Regarding the romance in Korra. It basically exemplifies what the great CS Lewis once said: "Those who cannot conceive Friendship as a substantive love but only as a disguise or elaboration of Eros betray the fact that they have never had a Friend." You could tell that the GAang in TLAB loved each other, but they were not all in love with each other. Sure, Toph had a crush on Sokka and then Aang and Katara had a running thing of romance that ultimately paid off. But that wasn't the core of their relationships. They all could see past their genitals and focus on the task at hand. Shit, even Sokka in the Serpent's Pass while it did make him focus more on his feelings for Sukki, it was born less about him wanting to get his dick wet and more about him fearing about losing someone he has deep feelings for after what happened with Yue. He suffered heartbreak and didn't want to risk it again so long as it was within his power. Korra on the otherhand treats romance like your typical teenage drama. There's nothing truly relatable about it. It's all "Oh you disagreed with me? Well then now we're enemies even though we been making out like there's no tomorrow for weeks"

What would you expect from people who live in a society (takes a shot) that champions and tries to normalize sexual adultry and degeneracy. I just love how fundamentally broken the sheer concept of friendship and interaction is in this show. So much so that when someone isn't being competitive, snarky, bossy or an asshole to someone else it's taken as a sign of romance. Every romance in the show is like that.

Adding on to the whole Vaatu/Korra thing, Vaatu states in his battle with Wan that he was the one who broke through the divide between the material and spirit world to have spirits flood in and wreak chaos, which means that Vaatu was the one who created the portals. Once Vaatu is defeated Wan seals up the portals and sends the spirits packing back to their own world, fast forward 10,000 years later and Vaatu is once again free and must be defeated. Except when Vaatu is defeated the second time by Korra he isn't trapped inside the tree like before, he is instead allowed to regenerate freely inside of Raava/Korra. Korra only then decides that it's a good idea to open Vaatu's portals back up and let spirits once again roam free on the Earth, not only that but she also later goes on to open up a portal (just like Vaatu) of her own at the climax of Book 4 at the heart of Republic City. In short Korra is the AntiChrist of the Avatar World

Nice take. The 10,000 year carpet fight thing is stupid anyway. Never seen so much retconning in a series. Also, the whole plot line of accepting violent spirits as part of our world could be seen as predictive programming for children to accept immigrants no matter the cost, or even aliens/demons.

The irony is that the line was apparently written to help put fans at ease; Mike and Bryan knew they couldn't just repeat Aang's journey for the sequel and wanted Korra to be as different from Aang as possible, and they figured fans would be initially adverse to the new Avatar being so different from Aang, so they wrote that line as a way to ease fans; essentially a, "We're doing something different this time; please bear with us". Evidently, the line had the opposite effect.

I was in high school when Korra was coming out, and seeing two girls who had fought over a guy becoming friends, was more ridiculous to me, than the element bending or spirit world. Especially if the guy wasn’t actively chasing both of them, but one just stole a kiss from him or something. So many lunchroom fights happened over sh*t like that, and this show expected me to believe that women could become friends after that. I mean, maybe if the guy was cheating on both of them, and neither knew, I could buy the idea that they could become friends afterwards. But in the case of this show, both women knew, and the guy wasn’t the one trying to start the cheating. So the idea that hair wasn’t ripped out, at the very least, is insane to me.

Or imagine that, being the only two airbenders, both Korra and Tenzin had different ideas about what the revived airbending culture should look like for their descendants: Korra has Aang’s memories, which are limited because they are from a child’s POV, while Tenzin grew up on stories of the 100 year war and formed his own opinions about the air nomads based on studies of the remains of the temples. You could have Korra pursue an attempt to recreate the emotional experience of living among the nomads and their spiritual harmony with nature, while Tenzin tries to maintain historical accuracy and emphasizes the ascetic aspects of life.

According to Beginnings, bending was never an integral nor spiritually linked ability. It was merely gifted as a temporary defense tool by the lion turtles. So why would harmonic convergence “sense an imbalance” and give random people bending? The Legend of Whorra doesn’t even know how to stick to its own lore, let alone ATLA’s
@insulttothehumanrace3807
@insulttothehumanrace3807 2 жыл бұрын
A little off-topic, but the Beginnings episodes kind of ruined the Avatar in a similar manner. It being changed from a spirit of the world/incarnation of nature to a human fusing with a spirit messes up some things. Like, why does the Avatar being killed in the Avatar State risk erasing all their lives and knowledge, if that all comes from a spirit who returns after a while anyway? Why does the Avatar need to learn the different philosophies and styles of bending, when Raava is why they have that ability in the first place (especially since Wan, as far as I recall, only really learned the "natural" way with fire)? And on a note related to your comment, why is the Avatar still around after the next Harmonic Convergence? The Avatar has been turned from a spirit/incarnation of nature into a human/spirit fusion -- an abomination of nature. So shouldn't that be corrected, if the idea is to restore balance? Especially since the fusion only happened as an act of desperation from Wan to stop Vaatu, not the result of the natural cycle of life?

An interesting thing about the randos magically granted airbending and now pretending to be a part of a effectively dead culture is that’s it’s basically a more egregious version of a screw up from the original avatar series. Book 1’s The Northern Air Temple had rando earth kingdom people butcher an air nomad temple; turning it into an ugly smog belching and weapons manufacturing pit. Rooms and artifacts are carelessly destroyed and the real kicker is Aang is the one chastised by the plot for not understanding the squatters destroying his mass murdered peoples home and making cheap parodies of his culture. I guess the writers just never really understood just what the air nomad genocide would really mean or how sensitive of a topic that should be. Regularly treating people with no connection to them as successors to the air nomads is the closest they ever got.

Wan’s story showed Korra how utterly urgent it was to keep those hateful, deadly spirits away from helpless humans. The spirits in Wan's, Korra's, heck even Aang's to a degree, all think humans should help and respect them, with none of them (aside from Twi and La) willing to reach out to or help humans in return.

I went back to do a double check on what happened in the last book where we met the first Avatar, and already Book 3 not only fuck up the pre-established lore from The Last Air Bender and Book 2 at the same time. Book 2: The original benders were blessed with the power to bend the elements by the Lion Turtles. Also Book 2: YOU CAN'T BE ABLE TO BEND MULTIPLE ELEMENTS UNLESS YOU HAD THAT ONE SPIRIT FUSE WITH YOU TO DO IT. This confirms one thing to me, no one on the writing team for Legend of Korra knows anything about the lore from The Last Air Bender, or even their own new lore from the sequel series. It sounds to me like the writers for this are different from the writers for TLAS. They are either people who actively hate the current lore, and are looking for an excuse to "update it" in order to get over major "creative differences" (maybe a feud with the writers of TLAS), or they are the type who literally doesn't care about established lore and just makes up a new set of special rules for every new plot arc they make. It's like they're kids who had a few imaginary friends and wrote about them having different kinds of characteristics on a per-story basis. In one story, they're on a pirate ship. In the next story, a space ship. The stories are not connected except for using the same character names and personality traits. It's a kid having fun with writing random stories with the same personality cores over and over, not a writer producing a good work of fiction.

Dude your elaboration on bringing Air Benders back with a snap of the writer's fingers was epic. I'd never really thought of that before, but when you take the idea seriously and think it through, it's horrifying. Bryke are basically insulting their own creation here, by doing this. It's almost like...storytelling genocide or something. They had the Air nomads genocided by the Fire Nation right? Then, in Korra, they decide not to honor the weight of that terrible, heinous act and its victims. Instead, they press a button and make it all better, with people who aren't even the descendants of the ACTUAL Air nomads. That'd be like if the Americans had FULLY destroyed the native population, except for one survivor, right? Then, after he has children, and they have children, God steps in and suddenly calls a random sample of white people "natives". Then, God names you, the descendent of the Last Native, to try and teach these white people your ways. Obviously it's a little different because we're talking about superpowers vs. an ethnicity, but I think it illustrates my point: the destruction of the Air nomads should be respected, even by its writers. To fix it all with a switch just doesn't fly. Because we fans respect the genocide of the Air nomads. We understood how terrible a thing it was and how it would have impact for generations in this world. Even if we didn't think about it much, I think most of us would expect to see the consequences of that genocide and how Aang's progeny were doing with rebuilding the Air nomads. Instead we got this...constant humiliation of the last hope for the Air nomads (Tenzin) and an attempt to simply deflect from the historical significance of a terrible in-universe event the writers refuse to honor properly. Also 11:28 always fucking kills me. XD
@aleciad7218
@aleciad7218 10 ай бұрын
Now that I think about it, LoK rugsweeping the Air Nomad genocide gets even worse. The show could've brought back some airbenders through energybending or specific spirit intervention (like the airbending equivalents of Tui and La), but then a new airbending culture would be established. You could get a very interesting conflict with Tenzin trying to reestablish the old Air Nomad culture versus the new airbenders, who are developing their own unique ways of life. Syncretisim should happen, because the "uniting of the four nations" is supposed to be a theme in LoK. Ultimately, this would emphasize the theme that things change, but other things cannot be undone. The genocide would be treated with the gravity it deserves. To hammer this home, Tenzin could state that some aspects of the Air Nomad culture are lost forever. It would've been great for Korra talk to her past Air Nomad avatars, so she could help record their lost histories and wisdom.

That's exactly how I felt about Airbending. The writers have deteriorated to the absolute laziest way to write supernatural abilities: Xmen. People randomly spontaneously obtain superpowers that they can easily control/fluctuate with their emotions and they get better at controlling them by just squinting their eyes and TRYING HARDER, or from some bullshit surge of emotion. There was literally a scene in S3 episode 1 of Korra that was straight out of an Xmen comic where Korra invites this kid who randomly and dangerously started airbending to her school of gifted youngsters to "train." Just totally throw all the beautiful work the first series crafted in the fucking compacter to burn. All the intricate rules and mastery and culture. Unbelievable. Disney did the same thing with the Force and everything else they touch. Unbelievable.

It was bad enough already with the signs on the wall in Book 1, honestly. Part of what made Last Airbender great was that it kept the typically Eastern idea that certain powers are linked to a certain level of spiritual growth. You can't access certain powers if you're not enlightened enough, from a simple practical perspective: there's a logic behind the spiritual energy. In Korra, though, it all became mundane, and common. Benders were indistinguishable from mutants, just less variety. And the biggest kick in the teeth that showed it off was right in Book 1: Mako's lightning bending. Not only does he now have a power thought legendary and rare a hundred years ago, he uses that power to get work in a power plant. Yes, it makes sense that education progresses, so more people have access to knowledge. But the whole point of it was that even if you knew how, you couldn't do it unless you had some spiritual power, unless you had gone through some sort of awakening. Metalbending was an innovation on existing techniques, something that can be argued to be purely knowledge-based. Lightning bending wasn't: Zuko didn't master that skill, for example, he only got the redirection.

She's originally written as a spy/double agent or whatever and a member of the Equalists and her being a non-bender + her mother's death backstory kinda confirm this original characterization but they changed their minds and made her character "heroic" instead. He leaves out the resolution for every plot point and only presents Korra's worst behavior to make her look bad. It's disingenuous at best and slimy at worst. If we did the same for Aang, he's an unapologetic thief that lashes out at his friends, disrespects his elders, disobeys his masters, destroys property, lies, runs away to pout, and inadvertently caused the genocide of his people and unleashed 100 years of war on the world. The worst thing about Harmonic Convergence is how it creates a scenario in which there are no longer permanent consequences for the airbender genocide. It utterly stifles any sort of gravitas. This is as bad to me as the mistake carpets. If the writers had been more creative and less dependent on plot contrivance, they should've included non-bending descendants of the nomads-results of inter-mixing with other cultures. Then, they could've crafted a story in which these descendants could be re-patriotized and integrated into nomad culture, and slowly but surely start bringing airbending back by intermingling with Aang's descendants.

Ya know, I never thought of it until just now, but since book 4's entire plot revolves around weaponizing spirit vines into basically a-bombs, everyone who's killed or hurt by those weapons in the next season is also on Korra's empty head. Aside from spreading air-bending, I can't think of a single upside to that decision--and I think even Aang would have been like "yeah, airbending ain't worth this" if he'd been asked.
@matthewmuir8884
@matthewmuir8884 2 жыл бұрын
That one can't entirely be blamed on Korra, as the inventor of the weapon took inspiration from Vaatu's energy beams and, when the villains weaponizing spirit vines lose access to their supply of vines harvested from Republic City, they instead harvest spirit vines from the swamp (I can't remember its name; the swamp that was in that episode of season 2 of ATLA), which prove even more potent than the vines from Republic City. So, the weapon was likely going to be made even if Korra shut the portals.

It saddens me that we didn't have an overall character arc where Korra starts as one of the worst avatars (which other characters would call her out for) and over the course of the four books she would learn all of the traits that would make her a great avatar with the book titles reflecting the trait she would learn. For example, the traits would be integrity, empathy, influence, and wisdom. Also, during the fourth book, the last conflict won't be fighting a giant robot; but with Korra needing to use all the lessons she learned over her journey to negotiate a peace treaty between two large factions that hate each other before more factions get pulled into this conflict. The last conflict of the series would be her trying to maintain the peace that Aang worked so hard to start. Personally, I think this would be an interesting series to watch with a lot of life lessons to learn.

With the introduction of Zaheer and Ghazan, I felt that Aang and Azula and Toph are just utter garbage, because Zaheer became nasty for no reason in a 5x5 cell in a few days/weeks when Aang mastered air bending by training for years.. because he was 'studying' the air nomads and reading this Guru book... and Ghazan is a master of a skill only avatars could do, because they are the only ones who could earth bend and fire bend, and lava bending is not realy a subskill, but a combination of both... only for it to be a BS bending to make the villains more threatening and badass... and later, even fucking Bolin could lava bend... very sad Didn't even finish it.

Honestly, when they started to introduce all of these "Surprise! Airbenders!" into the storyline, I could only see this as railroading people into a religious order with pretty strict rules (living simply, no meat, shave your head, wear only the allowed religious garb, etc). They were Earth kingdom people, with that history, clothes, and traditions, who suddenly have a problem that they can't solve alone. They are in a very vulnerable state and desperate for guidance. Like that one example of a guy whose air bending abilities are outside of his control and he's at his wits' end. So the only help these people can get is from Tenzin and co. and become an Air Nomad. The alternative is being captured and held by the Earth Kingdom's monarch to do as she pleased. So you are forced to join the Air Kingdom and expected to completely adopt a culture that isn't yours and live and breathe it every day. I always kind of felt sorry for a lot of the background forced-Airbenders because they only get a choice between prisoner, weapon, or pretending to give a rat's behind about a culture forced on you by the universe playing magical-power raffle. Sure, Tenzin isn't trying to abuse them or be malicious like some cult leader, but he's still taking advantage of the situation to advance his own goals of restoring the Air Nomad culture. Perhaps he doesn't actually expect them to stay and continue to carry on his culture, much like someone coming to learn Shaolin martial arts and living the life of a monk for a time before leaving the school or something to resume their normal modern life elsewhere, but that wasn't how it felt in the show. It honestly seemed like he regarded them as the next generation that will carry on his wishes and they are now Airbenders, expected to live and die as Air Nomads did 100+ years ago. I might have some details mixed up, since I haven't watched this Shit-show of Korra since it aired, but it's basically the impression I walked away with. I wouldn't have wanted to wake up with powers and then been forced to adopt a culture and way of life I didn't want.

I jokingly called KorrAsami the first time mako started having trouble with Asami, was like, " oh the girls should just date eachother lol." Then my joking attitude turned dour when I realized with all the feminism and what not - that it probably will happen even though Korra and Asami are both tops, One's a butch tomboy and the others a femme fatale belladonna... they have no chemistry almost nobody believes me to this day because even most fans of the ship realize THERE WERE NO SPARKS...

Thank you for EVERYTHING on this series. Other than retconning and destroying all the world-building and lore for the ATLA universe, I was extra pissed off about the creators gaslighting us into thinking we as the audience were too stupid to pick up any semblance of a romantic relationship between Korra and Asami. I was right all along, especially with you replaying it: it was derived from thin air, just like the sudden air-bending powers.

I watched Korra right after it ended back in 2015 and went into it KNOWING that Asami and Korra ended up together. And when there were like 5 minutes left in the series finale all I could think was "wait, was the lesbian couple stuff a lie?". Then they held hands and credits rolled. THAT WAS IT? THERE IS ZERO INDICATION THERE'S ANY ROMANCE BETWEEN THEM BEFORE THE LAST 30 SECONDS OF THE ENTIRE SERIES.

The Airbender lottery could actually be fixed with - each of the new airbenders could have had an air nomad ancestor - the air nomads lived kind of in the middle of earth nation territory, some intermingling could have happened, maybe some nonbinding nomads left the tribe or had some bastards or something, a mention of that could have made it feel less like deus ex machina.
