broken, but transformed into a babylon 2.0

What really says a lot about Korra is that, despite having a pretty big and diverse group of acquaintances that were fans of the OG show and were eager to catch the sequel series at the time that it was airing, I only ever heard of it while Amon was part of the show. After that, the only two times I heard of it was when Nick made it took it off tv (lmao) and the swerve that Korra and Asami hooked up in the last ten seconds of the finale.

@@The1Ryu Wanting a new show that follows one specific trope the original had is not just repeating the show, that's called thematic consistency. The fact that we're following a new generation in a new time period with a radically different politics means many aspects of the original show have to be re-explored and reinterpreted for the updates in the setting. The found family dynamic is a timeless classic, and keeping it in a sequel with new characters makes sense if you want the show to have a thematic parallel with the original. If the sequel really wanted to break off from that and be different, it only succeeds by failing at keeping the trope. It's clear the writers WANT Team Avatar to still be a thing but consistently failed to see the forest for the trees and realize that they never actually wrote any proper Team Avatar into the story. The shift from traveling adventure show to something that can be rather static in setting doesn't help as you're more likely to lose track of how "together" characters are in a city setting. Whereas if all of the characters are traveling together you simply end up with more opportunity to have characters bonding together. By the time the show moves to have more exploratory adventures we're three books in and have developed zero proper team and next to nothing in terms of proper characterization for any of the main leads. And since many of the characters were span off in different directions that do not complement each other well for a cohesive team unit, and due to lack of chemistry, these characters are often left with nothing to do when put together as a full team. Either the show should have gone all-in on not having a Team Avatar and simply had the show focus more on Korra and the relationships she had with people all around Republic city and the greater world, it would have worked out better. Had Mako, Bolin, and Asami simply been reoccurring supporting characters that rotated in and out of episodes as needed it would have been better to help focus the writing between Korra and these characters in respective episodes. Instead since we're still legally married to the idea of Team Avatar we have to have them show up in episodes, but they're all separated and estranged like they left the house months ago and found new people. tl;dr learn what thematic consistency is.

Or that they have "developed zero proper team and next to nothing in terms of proper characterization for any of the main leads." Or how characters going "in different directions do not complement each other well for a cohesive team unit," or how there is a "lack of chemistry," If you are not going to show how your arguments represent something genuinely present in the show, then I'm going to dismiss them as your personal opinion. In the same way, I would dismiss a flat-earther's opinions of the shape of the world because they have just as much evidence for their opinion as you have presented here for your opinion of the show. tl;dr learn to give evidence to support your arguments.

I mean to begin with most of Korra's problems start with that it was suppose to be a short 1 season spin off that got way out of hand and the creators had to spend rest of it winging a meaningful plot that wasn't just a retread of Avatar. This is especially obvious in season 2 where it was clear that there was no set up for it and that everything in it was thrown together bs that the series never recovered from.

The more The Legend of Korra went on the worse I felt about Mako. He’s not perfect but after book one he just gets fucked over in numerous ways: Losing his relationship with Korra (probably a good thing now that I think about it), getting ditched by the people who are close to him when he needs them, gets made into a servant for an incompetent prince, getting less and less screen time, and to put the icing on the cake seeing the two girls who broke up with him get into a relationship. Like seriously, it was amazing (and not in a good way) to see them go through massive mental gymnastics to both simultaneously try to paint Korra as some kind of amazing Girl Boss yet also how we shouldn't expect her to realize what she's doing because she's 'Female' and men have to be the responsible ones. It's honestly really bizarre listening to them talk out both their mouths and their ass. But yeah, what was done to Mako was an utter travesty, and an unfortunate bit of foresight for what was to come in entertainment. Guy was literally trying to be the best BF he could be, both to Asami and then to Korra... and both of them utterly screwed him over, then proceeded to blame him and start scissoring with each other apparently in the aftermath. Then most of the fandom blamed Mako for not being the 'Adult', despite Korra having been ACTIVELY trying to sabotage his relationship with Asami... then Asami swooping in and actively stealing him back on the rebound from Korra... and then both of them having the GALL to then complain that HE was the asshole?! Early on in the show, Sokka and Aang are the most different, coming into conflict a lot. As the show goes on, they get more cohesion, and stop clashing with eachother as much. At that point, Toph is introduced to fill that niche as the Lancer. After the Runaway, Toph essentially finishes her arc, and after the invasion we finish the team off with Zuko.

The thing about Tenzin's insecurities about his teaching and stuff could have actually worked as a good piece of subversive storytelling and a really good arc for the character if this idea was put into the hands of non-hack writers... Like, hear me out, think about it like this: his family are the only survivors of a mass genocide that happened so long ago that, before Aang appeared people knew nothing about Air Nomad culture or even airbending itself. All of Aang's children are the last generation of people to ever learn the beliefs of the monks which underpin basically their entire culture from someone who actually lived by those teachings and in that culture. The best his children can do is try to carry on its legacy. With Aang gone, he has immense pressure to try and carry his culture with him and keep it alive, Aang was raised by the air nomads back when they were wide spread, but all Tenzin will have gotten is what Aang told him, so it's much harder for Tenzin to bear that burden. Add also given to the fact he's been tasked with teaching the next Avatar airbending, without ever having a chance at being able to escape Aang's shadow after all Aang managed to do, and give her as much of an experience of living as an air nomad as he can would put so much pressure and strain on to him mentally. (Assuming in this hypothetical that Korra wasn't a huge piece of shit, or at least had a parallel selfish bad student -> realising the wisdom her teachers have have, respecting them as people and as guides in her life, and then actually being able to learn from them arc.) Seeing Tenzin try to be a good mentor but not really knowing where to turn himself after the passing of Aang and not really having anyone else in the world that could help him outside of his family and the ruins of his culture he never got to see alive. Seeing him struggle with that, maybe seeing him go to each of the Temples trying to soak up some more airbender history and culture, but struggling with seeing all the remnants of the war there and the desolation of the places would be a really compelling side-plot for book one imo. Seeing him learn to overcome that self-doubt and hidden insecurity, and seeing him really grow into his own culture, and as his self-confidence of his own knowledge and wisdom increases the he more naturally can embrace mentor role and know that his student not learning isn't because he's a bad teacher. Like, that'd be so much more interesting to me. (Also, with that kinda context, I think it makes that already horrible scene where Korra says that to his face after destroying an ancient airbending training set from a genocided people that he's one of the sole survivors of in a temper tantrum even more egregious to me.) As an example of how it could turn out, it'd be kinda like seeing Iroh as he's becoming the Iroh we all love. You don't get that wise and content without a lot of introspection and a lot of soul-searching, a lot of it probably really personally difficult. Tbh, a miniseries following Iroh from after he breaks through the wall at Ba-Sing-Se to when he sets out for sail with Zuko could be a good premise for a show I think. (Though I personally prefer to be able to speculate about Iroh's past before breaking through the wall myself, if Aaron had been given that script, I'm sure it would've turned out well.)

I think the reason bending has “limitations” is its philosophical meaning plus being a martial art. A martial art has limitations just as bending does, new “moves” take work to do. Similar to how spells in Harry Potter need to be made and you can’t just point a wand and make anything happen. In the original series it’s clear that the “kind” of people benders are determines a lot. Air nomads are nonviolent. That doesn’t change it’s likely connected to why they’re even able to bend air. To use air incorrectly likely wouldn’t be possible. For example a water bender easily bends ink, why would blood be more difficult? Why would it need the moon? Because there are obviously limitations to bending, connected to the spirituality of it. Water isn’t “h2o” in atla, it’s water in the avatar universe. You’re absolutely right that there are limitations one can just assume from the other random ass spiritual limitations in atla. Like lightning requiring resolve or water bending MOST OF THE TIME needing a source of water.

I think the argument there was more that the firebenders are fighting the waterbenders on their home turf, where they should be more powerful due to the abundance of their element. However, I think this can be explained by saying the raiders were an elite group of firebenders that could realistically survive against waterbenders surrounded by their element. Intentional or not, it seems deliberately disrespectful. I also really freaking hate how poorly the legacy characters are handled in LoK. Especially Toph, who's always been one of my favorites. Grass is usually pigmented with the colour ‘green’. Grasses are monocotyledon, herbaceous plants. The grasses include the "grass", of the family Poaceae (also called Gramineae). Also sometimes it is used to include the sedges (Cyperaceae) and the rushes (Juncaceae). These three families are not closely related but belong to different clades in the order Poales. They are similar adaptations to a common life-style. The true grasses include cereals, bamboo and the grasses of lawns (turf) and grassland. Uses for graminoids include food (as grain, sprouted grain, shoots or rhizomes), drink (beer, whisky), pasture for livestock, thatching thatch, paper, fuel, clothing, insulation, construction, sports turf, basket weaving and many others. Many grasses are short, but some grasses, like bamboo can grow very tall. Plants from the grass family can grow in many places, even if they are very cold or very dry. Several other plants that look similar but are not members of the grass family are also sometimes called grass; these include rushes, reeds, papyrus, and water chestnut. Grasses are an important food for many animals, like deer, buffalo, cattle, mice, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and many other grazers. Unlike other plants, grasses grow from the bottom, so when animals eat grass they usually do not destroy the part that grows. Without grass, dirt can wash away into rivers (erosion). Graminoids include some of the most versatile plant life-forms. They became widespread toward the end of the Cretaceous. Fossilized dinosaur dung (coprolites) have been found containing grass phytoliths (silica stones inside grass leaves). Grasses have adapted to conditions in lush rain forests, dry deserts, cold mountains and even intertidal habitats, and are now the most widespread plant type. Grass is a valuable source of food and energy for many animals.Lawn grass is often planted on sports fields and in the area around a building. Sometimes chemicals and water is used to help lawns to grow. People have used grasses for a long time. People eat parts of grasses. Corn, wheat, barley, oats, rice and millet are cereals, common grains whose seeds are used for food and to make alcohol such as beer. Sugar comes from sugar cane, which is also a plant in the grass family. People have grown grasses as food for farm animals for about 4,000 years. People use bamboo to build houses, fences, furniture and other things. Grass plants can also be used as fuel, to cover roofs, and to weave baskets. n English, the word "grass" appears in several phrases. For example: "The grass is always greener on the other side" means "people are never happy with what they have and want something else." "Don't let the grass grow under your feet" means "Do something". "A snake in the grass" is about a person that will not be honest and will trick others. Grass is sometimes used as a slang term for cannabis (also called pot, weed, or marijuana) The Grass type (Japanese: くさタイプ Grass type) is one of the eighteen types. Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Grass-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack. Grass-type Pokémon are immune to Leech Seed. Grass-type Pokémon are immune to Leech Seed Starting in Generation VI, Grass-type Pokémon are immune to powder and spore moves and Effect Spore.Grass types are tied with Rock in having the most weaknesses out of all types with five. Since Generation I, a particular asset of Grass types is being the only type that is immune to Leech Seed. As of Generation VI, Grass-type Pokémon are also immune to powder and spore moves, such as Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. Additionally, Grass Pokémon are the only ones affected by Rototiller and Flower Shield. Those moves raise both attack stats or the physical Defense stat, respectively, when used. Forest's Curse adds the Grass type to the target's types. Grass-type attacks are resisted by seven types, so they're tied with Bug as the most resisted type. Those resistant types are best covered by Rock and Ground. As of Generation VI, Dark and Ghost have neutral matchups against every type that resists Grass. When Grassy Terrain is in the effect, the power of Grass-type moves is increased by 30% (50% prior to Generation VIII) if the user is on the ground. Contest properties In contests, Grass-type moves are typically Clever moves, but can also be any of the other four contest conditions. As of Generation VIII, there are 112 Grass-type Pokémon or 12.27% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Grass-type in at least one of their forms), making it the third most common type after Normal and before Flying. A Pokémon with Protean or Libero will become a Grass-type Pokémon if it uses a Grass-type move. A Pokémon with Color Change, Imposter, Mimicry, RKS System, or Multitype will become a Grass-type Pokémon if (respectively) it is hit with a Grass-type move, is sent out against a Grass-type opponent, if the terrain is grassy, if it is holding a Grass Memory, or if it is holding a Meadow Plate or Grassium Z. Since Generation VI, Grass-type Pokémon are also immune to Effect Spore; Only Grass-type Pokémon can have these Abilities. This does not include signature Abilities.Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Grass generally adopts all Bug-type Pokémon under its typing. It also adopted Poison-type Pokémon prior to the Diamond & Pearl set, after which they were moved to Psychic. Similar to the games, Grass-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Fire and resist Water. Grass-type Pokémon are strong against Fighting and Water Pokémon, whilst Metal Pokémon resisted it until the EX Power Keepers expansion set. Generation V introduced the most Grass-type Pokémon of any generation, with 21 (including Rotom's Mow form), and Generation VI introduced the fewest Grass-type Pokémon, with nine. Generation I introduced the most Grass-type moves of any generation, with 10, and Generation II introduced the fewest Grass-type moves, with three. The Grass type and/or Pokémon of the type have been referred to using the term "plant" instead on some occasions: In the English Generation I games, the Gym guide in Cerulean Gym refers to Pokémon of the Grass type as "plant Pokémon". In the English versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, he instead mentions "Grass-type Pokémon". In the Japanese versions of the Generation I games and FireRed and LeafGreen, he mentions the Grass type itself, calling it the "Plant type" (Japanese: しょくぶつタイプ). Another reference to "plant Pokémon" (Japanese: しょくぶつポケモン) is made by Professor Oak in the Japanese Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, and international Pokémon Red and Blue, classifying Bulbasaur as such when the player is about to choose it as their starter. This is also the case in the Japanese versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen; in contrast, he calls it the "grass Pokémon" in the English versions. This same reference is also used in the first episode of Pokémon Origins. In multiple languages, such as French and German, the Grass type is translated as the Plant type. The Turkish dub of the anime occasionally refers to "Grass type" as "Plant type". The Grass type has the most Pokémon that evolve by Evolution stones, with a total of 11. It is also the type that can utilize the most stones, having at least one Pokémon that can evolve via the Leaf Stone, Sun Stone, Water Stone, and Shiny Stone.The Grass type is the only type to have more than one HP-draining move, having five of them. Grass-type attacks deal doubly super-effective damage to the most Pokémon of all types. Grass-type attacks are super effective against the three types that Fire types are weak to. Fire is the only type that hasn't been paired with Grass. In Tree's a Crowd, Brock states that Grass-type Pokémon resist Electric-type moves due to being able to diffuse the electricity into trees and the ground. He also explains that if Grass types are in the air, they cannot diffuse the electricity from Electric attacks, thereby dealing normally effective damage. Now that you have read this much about grass, maybe you should go and touch some...
